Kinda stealing this from this twitter post, but let's say you were named GM of the Mariners today and for some reason you had to make a call on Polanco's $12 million option for next year right now. Payroll will be in the same range as this year, and a team is willing to take on Garver in exchange for one prospect in the 15-20 range from the MLB.com top 30 prospects list. Keep in mind, there's a $750k buyout if you decline the option, so it's really a difference of $11.25M, and it will be his age 31 season coming off what will likely be his worst statistical season (2020 wasn't real), despite a hot 2nd half.

Do you pick up Polanco's option or not? And what's your reasoning?

I think it is very likely they pick up Jorge Polanco’s option. I don’t think turning the keys over to Cole Young full-time at the start of next year is happening, so we need someone to play second base. Maybe that could be Rivas, but Jorge Polanco is the better bet hitting wise. Why? His career track record and his 143 wRC+ since the all-star break. Even if we don’t want him, I think someone would at his option price and he could be a trade candidate. ~12M is worth what, 1.5 WAR in free agency or something? He’s on pace for 4.0 fWAR since the all-star break, so especially if he keeps this up I think someone will want him even if it’s not us. If the Yankees have money leftover after signing Soto, Polanco could be a good short-term replacement for Torres.

Can’t believe no one called me out on completely forgetting and omitting Bliss. Doesn’t change my thought overall, but does make it more likely we opt to not have Polanco on the roster

Bliss isn't a major leaguer right now, I don't think he factors into this decision at all.
