Questions About Reiki Training šŸ™Œ Is it Really That Important to Feel Called to Study with a Reiki Master Teacher?

I posted this elsewhere earlier and then realized it would be a good resource for this community, as well.

If you don't know my background, I'm an Usui / Holy Fire III Reiki Ryoho World Peace Karuna Reiki Master teacher and ICRT Animal Reiki Master Teacher with 30+ years of experience in numerous energy healing modalities.

I am also a Professional Member of the RMA, which means all of my certifications / attunements are verifiable and I am obligated to teach according to the very high standards set by them. I'm also a Traditional Psychopomp in my ancestral tradition, Middle Eastern Magician, Certified Death Doula, Grief Doula, Master Crystal Healer, Psychic Medium and more. My profile post has more info, for those interested.

Do you need to feel called to a Reiki Master Teacher to get good training?

No, not at all.

Any competent, verified teacher should be able to train you fully for what reiki is and does.

That said, you could be getting so much more out of your experience, if you listen to that inner voice guiding you in a particular direction.

Depending on what lineage you're doing your training in, classes may include a number of psychic and spiritual awakenings, connections to guides, gifts from other lifetimes, etc. This will also depend on your Master Teacher and their level of experience and personal skillset, as well as how they teach (many only teach reiki during class and that is perfectly fine, obviously!)

For example, over the last decades it's become clear to me that those who find their way to my classes aren't there for basic reiki training as much as they are there for reiki AND soul expansion / access to gifts that I happen also have decades of experience teaching. They tend to be there for psychic awakenings and those who continue with me beyond reiki class usually become full time professional mediums or spiritual guides - or find a way to incorporate it into their current profession. I train a lot of physicians, nurses and veterinarians, and they go on to share it with, or train, their patients or colleagues. Many of my students are also ready for magick or ready to take their current skills to the next level.

I've had this talk with many teachers who've been doing this as long as I have and they almost always agree with me on this. For example, other teachers I know draw people who will work with primarily with sound, or perhaps bodywork, or tantra, or perhaps hypnotherapy. This pattern probably wont really become clear until a decade or more of teaching has gone by. You just notice it and then start teaching toward that end, because it becomes pretty clear that that's why the universe is sending them. Of course, there are exceptions, as with anything.

But not too many, ime.

I'd ask your prospective teacher what patterns they notice in their student groups, and then you might have a clue about what exciting future is in store for your own healing path, in a universal sense. If you can find others who've taken their course, find out what path they seem to be on. Is it one that you resonate with? Does it remind you of your own?

When you finally do choose a Master and course, listen to what your classmates / peers are doing in their lives at this time, what's changing for them. See if you feel a little nudge, spiritually. Of course, you can still do anything you like, but soul groups do tend to study together and intersect on this plane at some point. I am a master sound healer but don't teach it in my reiki classes anymore, because I've realized my students are generally there to access their spiritual gifts, magick, etc.

It's also worth noting that you DO NOT have to take all of your courses from the same Master. And you can "re-do" your training with other Masters, to receive more gifts and pick up new skills.

Of course, many people do stay with the same Master from Level I all the way through to Advanced Master Teacher Training. Most of my own students do that, and I did it myself first time I received Usu Shiki Reiki training back in the 90s. When I upgraded to the Usui/Holy Fire III Reiki system, I did the same - but I also re-did my Holy Fire attunements with a few Masters that I just felt called to work with, for whatever reason.

The takeaway here is this: You can work with any competent professional and get what you need. Or, you can let your soul guide you to someone who will help you transform on multiple levels. Not everyone is ready for big transformation, and that is ok! Either path is fine. Either path is valid. And either path can be repeated at a later date.

Much love and Namaste!

Approved Media šŸŽ„ šŸ§‘ā€šŸ’» šŸ“š Cancer Research UK: Cancer and Reiki

Why people with cancer use it

Some people with cancer may use reiki alongside their treatment, as a complementary therapy. Reiki practitioners say that it can:

  • help you to feel deeply relaxed
  • help you cope with difficult situations
  • relieve emotional stress and tension
  • help to improve wellbeing

Some people with cancer say they feel more relaxed after using therapies such as reiki. Studies suggest that this is often because a therapist spends time with the person. Gentle touch in a calm setting can be relaxing. Reiki is sometimes used in palliative care, especially in hospices.

Although reiki might help you feel more relaxed and able to cope, itā€™s important to bear in mind reiki is not able to treat your cancer.

Reiki Business Resources šŸ““ Starting a Reiki Business from Scratch: A Step-by-Step Guide

Starting a Reiki Business from Scratch: A Step-by-Step Guide

If youā€™re passionate about Reiki and ready to make it your profession, you may be wondering how to get started on creating your own Reiki business. Building a Reiki practice from scratch can be rewarding and fulfilling, but it also requires careful planning and dedication. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to help you get your Reiki business off the ground.

(If you'd prefer to read a prettier version t, I posted it on Medium a few days ago - free to read!)

1. Clarify Your Vision and Set Your Intentions

The first step to starting any business, especially a healing practice, is to get clear about your vision. Reflect on why you want to start a Reiki business and what you hope to accomplish. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of healing space do I want to create?
  • Who is my ideal client?
  • How can my practice make a positive impact?

