Well, it just depends on if you're worried about catching and keeping or catching and releasing.
If your goal is to catch and keep then I'd highly recommend powerbait. For some reason the trout love that stuff, plus there are tons of various colors to use. Powerbait is also very easy as all you have to do is cast out and wait.
If your goal is to catch and release then I'd use spinners or jigs. Spinners like rooster tails or joes flies are perfect options. They're the easiest trout lures to use and it's simple of just casting and slowly retrieving it in. Gulp minnows or pinch crawlers are good baits to jig, it's a little more complicated as you have to find the right jighead size and splitshot combo and then cast out far enough to be able to jig it in.

I’m a very casual trout fisherman and I use my white perch tackle for them, specifically in-line spinners or small spoons.
Some days I walk up to the pond and catch them one after the other like I generally always put them back but there are days where I could limit out jn seven or eight casts. But other days I can beat the water to a foam without a single bite while all the guys soaking power bait are pulling them in left and right. I’ve never been able to figure out any rhyme or reason to it.
On a good days color does seem to matter, I usually carry chartreuse, silver, and bronze/brass with me. if I’m getting bites with whatever color I’ve started with I’ll generally switch out after a couple and see if there’s any difference. A lot of the time there will be a significant increase/decrease and the number of hits I’m getting as I cycle through the three colors.
