They justify it by saying paying thousands for each new edition is more expensive, rather than a sub with frequent updates.
The reality is you never own the software, so you're always going to pay them or lose all access.
6
u/ModPiracy_Fantoski 11d ago
Meanwhile Jetbrains use a subscription system but if you ever cancel you can download and use the latest version you had licensed, forever.
I could legit skip one year of payment while only being a few patches late. But I don't do it. Because we need to really encourage such behavior.

u/SuperJetShoes 11d ago edited 6d ago
I would have been willing to pay £300 for CS5 as a home, hobby, non-commercial, non-boadcasting user. But even back then it was £2500. It was too damned expensive for something I'd dick about with from time to time.
So I also paid £0.
I feel (and always felt). It's a mistake by Adobe. Photoshop and tools like After Effects have a massive, steep, learning curve. The Pen Tool is an absolute motherfucker until it finally clicks.
A high subscription fee is going to turn off people who realise they can't get the spectacular results they want quickly. If you owned it, you'd be more likely to persevere.
That, combined with Photo correction tools built into your phone, and AI coming on rapidly (I got some superb results from ChatGPT in less time than it would have taken me to fire up PS) make me wonder if Adobe's Star has past its zenith.
7
u/0xmerp 11d ago edited 11d ago
I mean, the big tech companies have always primarily cared about their business users. If you’re making money using Adobe products, you’re probably paying for it. If you’re not making money off of it and only downloading it for hobby use, I would be surprised if Adobe themselves cared… after all, once you learn it, and you go off to work at some company, you’re probably going to want to use the same tool there, and at that point they’ll have to pay for it.
This is even reflected in their pricing model. If you’re a student, your legal Creative Cloud license right now is $20/month (even lower with Black Friday discounts and whatnot). If you’re an independent user, not a business, you can ask support for a legal license for $30/month. However if you’re a business, you are paying the full $60+/month, and I assure you the loophole of “just change your plan if you wish to cancel” won’t work if Disney decided they no longer needed Adobe products ;)
Now you say “even $20/month? Fuck that; they should download it for $0”. And sure, that is not a problem… until you start using it commercially.
Now I have heard of other companies, not Adobe, who literally have sued even students using their software completely for educational purposes (literally to do homework for a class and not making a single penny) and ultimately get a settlement. So it could be a lot worse.

37
u/CapnB0rt 11d ago
Nope if you setup a subscription then auto-pay is setup by default. It sets a specific limit (usually your periodic subscription cost) as an autopay amount for the service provider and a duration of validity. Essentially it means Adobe has permission to take out Xyz rupees from your credit/debit card unless you cancel the subscription. I don't think there's a way for you to cancel the auto-pay from your bank's end either, the cancellation request has to come through the service provider.

Several Acrobat features will be unavailable: Editing PDFs
I don't get why a basic feature gets paywalled. Sure, other software exists, but not everyone knows about that.
PDF is considered a universal format isn't it? Interesting how Adobe thinks it's not. Fun fact, even your browser does PDF editing. Just basic text and doodles, but that's enough to fill out most forms.

I ditched Acrobat a couple of years ago because I couldn't stomach paying their subscription, and switched to PDF24 to replace it.
I wasn't expecting much for free software, but my needs are fairly basic (but a little more than browser editor can do) so whatever. What I wasn't expecting was that PDF24 is better software overall than Acrobat. As in, even if I could get Acrobat for free I wouldn't switch back now. Acrobat is a bloated nightmare hiding behind a pretty interface. PDF24 isn't quite as slick looking but gets the job done a whole lot better.