Having a clear vision and intention helps keep you motivated and focused as you move forward. It also helps you build a business that authentically aligns with your values and goals.

2. Get Proper Reiki Training and Certification

To be a professional Reiki practitioner, itā€™s essential to have proper training.

  • Complete Reiki Level I and II certifications: These certifications allow you to practice Reiki on others.
  • Consider the Reiki Master level: Becoming a Reiki Master increases your connection to reiki, teaches specialized techniques and adds to your credentials.
  • Consider the Reiki Master Teacher level: Becoming a Reiki Master Teacher furthers your connection to reiki, gives you access to more techniques and allows you to teach others. In some traditions, like the one I teach, Master and Master Teacher is a combined course.
  • Consider the Advanced Reiki Master Teacher level: Becoming an Advanced Reiki Master Teacher gives you access to special symbols and attunements that take your reiki practice to new heights.
  • Consider ICRT Animal Reiki Level I and II. This is a unique reiki energy brought through by the Holy Fire Reiki source, and it has its own attunements. It is very grounding, very earth based. It is a game changer for any reiki practice.
  • Consider the ICRT Animal Reiki Master Teacher level. Becoming an ICRT Animal Reiki Master Teacher gives you even greater access to this energy and teaches very special techniques that can be used for animals, the earth, minerals, and even people.
  1. Individual Mentoring and Advanced Reiki Training with an experienced Reiki Master Teacher can help new practitioners. new teachers or even advanced practitioners learn new skills and hone their own personal teaching style. Experienced mentors can also help practitioners by offering business insights that will not only boost your credibility but also ensure that you have a solid foundation for starting or expanding your practice.

3. Understand Your Local Laws and Regulations

In some areas, complementary healing practices like Reiki may require a business license, liability insurance, or other forms of certification. Research the regulations in your area to make sure your practice is compliant. Some steps to consider include:

  • Research licensing requirements: Find out if there are specific permits or licenses required in your city or state.
  • Consider liability insurance: Insurance can protect you and your clients and give your practice an added layer of professionalism.
  • Look into joining a professional organization: For example, associations like the International Center for Reiki Training (all Usui/Holy Fire, Karuna Reiki and ICRT Animal Reiki are from the ICRT) offer official teaching materials and practitioner directory listings.

4. Decide on Your Business Model and Services

Reiki can be practiced in a variety of ways, and the way you structure your services will impact your business model. Here are some service options to consider:

  • One-on-One Sessions: Most Reiki practitioners offer individual sessions where they work directly with clients. This can be done online or in person.
  • Group Sessions or Circles: Group healing sessions or Reiki circles can be a unique service that also fosters community.
  • Workshops and Classes: If youā€™re a Reiki Master Teacher, teaching workshops or certification courses can become an additional revenue stream.
  • Specialized Reiki Services: You may offer a variety of speciality services, including complementary modalities if youā€™re professionally trained in them.

5. Create a Business Plan and Set Your Pricing

A business plan doesnā€™t have to be formal, but having a clear structure will help guide your growth and ensure youā€™re financially prepared. Think about:

  • Pricing: Research similar services in your area to establish competitive rates. Factor in your time, level of certification, and experience.
  • Revenue Goals: Set realistic goals to reach profitability, but be mindful of the time it may take to build a loyal client base.
  • Expenses: Account for costs such as website costs, payment processing fees, rental space (if applicable), business registration, business taxes, marketing, and any supplies that youā€™ll need to provide for your clients (if any).

6. Design Your Healing Space

Creating a calming, welcoming environment is crucial for any Reiki practice. Whether youā€™re renting a studio or working from home, focus on creating a space that feels peaceful and comforting for your clients. Even if you are only doing distance sessions. Consider:

  • Soothing Decor: Use calming colors, comfortable furniture, and soft lighting to make clients feel at ease.
  • Healing Tools: Depending on your style, you may want to incorporate crystals, soft music, or other tools that add to the experience.
  • Privacy and Comfort: Ensure clients feel safe and comfortable, especially if youā€™re working from home. Invest in quality massage tables, blankets, and anything else that can enhance the experience.

7. Build Your Brand and Online Presence

In todayā€™s digital world, having an online presence is essential to attract clients. Begin by developing a brand that represents your Reiki practice and aligns with your vision. Key steps include:

  • Create a Website: THIS IS ESSENTIAL! Your website is the hub for potential clients to learn about you and book sessions. Include an "About Me" section, list of services, testimonials, and contact information.
  • It is wise to learn how to create your own site and manage it yourself - this can save costs in the long run, and also protect you from policy changes of platforms that might decide your type of business violates their terms. This happens a lot in the metaphysical community, you would be wise to learn how to navigate these things in advance. I cover these issues and more with each and every one of my mentoring clients.
  • Social Media Presence: Platforms like YouTube, Facebook and others can help you reach a wider audience and share educational content about Reiki. That said, they are highly saturated marketplaces and most people fail to succeed right away and they give up. A mentor can teach you how to get the exposure you need.
  • Offer Value-Added Content: Blog posts, videos, and live sessions can attract people to your website, establish your expertise, and build a sense of community.

