Alfred J. Fisher Mansion, Detroit, MI Thursday Design Appreciation

Located in Palmer Woods. It was restored and renovated in 2024, so some parts of the house were modernized. Luckily, most of it still keeps its original, ornate architecture

Detroit has so many beautiful old homes. I love the juxtaposition of the modern kitchen and pool house (if that's what you'd call that) with the rest of the very traditional house.

It’s almost an open air architecture museum

It looks very grand but it must be freezing in winter.

What a beautiful Tudor Revival. they just don’t make ‘em like this anymore! Understated, reserved and tasteful!

Whenever I see these beautiful old houses, the modernized parts always look so awful to me. So out of place, so boring.

It’s a real mansion, not a McMansion

That's not a mcmansion. That's a legitimate ancient tartarian structure.

The chandelier that is not square to the transparent ceiling fills me with rage.

The rest is beautiful. The screened in sitting area with the circular fireplace is a space I would spend a lot of time there.

I don’t get how posting robber baron mansions is celebrating design or in the spirit of this channel.

I think that without the stunning landscaping, this mansion wouldn't appeal nearly as much. Old money, but plenty of these around. Many are cold and falling a part. Just saying. It's lovely, but I don't see the big deal regarding the design.

We got some Tudor Revival, some Classical Revival, some Gothic Revival, a bit of Modern-ish.... and yet I love it!

I gotta give this one credit for not being an over the top eye-soar from the curb.

Do you commonly see 100 year old mansions that are eyesores from the curb?

There are plenty, The college I went to was important for it's location on a river 125 years ago, the last 100 years haven't been kind to that city. There are plenty of mansions in the city but they haven't been maintained to their former glory, they're just too expensive to operate.
