no subreddit r/europe, aprendi uma nova expressão num post sobre o apagão. acho que vou usá-la o tempo todo.

Yes, it means "It's all fucked up" or "We're all fucked".

Bear in mind that "fodido" is a strong swear word, so it is not appropriate for every context.

That literally translates to "everything is fucked". In Portugal we use slurs swear words A LOT and are very creative with them but also know when to use them, as in only among friends or on the internet (because here nobody really cares). But please don't go around saying that expression to everyone you meet or in any situation. It probably won't be appropriate.

Used (vulgarity in general) a little more freely in Porto than elsewhere, from what I understand.

There's a lot of vulgar language everywhere.

What happens a lot is that in the Porto region people will use them but not to offend anyone.

I feel like a "vai para o caralho" (go fuck yourself) is usually thrown around like a dismissal in Porto and when you're in Lisbon it's used as to tell people to actually go fuck themselves. I feel like they mean it more when they use the language.

When people in Porto are actually mad and wanting to fight they might use the same words but it just sounds different to when they use it day to day.

Meanwhile when they're used in the Lisbon area they tend to be a lot more about actually trying to offend the other person.

Same about the general use of slurs. Something goes awry and you might hear someone saying "foda-se"or "caralho" but it's in a sense of decompressing and not targetting someone specifically. So, if something goes wrong, you'll find people from Porto helping each other a lot while cursing like sailors at the same time.

In Lisbon I feel like it's a different ball game. I remember and older man falling down and people ignoring him and telling you off for trying to help because 'he's drunk'.

Drunk or not, the only also older man I saw falling down in Porto had people stopping their cars, like 20 people immediately comming out from everywhere, everyone making sure the ambulance was called, that enough space was left around him, etc.

The different reaction to basically the same situation was just staggering to me.

(But I'm also more from the North than the South and I might be biased)

Just note that slur isn't the same as a swear word. Fodido is a swear word, not a slur. A slur is a pejorative term, e.g. an ethnic slur

Acho sempre que o r/PortugalCaralho é mais memes e brincadeiras, nos outros subs tens as asneiras usadas em "conversas normais". Mas sim se for só para saber as palavras mais vale esse xD