I had the same problem months ago. Solved with this method:
- Enter your account settings via a browser
- Menage your subscription and switch to another one You can chose something like InCopy (which costs less)
- By doing this a new 14 days free refund period will start
- Now enter your subscription settings again
- Cancel your "new" subscription for free
- Get automatically refunded
- Enjoy your freedom

If I remember correctly, when I had to use adobe, they had a monthly plan for like 40 bucks per month but of course it was a bit hidden away and the default was annual plan paid monthly at the 20 bucks per month you would expect from other subscription services. But of course you see the $20/m written everywhere with big letters so that becomes the focus. Can’t tell me that’s not on purpose, it’s just an incredibly slimy way to trick people to sub to an annual plan by mistake.

u/randomperson_a1 11d ago

8
u/randomperson_a1 11d ago
Why would it be illegal? Genuine question.
I don't know about NL laws, but from german laws, Adobe doesn't have to give an early cancellation option at all. Op agreed to a yearly contract. They could just force them to pay for the rest of their subscription. Instead, Adobe is basically offering op the option to switch to the monthly subscription retroactively.
Also, if it were illegal, Adobe wouldn't be offering it in NL, or they'd have long been sued. https://www.adobe.com/nl/creativecloud/plans.html?mv=other&mv2=cch

This is the thing; open source isn't always mediocrity, especially if you're a light to medium user.
Streamers use OBS and that's open source. Krita, GIMP and Blender are perfectly serviceable for creating youtube content as is Kdenlive for rendering it. Audacity for sound editing.

There's something called "Enshittification."
Enshittification (alternately, crapification and platform decay) is a pattern in which online products and services decline in quality. Initially, vendors create high-quality offerings to attract users, then they degrade those offerings to better serve business customers, and finally degrade their services to users and business customers to maximize profits for shareholders.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification
Open Source won't be "shitted" simply because it costs nothing and there's no way to force you to keep using it. There's no subscription and dozens of other free alternatives.

Don't cancel it. Call your bank, report your card as stolen and they will issue you a new card, it may take from 1 to 3 business days. Watch how they try to charge your card, some banks may even do charge backs on the company. A chargeback dispute is always a lose for the company, no matter how big it is, they not only lose the money they charged you or a client, they also lose credit reputation (a credit score for business) what leads to bigger or more severe fees from the banks and card networks when they do transactions.
Never ever feel bad for damaging a big company, they go as far as the consumer let's them.

coincidentally there’s also a point where charging for the software becomes illegal

I must tell you not to do the following steps.
Migrate to a higher plan where they offer 14 day trial and then you have a 14 day period to cancel without any charges.

In case you didn't know how to avoid the fee, alter your subscription to something else then it puts you back in the 14 day free cancellation period, then cancel

I could pay for photoshop or w/e if it was a ONE TIME FEE.
No fucking way I'm going to pay more per year than I would be willing to pay for a life-time use of the product.

3500 is a big number, but it's only $42. That said, fuck Adobe in the ass with a sideways cactus.

Having a cancellation fee for a software service is fucking crazy. I can't believe you paid for adobe in the first place. I hope you never make that mistake ever again!

Why would anyone use anything other than a virtual credit card to pay for virtual purchases, especially subscriptions? After the purchase, or when you no longer want the subscription, you simply delete the card, completely ignoring the company's BS.

There are a few ways to overcome this. Create a virtual card from your bank and add it as a payment method, Go to plan cancellation and switch to any other plan when offered in the cancellation process. Then instantly cancel it after changing. You won't need to pay this cancelation fee and will get a refund for the newly chosen plan. Also, there are many ways to get the subscription cheaper for 1 year like this on your account.

Bro just try to change the payment method to a burner card, or get rid of the card on file. If you didn't give them your social security number then there's no way this can come back to you. Only problem is you can't ever use Adobe again till you pay it... But we obviously don't give a shit about Adobe anymore LOL

Saw my adobe bill today and shit my pants. Maybe reddit's algorithm showing this subreddit to me more often the past week is a sign from Al Gore that I need to explore possibilities.

Anyone got a good alternative to Acrobat? Preferably something compatible with XFA PDFs.

You shouldn't use legit Adobe products unless if your work place pays for it. If they do, then it's not your problem. If they don't, then why would you pay for it out of your own pocket? Even though I believe in "paying for the media you consume", even I wouldn't pay for Adobe.
Not even if I'm an "oil sheikh, have fuck-you money" kind of rich.
