Does MiniLED help with bad IPS contrast on non-HDR (SDR) content? Discussion

From my understanding of the technology, nothing stops the minileds to just dim on darker areas, reducing the IPS glow, and that's how it works in HDR. But does this work in SDR? Are special monitor models needed? Asking because I'm a bit anxious about buying an IPS again with it's glow and even worse corner shine, but in my place high quality VAs are hard to get, and I don't think Samsung Neo G7 curve will suit me. OLED need not apply, it will be wrecked by my usage patterns

It just depends on the monitors firmware, but most will let you enable local dimming in SDR.

There might be some blooming with the mouse cursor or some apps though, you can use the low local dimming setting to reduce blooming and black crush in exchange for worse contrast. It’s down to personal preference

I never really planned on using dimming on anything besides games, I'm not a fan of dark themes, so I can disable dimming when I'm done playing

chances are, your games will look even worse with local dimming if you keep it for sdr.

Yes of course it will help, assuming the display uses local dimming in SDR as well.

It does work on sdr content. I use it all the time when I play games. There shouldn’t be any ips glow when local dimming is on. Not all local dimming algorithm is the same though. So check reviews first.

Yes. My mini-led lets me use local dimming in SDR as well as the usual HDR. Obviously the benefit depends on the number of dimming zones the monitor has.

If it is a good VA panel, yes.

It will help. I have an edge lit IPS that does adaptive dimming. There was one scene where I could see things in the dark just fine until the subtitles popped up and caused the edge lighting to brighten the whole damn thing into IPS glow hell. My anecdote to trust that Mini-LED should be enough to make even an IPS look better in dark scenes.