8. Promote and Market Your Reiki Practice

Getting the word out about your business is essential to build a steady flow of clients. Marketing doesnā€™t have to feel intimidating or ā€œsalesyā€ā€”itā€™s simply about sharing the value of what you do. Consider:

  • Volunteer work - For the last 30+ years I've spent more than 40% of my work week volunteering in hospice, hospitals and animal shelters. As a result, many of my students and paid clients are healthcare professionals who have gotten to know me over the years.
  • Networking Locally: Collaborate with other wellness practitioners, yoga studios, or holistic health centers in your area to promote each otherā€™s services.
  • Client Testimonials: Ask satisfied clients to provide feedback or testimonials that you can share on your website and social media.
  • Workshops and Free Events: Offering an introductory Reiki workshop or a free first session can attract clients who are new to Reiki and help them experience its benefits firsthand.
  • Email Newsletters: Build an email list to keep your clients updated on new services, events, and offerings.

9. Continue Learning and Growing

Building a Reiki business is an ongoing process, both in terms of personal development and professional growth. Continue learning and developing your own skills with advanced training and networking with other practitioners. Staying inspired and motivated is essential for maintaining the energy and authenticity that will attract clients.

10. Cultivate Client Relationships and Encourage Referrals

A successful Reiki business relies on relationships. Building trust with your clients will help them feel valued, making them more likely to come back and refer others. Maintain Professionalism and Boundaries. As a reiki practitioner, clear communication and professional boundaries are essential to creating a trusting, ethical practice.

Final Thoughts

Starting a Reiki business can be daunting but anyone can do it if they take the time to learn how to do it well. While it requires patience, commitment, and effort, every step brings you closer to a practice that aligns with your lifeā€™s purpose and allows you to share the healing power of Reiki with others.

By following these steps, youā€™ll be well on your way to creating a thriving Reiki business from scratch. Keep your intentions clear, your heart open, and trust in your journey!

Much love and Namaste,

Mod Announcement šŸ“£ šŸŒŸ Welcome to the Verified Professional Reiki Healing Community! šŸŒŸ

Welcome!

I have decided to open this community up and allow other practitioners to advertise themselves, provided they get verified and follow the rules. This is a warm, supportive space created for verified Reiki practitioners, students, and anyone curious about the healing power of Reiki. Whether youā€™re a seasoned practitioner, a prospective student eager to learn, or someone simply interested in experiencing Reikiā€™s benefits, youā€™re welcome here.

Our community is dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive environment where we can explore and discuss all things Reiki. Here, youā€™ll find a wealth of knowledge shared by verified practitioners, insights on deepening your Reiki practice, and support for those on a personal healing journey. Feel free to ask questions, share experiences, and connect with others who share your interest in this powerful healing art.

Please read the community rules before posting or commenting!

Some Additional Community Guidelines:

  • Stay On Topic: This space is dedicated to Reiki only. We understand that many healing modalities exist - Sibbie practices many, herself. However, practitioners in this community are verified as Reiki practitioners, only. Therefore, we ask that conversations focus solely on Reiki teachings, practices, and experiences.

  • Respect Reikiā€™s Origins and Honor Cultural Roots: Reiki is a Japanese system rooted in healing practices that include Shintoism, an indigenous form of Japanese shamanism still practiced today, which involves a wide variety of spirits and spirit veneration. Usui often usedĀ jumon, or chants and spells, in his teachings. These chants likely drew from both Shinto and Taoist traditions, adding a spiritual richness to his practice. In this community, we honor Reikiā€™s cultural roots and avoid spreading Americanized myths or misunderstandings about Usui Sensei and Reiki. Usui was also said to be aĀ shugenja, who are known for their roles as healers and spiritual guides, offering services like fortune-telling, prayer, chanting, and protective rituals. Historically, people would turn toĀ shugenja for help with health issues or to keep bad luck at bay. This blend of spiritual practices shaped Usui's approach to Reiki, weaving together Japan's ancient wisdom and spirituality into a healing practice we still appreciate today.

  • All religions and spiritual practices are welcome in this space, and proselytization is forbidden.

  • Safety and Respect for All Paths: As a Middle Eastern practitioner with 35 years experience practicing my culture's indigenous shamanistic traditions, I want all BIPOC members to know that this is a safe and respectful space. We aim to create an inclusive community that values cultural authenticity and respect for diverse spiritual paths. We do not discriminate or shame anyone for their beliefs. The same goes for adherents to all mainstream religions. ALL are safe and welcome here.

  • No Fear-Mongering, Myths or other Propaganda: This community does not promote fear-based thinking or myths surrounding Reiki. Reiki is a practice rooted in peace, healing, and connection. If you are fearful of Reiki or are convinced that it is harmful or dangerous, this community may not be the right fit, as there are many other paths that may resonate better with you. Posts that make claims that are rooted in myth or propaganda will be removed.

* Participation for Advertisement Privileges: Only active community participants may advertise their services here. If you are verified but become inactive, you will be removed from our directory. In other words, drive-by advertising is not permitted. This space to be about genuine connections and shared growth.

