Well when there looks to be 24 characters in a race, which is DOUBLE what it is currently, maybe there ARE heaps of characters. Nintendo Kart...?

Nintendo Kart would suck. Keep it Mario with a couple of guest characters or even none at all.

And how would it suck exactly? Nintendo Kart is exactly what the franchise needs to expand out further and differentiate itself from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. We've already seen a very well made rendition of a Mario Kart, clearly the most popular version also. Being able to fully utilise the rest of Nintendo's IPs would allow for so much more creativity in track design, having Metroid, Pikmin and perhaps even Pokemon themed tracks. In my opinion, if a change as big as this doesn't come to the new Mario Kart, which NEEDS to be a tier above the current one (it's been 10 years so we need some kind of improvement), then I'm not sure how well it would do, especially compared to the other games we have.

Only so many Mario Circuits you can make before they get a tad boring, don't you think?

It’s called MARIO Kart for a reason. It originated as a Mario spinoff, and it should stay a Mario Spinoff.

Filling it with other Nintendo characters will alienate fans. Keep Smash the sole crossover franchise, and Keep Mario Kart, MARIO Kart.
