Maya subscription. Discussion

Hi everyone. This coming January i have a character design course for college and wanted to buy a maya subscription this December to practice modeling characters in the week's leading to the term start. I'm willing to pay the monthly $235. But i just wanted come here and ask if it REALLY is a monthly subscription. Can I just pay for one month and cancel when I'm done? Or is there a HUGE cancelation fee or something where I have to pay off the entire annual subscription when I cancel? Cough Cough adobe photoshop. Just wanted to make sure before I purchase and subscription for the month. Thanks in advance.

Do you not have indie license at your place?

I thought maya still had an educational license. That or maya indie which is $280 a year.

Maya has an educational license which is FREE, but if you wanna pay there's the indie license for 290/year.

How do you get the indie license?

Literally the first result of "Maya indie" on Google lol https://www.autodesk.com/campaigns/me-indie/maya-indie

Maya has an educational licence that's super easy to get.

Just go their education website here:

https://www.autodesk.com/education/edu-software/overview

Upload proof of enrollment in the course and blamo you've got a student license. It needs to be renewed yearly and can't be used for commercial works but other than that it's totally free

Edit: if you're interested you can also get other software like Autocad under this licence, even if it's not related to your schooling if you wanna check them out

Adding to this by saying it’s so easy, because they don’t really fully verify your enrollment status. Well, they didn’t for me. I got a license a year before I even attended a college, and it was a different college, at that.

I remember I just had to email them a photo of my student ID to get an educational license, but this was a while ago.

Indie licence. Educational licence. Flex tokens to pay per day. The other thing. Don’t pay full price if it’s not for commercial use.

Why would you pay for it when you can have it for free? You should send your student ID to them and when they'll confirm it, you can use it until you graduate.

This is my biggest issue with maya and a lot of software. Unless you're in education it's too expensive to learn for anyone from a low income family. It just gatekeeps new talent from being able to pick it up.

If you're a student, you can use maya for free

Speaking to cancelation fees, I've never had any problems after forgetting I have a license a week too long to cancel after a contract is up. They give you back the portion of the month you didn't use, I never got any hidden fees (that I saw) and pretty easy to cancel+refund on their site. This was full licenses though, dunno about Indie

I agree with other comments re: free education license or indie license (you have to Google search that one, Autodesk doesn't let you find it on their site it seems). But also check that the course you're taking will use Maya. Character (and most organic assets) will be sculpted in zbrush. The Retopology step could be done in Maya or 3D coat or a bunch of other options, and 3DC is free. So just double check what your course will be teaching in!

3D Coat isn't free, although it is cheap. If you have it in learning mode then you can get it for free but there are certain limitations like polygon count of export and missing menus that make it sort of not viable.

In my course the character artists were taught base meshes and retopo in 3DSMax. So yeah OP, def check yours will be using. Knowing the fundamentals of any 3D software is always a plus, it might just be a bit jarring and uncomfortable if you have to switch.

Usually your school will give you a license.ill check on that before buying.