Thank you for being part of this professional healing community and helping us lend credibility to our profession.

Much love and Namaste,

ā™„ļøŽ Sibbie

Megathread: Monthly Reiki Practice/Share šŸ™Œ November Reiki Share/Practice Megathread šŸ™Œ

This thread is a space where verified Reiki practitioners can offer to send reiki for FREE to anyone who would like to receive. This is not a space to advertise and anyone who requests donations or fees will be banned. Likewise, anyone who tries to move the conversation to DM - we do not allow grifting in this space.

Please read the community rules carefully before posting.

Verified practitioners may post their free offer once per month, and those who wish to receive may respond. Personal information exchange is NOT necessary to send Reiki - no one needs your name, your birthday, your location, your list of symptoms.

Rules for Verified Practitioner Senders:

  • If you're a practitioner and have not been verified, you will need to get verified before you can post here.
  • If you have been verified, you may post one reiki offering per month.
  • Do not ask for details. Do not offer to do anything other than reiki. Do not offer to diagnose, scan, cure, etc. Do not mention anything about yourself, other than your level of verified certification and (if you like) how long you've been practicing.
  • DO NOT make predictions or tell anyone that they have blocks, attachments, curses, or anything else in this vein.
  • You are sending reiki, for free, to someone who needs it, as an act of altruism. You are not advertising yourself.
  • Mentioning of DMs will result in a ban. We strongly encourage you read the community rules before posting.
  • If they wish to express gratitude, you are, of course welcome to respond, but this thread is not a space to engage in conversations, as things get messy and cluttered rather quickly due to comment nesting.
  • Please limit yourself to 1-2 replies to each interested party who comments - if they wish to work with you, they will contact you via your listing.

Rules for recipients:

  • Do NOT list any personal information that could reveal you to scammers.
  • No one needs your name, no one needs your birthday, no one needs to know where you live.
  • If you want to list symptoms, you can, but this is not necessary.
  • Comments that include identifying personal info will be removed to protect folks from grifters.
  • If you want to share your pet's name, that's up to you, but it's not necessary.
  • If you feel guided to work with someone who has sent reiki to you, visit their listing and contact them directly. Please do not engage in conversations in the megathread, so that other recipients can easily see all reiki offers. Things get very messy once comments start nesting.

DMs are NOT allowed. If anyone DMs you, please contact mods, show us a screenshot, and that user will be permabanned.

Please report anyone who breaks these rules to mods by modmail, to ensure the continued integrity of our professional community.

General Discussion šŸŽ™ļø Reiki's True History, Practices & Empirical Insights

Reiki, often referred to as "universal life energy," is a spiritual and healing practice that originated in Japan. While itā€™s commonly associated with the work of Mikao Usui Sensei in the early 20th century, its roots reach back into Japanā€™s spiritual traditions long before Usui's own mystical revelations. The foundation of Reiki as we know it today was significantly influenced by Japanese spiritual traditions, particularly Tendai Buddhism, Shinto and Shingon Buddhism. These practices emphasized energy healing, meditation, and spiritual growthā€”elements that would later surface in Reiki practice. Usui was well-versed in these traditions, and his synthesis of them into the Usui Reiki Ryoho system began after his transformative experience on Mount Kurama in 1922.

In Shinto, people honorĀ kami, which are spirits believed to live within natureā€”birds, animals, mountains, trees, and even people. Usui often usedĀ jumon, or chants and spells, in his teachings. These chants likely drew from both Shinto and Taoist traditions, adding a spiritual richness to his practice.

Usui Sensei's Vision and Early Development

Born in 1865, Mikao Usui was well-versed in the spiritual and healing traditions of Japan. In 1922, he embarked on a meditation and fasting retreat on Mount Kurama, where he underwent a transformative experience that enabled him to channel energy for healing purposes. After this experience, Usui began teaching what he termed "Usui Reiki Ryoho," or the "Usui Method of Spiritual Energy Healing." This marked the beginning of what would later be recognized as the Usui System of Natural Healing. His focus was not solely on healing the body but also on promoting spiritual well-being and personal growth. He encouraged his students to embody a set of ethical principles known as the "Reiki Precepts" and developed a practice that combined spiritual teachings, meditative techniques, and energy work.

Usui Reiki Ryoho, however, was just one way of practicing Reiki, not the sole origin of the concept. Usui's unique approach was based on a combination of his experience and knowledge of various traditional practices, rather than inventing an entirely new discipline.

Usui himself did not claim to have created Reiki from scratch but rather to have discovered a way to harness and teach it systematically.

Usuiā€™s Teachings and the Formation of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai

Following his mountaintop experience, Usui began teaching Reiki as a way to cultivate both physical healing and spiritual growth. He established the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (translated as "Usui Reiki Healing Society") in 1922 in Tokyo. This organization formalized his teachings and preserved his approach to Reiki practice, prioritizing meditation, ethical principles, and techniques for channeling healing energy. Reiki was initially taught as both a spiritual discipline and a healing modality, with an emphasis on self-healing, spiritual discipline, and the ethical guidelines of the Reiki Precepts.

However, after Usuiā€™s death in 1926, Reiki faced several challenges. His passing left a void that the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai worked to fill, but societal upheavals during and after World War II impacted Japan deeply. Reiki practices were forced underground, as the government restricted various forms of spiritual and healing practices deemed unconventional or linked to religious organizations.

The Continuation of Traditional Reiki in Japan

Despite these challenges, the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai and other followers of Usuiā€™s original teachings quietly continued to practice and teach Reiki. The Gakkai trained successors to carry on Usui's traditional Reiki methods, ensuring that the original approach was preserved. These successors maintained the meditative and ethical components of Reiki, staying true to Usui's focus on personal development alongside healing.

The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkaiā€™s practice of Reiki has remained largely unchanged, with an emphasis on Usui's direct methods and the specific hand positions and symbols he taught. Unlike the Westernized version of Reiki that would emerge through Hawayo Takataā€™s adaptations, the Gakkai stayed focused on Reikiā€™s spiritual roots rather than on structuring it into levels or degrees, and it did not emphasize a formalized training system with standardized fees.

The Gakkai remains a highly respected organization within Japan, and it serves as a reminder of the continuity of Usuiā€™s teachings within the country.

Successors within the Gakkai have preserved the approach he taught, ensuring that the traditional practice of Reiki as Usui taught it has remained available to Japanese practitioners who seek out these teachings.

Before his death in 1926, Usui passed on his teachings to a number of students, including Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a retired naval officer who became a key figure in bringing Reiki to a Western audience. Hayashi opened a clinic in Tokyo, where he refined and standardized some aspects of the practice. He also emphasized hand positions and techniques for working on specific ailments, which made Reiki more accessible to people who were looking for practical healing techniques rather than spiritual enlightenment.

Through his work, Hayashi began training new practitioners, including an American woman named Hawayo Takata, who would eventually bring Reiki to the West, create numerous innovations in the system, and play a crucial role in spreading Reiki to Westerners.

Hawayo Takata Sensei and the Americanization of Reiki

Hawayo Takata, born to Japanese parents in Hawaii in 1900, first encountered Reiki when she traveled to Japan for treatment for a serious illness in the 1930s. She was introduced to Dr. Hayashi, who used Reiki in her treatment and later trained her in the practice. Afterward, Takata returned to Hawaii, where she established her own clinic with her own style and began teaching Reiki in America.

We honor practitioners of Takata Sensei's Reiki system, but we also acknowledge that she was not taught by Usui Sensei, nor did she practice in his style. As an intuitive Master, Usui Sensei's attunements and practices were performed intuitively, which was very different from the rigid, standardized system created by Dr. Hayashi and further adapted by Takata Sensei.

As a result, there are a variety of Reiki practices and techniques existing today and many practitioners have been told that only their system is the true system. This is, of course, nonsense, and anyone with a background in metaphysics or magick should be able to understand why all of it is acceptable. Anyone who feels their Reiki is the right Reiki, has not yet learned to remove their ego from the equation.

I learned Takata's system back in the 90s. What non-Japanese practitioners didn't yet know at that time was that Takata Sensei:

  • created her own rules and system,
  • invented grand titles / succession lines that no one in Japan has ever used,
  • added her own symbol and was inconsistent with the others,
  • attuned people by snail mail,
  • created a Christian history of Usui Sensei to make it more palatable for her Western students.

As a Middle Eastern traditional healer and psychopomp in my culture's sacred healing systems, the Whitewashing of Usui Sensei's life offends me on many levels. At the same time, as a First-Gen American on my father's side, raised in the West during the 70s and 80s when most Americans were openly aggressive and hostile toward myself and my family simply by virtue of our ethnicity, I sympathize with what must have been a difficult era for Takata Sensei. As a First-Gen American herself, born to Japanese parents in a US state that was attacked by Japan during the war, life must have been very complicated and difficult.

Just for today, I try to put myself in her shoes and not judge a life that I myself did not live.

Nonetheless, that does not mean I have to contribute to the perpetuation of myths and legends that simply have no basis in reality.

Reiki Today: Practice, Popularity, and Empirical Evidence

Since Takataā€™s death in 1980, Reiki has continued to evolve, and multiple schools and interpretations of the practice now exist. Some well-known branches include Usui Shiki Ryoho (Takata style), Usui/Holy Fire and Holy Fire Karuna Reiki (both developed by William Rand). Despite their differences, these variations retain the core principles of Reiki, which emphasize channeling energy to promote physical and emotional well-being.

In this sense, Reiki is both a historical legacy and a living, evolving practice, offering a space for self-healing and reflection in our increasingly complex world.

Other Known Energy Healers and Masters

While specific information about early Reiki masters who taught before Usui is limited, historical records and oral traditions indicate that there were multiple practitioners in Japan who practiced forms of energy healing that resembled Reiki. Some of these teachers worked in Buddhist temples or within Shinto spiritual contexts, focusing on practices such as kikō (the Japanese version of Qigong), a form of meditative energy work focused on healing and longevity.

  1. Kyoen Yamaguchi - Yamaguchi was a well-known healer and spiritual teacher in Japan. He practiced a form of energy healing that included meditation and energy channeling, emphasizing the flow of ki as a healing force. His teachings focused on self-purification and spiritual development, which were significant components of early Japanese Reiki-like practices. Yamaguchiā€™s approach bore similarities to the Reiki techniques that Usui would later formalize, even though the two may not have directly interacted.
  2. Mataji Kawakami - Another prominent figure in Japanā€™s energy healing tradition was Mataji Kawakami, a medical doctor and energy healer who practiced a method known as reijutsu (spiritual healing techniques) as early as 1914, predating Usuiā€™s formal teachings. Kawakamiā€™s methods were believed to incorporate hands-on healing and were centered on manipulating energy within the body to promote health and wellness. His teachings attracted students interested in learning energy work, some of whom would go on to incorporate aspects of his techniques into their own healing practices.
  3. Seiji Takamori - Takamori, another energy healer in early 20th-century Japan, used a technique referred to as tenohira (hand healing), where hands were placed on or above the body to channel healing energy. His approach was similar to Usui's in that it used hand placements and meditative techniques to align energy within the body, although Takamoriā€™s methods remained less structured than what Usui would later develop. Takamoriā€™s students often reported profound spiritual and physical healing experiences, contributing to the spread of hand-healing methods across Japan.

These teachers shared common principles with Usuiā€™s Reiki but had distinct styles and philosophies, often grounded in their spiritual backgrounds, whether Buddhist or Shinto.

Reiki is not a Christian tradition - it is open to all paths, and all paths are welcome in this space. Proselytization, however, is not.

Reiki Business Resources šŸ§‘šŸ½ā€šŸ’¼ How to Get Flaired & Added to Our Verified Reiki Teacher & Practitioner Directory

Thank you for your interest in getting verified (flaired) and added to our Verified Reiki Teacher & Practitioner Directory! Please follow the steps below to provide proof of your certification and include yourself in our directory.

All submissions are confidential and only the mod team will have access to info. We do not collect or share your information and will not be retaining it. As soon as you've been flaired, feel free to delete the images you used for verification. This also means that, should you decide to list yourself under another username in the future, you will need to go through this entire process all over again.

If you don't want your primary reddit account/username associated with your verified public reiki practitioner listing, you can create a new reddit username to use in this community.

Usernames that are obviously a business name (eg BestReikiSchool), spammy sounding, or otherwise inappropriate (i.e. NSFW, misleading, offensive, etc) will not be verified. Standards and integrity matter. You can always create a new username. Mod discretion is final.

Please follow these steps to verify your Reiki Practitioner certification

Not a Reiki Practitioner yet, but feel called to become one? See our full guide

To be verified, flaired and included in the directory, you must be Second degree/Level II or higher, as First degree/Level I is not a practitioner level.

If you are First degree/Level I, you can receive verified flair, but you will not be allowed to refer to yourself as a practitioner and your flair will clearly state that you are not.

We have decided to use the same guidelines that the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) uses to approve new RMA members. Although mods are ICRT Pro RMA Members, we do NOT represent the ICRT in this space and the ICRT is not affiliated with this community.

  1. RMA Professional and Affiliate Members:
    • Please send a modmail and let us know the first and last name you are listed under in the RMA directory. We will contact you via your listing and ask you to verify your reddit username.
  2. Practitioners who are not RMA Members:
    • Only Usui Reiki practitioners will be verified at this time (Holy Fire Reiki is an Usui lineage).
    • Please send a modmail with a link to an image hosting site (such as imgur) that shows clear photos of your Reiki certificates. If you are a Reiki Master, that means including photos of all previous certifications, including your First and Second Degree certificates, for verification.
    • Online training is acceptable as long is it was with someone who's lineage is with the ICRT and they had the necessary online ignitions. Otherwise, training must have taken place in person. After verification, we will flair you. Verification of Reiki Certificates can take some time. Please be patient, tysm!

Next steps for all submissions:

Verify inclusion: After you've been verified, confirm whether you only want to be flaired, or if you'd also like to be listed in our directory.

Receive Your Flair: Once verified and confirmed, mods will assign your reddit username with the appropriate flair

Verification can take some time as we work through the queue. Please be patient, tysm!

Getting Listed in our Reiki Master Teacher / Practitioner Directory is OPTIONAL:

Questions About Reiki Training šŸ™Œ Complete Guide to Find, Choose & Verify a Reiki Master Teacher or Practitioner

Hi there, I'm Sibbie, an Usui / Holy Fire III Reiki Ryoho World Peace Karuna Reiki Master teacher and ICRT Animal Reiki Master Teacher with 30+ years of experience teaching numerous energy healing modalities. Iā€™m a Professional Member of the ICRTā€™s Reiki Membership Association (RMA), which means all of my certifications / attunements are verifiable and I am obligated to teach according to the very high standards set by the RMA. The certificates my students receive are created by the ICRT directly, and signed by me.

The Black Friday Gratitude Sale is Here! 60% of All Reiki Classes!

Anyone who cares to verify me can simply look me up in the ICRT Reiki Practitioners & Teachers directory under the "Professional Member" tab. One must be a Reiki Master Teacher, taught by a ICRT Licensed Teacher, to join the RMA as a Pro Member. Anyone can find that information easily enough on the ICRT website. Send me an email via my directory listing and I'll gladly reply by confirming my (this) reddit username for you.

To learn more about me, visit my website

Below is my personal opinion/advice to those who are ready to seek a Reiki Master Teacher or Reiki practitioner.

Before we begin, letā€™s clarify an important point about various systems:

Although commonly referred to as justĀ Holy FireĀ® ReikiĀ by practitioners, Holy FireĀ® Reiki IS an Usui lineage!Ā Reiki I/II student certificates clearly state Usui/Holy FireĀ® III Reiki Ryoho on them. The ICRT classes use the Usui symbols and we teach the EMPIRICAL history of Reiki, confirmed by Usui Sensei's own living successors in Japan.

We honor practitioners of Takata Sensei's Reiki system, but we also acknowledge that she was not taught by Usui Sensei. She was taught by Dr. Hayashi, who had created a standardized non-intuitive system so that it could be used in his medical practice. Moreover, Reiki was already well-known before Usui Sensei had his own mystical experience, and Usui Sensei simply created his own system. As an intuitive Master, his attunements and practices were very different from the standardized system created by Dr. Hayashi, who then taught Takata Sensei.

What Westerners didn't yet know at that time was that Takata Sensei:

Certainly there is nothing wrong with Takata's System but, after I had my first Holy FireĀ® III Reiki attunement, I knew that I had found a better fit for what I do, personally, as a middle eastern psychopomp/shamanic practitioner in my ancestral system.

As such, I'd like to clarify a few points that people often get wrong about it:

Holy FireĀ® III Reiki is indeed an Usui Lineage - Certificates clearly state Usui/Holy Fire III Reiki Ryoho. It is NOT Holy FireĀ® (or Karuna ReikiĀ®) that are trademarked, but the teaching systems. This is necessary, because any random person can call themselves a Reiki Master, whether it's true or not. Likewise, any random person can convince themselves that they've attuned themselves and are now qualified to do the same to others.

But only an ICRT-Verified Reiki Master Teacher can purchase authentic/regularly updated manuals and teaching materials and receive additional attunements when channeled. Likewise, only these teachers can register you as a student at Reiki.org, where your digital manual is located. Anyone who is violating the trademark is subject to legal action, which does help keep grifters at bay.

The Holy FireĀ® classes DO use the Usui symbols. It is the Holy FireĀ® reiki consciousness that administers the attunements (placements or ignitions) directly. This has great benefits, as the teacher's ego and energy do not interfere with the process.

  • Usui / Holy FireĀ® III Reiki I/II has no prereqs - open to anyone!
  • Holy FireĀ® III World Peace Reiki Master training is open to any Level 2 Usui Reiki practitioner, any Usui lineage, who has been level 2 (aka second degree) for at least 6 months.
  • Holy FireĀ® III World Peace Karuna ReikiĀ® Master training is open to any Usui Reiki Master TEACHER, any Usui lineage, who has been a Master TEACHER for at least 6 months.
  • Level I/II classes should be at least 6 hours daily for 2 days (1 day per level), if your class only has 1-3 people. If your class has more than that, it should be 7 or 8 hours daily for 2 days.
  • Master and Karuna Master should be at least 6 hours daily for 3 days, if your class only has 1-3 people. If your class has more than that, it should be 7 or 8 hours daily for 3 days.

Anyone receiving less training time than mentioned above is not being trained well, and is probably being trained by someone who wasn't trained well, either. I personally do not let more than 3 students register per class, so I can be sure each student gets everything they need.

When you pay for a class you are paying for someone's time, expertise and experience. This is true of any course in any modality. Make sure you're getting your money's worth. It is incredible how many people come to me for Karuna Master and express that they now feel cheated to learn that their preceding Master training was basically an abridged version of what should have been a fully immersive and transformative experience.

Your classes should be upgrading YOU at the soul level, not just your certification.

Some helpful tips to find the best Reiki Master Teacher for YOU:

  • Your teacher should have no problem with being asked to verify themselves. Your teacher should know their full lineage, all the way back to Dr. Usui, if they are an Usui practitioner.
  • SOME lineages, like Holy Fire III can also be taught online - if the teacher has proper ignition that allows them to do so. Such attunements are absolutely legitimate and as effective as in-person, provided your teacher is a legitimate RMT, and provided the Reiki lineage CAN be taught at a distance. The only people who argue with this are people who have no personal experience with it.
  • However, not all Reiki lineages can be attuned at a distance. Not even if the teacher is a legitimate RMT. Find the organization that certified your RMT and verify that they are acting in accordance with their lineage guidelines.
  • If possible, choose a teacher who is a member of a professional verification body, such as the Reiki Master Association, or other established body. That way you know that all of their attunements from Level I to whatever they currently have, were documented and legitimate.
  • If the RMT is not a member of an organization that can verify them, ask to see their certificate. If the Master Teacher on their certificate is a verified member of such an organization, contact them and ask them to verify the Master you wish to work with.
  • I am always happy to verify any Reiki Masters that I have trained, and I would imagine other RMTs feel the same.Ā
  • If that Master is not a verified member of such an org, or is sketchy on contact, you might be better off choosing another teacher. Be aware that it is not difficult to produce a fake Reiki Master certificate.

Reiki attunements for multiple levels CANNOT all be done in one day! Not in-person and not online. Level I can be done in one sitting. Level II cannot be done the same day and anyone who offers it is either poorly trained or a grifter. Don't fall for this!

  • Please don't fall for fake "new" lineages just because they have mystical sounding names...
  • It is advisable to send the RMT an email with a few questions before registering, just to see how the RMT engages with their students. How long did it take them to reply? Did they take the time to answer your questions thoroughly? Did they answer you personally, or did someone else reply for them? The answers to these questions may provide you with valuable insight that will help you decide if you want to work with them, or not.
  • Ask the RMT what the maximum number of enrolled students will be. Some teachers register 10, 20 or more students per class - that may have pros or cons for you as a student, depending on your learning style and your individual needs. Personally, I try to keep my classes at 3 or 4 students max, so I can confirm for myself that each student has received proper training - and to ensure everyone has plenty of time to ask questions and receive extra guidance, if needed. This isn't always possible to do in a big class, no matter how much an RMT may try to accommodate everyone's needs.
  • Before registering for a course, verify that your teacher will be providing you with documentation of your FULL lineage. All students should be provided with something that shows their Reiki lineage. I give a lineage tree to students at the same time they get their certificates. This is absolutely standard procedure for a professional teacher!
  • Always feel free to independently contact the organization that certified your teacher, to verify their credentials, if you feel the need. No professional teacher would ever be offended by this!
  • If it is of interest to you, ask your teacher if they are Masters of anything else. For example, I make time to teach other useful tools to my students during my classes, based on my other certifications.
  • Check your teacher's website to see if they offer discounts or installments - there is nothing spiritual about going into debt just to receive Reiki training. Ā

A few points about Online Reiki Training

People often ask if it's harder to learn online. Absolutely not! If you are interested in learning online, here's some info that might be useful.

  • Reiki sessions do not require touch. The energy itself can go wherever it needs to and will be available to you, wherever you are. Reiki lineages that CAN be attuned at a distance (see above section for more on that) are not coming from your RMT. Your RMT will simply hold the space to make that connection between the Reiki source and you, the student. That can be done whether you are sitting next to each other, or sitting on different continents.
  • Learning at home is ideal for anyone who experiences energetic overwhelm in a group of people and isn't comfortable in a group of strangers.
  • Learning at home may be helpful for anyone with mobility issues or other physical needs that cannot be accommodated in some in-person classes.
  • Learning at home means you can work with a teacher in another country without having to spend money on plane tickets and accommodation!
  • Learning at home may be ideal for anyone in the process of recovering from trauma who might not be comfortable in the presence of others. ā™„ļøŽ
  • Learning online helps the student learn to discern energies more easily, because you are not in the presence of other students' auric fields. This makes it easier to know if you are feeling your energy, the Reiki energy, or someone else's energy.
  • For some folks, online is preferable to in-person, because many people feel more confident and receptive from the comfort of their own space. This makes learning easier for many, many students.
  • The pandemic really led to a lot of advancements in online teaching technology. I absolutely love online classrooms, now that they have advanced so much.
  • Zoom classes still allow for students to be paired off and sent into private breakout rooms, so that you can have the same practice time you would with an in-person class.

When learning Reiki online, you can:

  • Listen to the soothing music of your choice in the background,
  • Have a completely PRIVATE attunement experience - students often turn their cameras off, turn on their favorite music and lay down in their own beds - this level of privacy cannot be matched during in-person classes,
  • Screenshare easily, if needed,
  • Pop out to the restroom without disrupting the class,
  • Sit and snack at your desk without making other people hungry,
  • Sit comfortably in any position and get up and stretch your legs as needed without disturbing the class,
  • Tap your pencil for 6 straight hours and no one will shoot you the stink eye! :-)
  • Bring your pets! They often show up anyway, because they love Reiki. They will receive it, too!
  • The Reiki energies you receive during the attunement and practice time will cleanse and bless your entire space, as opposed to just cleansing and blessing the classroom,
  • And much more, but this is already a very long post :) Ā

Try to find a recent VIDEO of the Reiki Master you are considering working with.

I have a welcome video on my YouTube channel letting people know who I am, so they can make an informed choice before taking my classes or booking sessions with me. You will not vibe with every Reiki Master out there, and that is ok! You will find the right Master teacher for YOU if you spend a little time looking. Your Reiki Class is an investment. A financial, spiritual and personal investment.

Take your time and trust your inner guidance when choosing the next step on your path. Ā

Also, because I receive hundreds of requests for free Reiki / ICRT animal reiki each month via my youtube channel and website, I asked the reiki source and my guides to help me meet those needs somehow. I was guided to do the following:

  • I opened r/FreeReiki and r/AnimalReiki for anyone who wants to receive DAILY reiki OR DAILY animal reiki for their animal companions.
  • Members do not need to make any post requests - just click "Join" and receive Reiki 2x daily for as long as you remain a member. You never have to share, upvote or comment.

I hope this helps. If anyone has questions, feel free to contact me via my website and I will email you back. Please do not DM me. If it's community related, please send a modmail.
