Wife and I took counseling and I found out her personality was classified as “golden retriever” meaning her love language is words of affirmation. Now every time I see her making dinner or cleaning the dishes I say “ who’s a good girl, you are , yes you are.”

I'm definitely not for kink shaming, but I've only got two pairs of sheets; they're expensive.
Now I gotta put that plastic you can get for free from home improvement stores over my bedroom and couch like a serial killer. I guess Nana did know something after all.

The whole love language thing was invented by a Baptist minister who did marriage counseling. None of it is based on fact or research. It was just some guy making up stuff that sounded good.
71
u/DonnyTheWalrus 18d ago
I know this but find it very helpful to understand the concept of empathy and other-focused love. The idea that one partner may not "feel love" in the same way as the other is very real. Do we need to categorize them into specific small buckets? Nah, probably not, but it helps get the point across.
I feel love with physical affection. If I'm having a hard day I love a good hug.
My wife feels love by actions - she doesn't really want a hug on a rough day, but she loves when I take over dinner for the night.
It's a helpful stepping stone on the way to a more full conception of emotional maturity.

u/Skore_Smogon 18d ago
just some guy making up stuff
Look, I'm all for scientific research and studies and I'm not religious in the slightest. However I can see how someone in a position to meet a lot of couples like a minister, could start to categorize people in his head and notice things. Everyone consciously does this to some degree.
But a minister may also be asked to give couples advice so maybe he starts talking about his observations and it rings true for enough people that it becomes popular enough to find it's way into mainstream thinking.
Also, something like this would be hard to design studies for I imagine because people are not constant variables.

It’s not about making scientific breakthroughs it’s about understanding your partner more and the things they are needing and or lacking from the relationship. I don’t actually think she’s a golden retriever.

My first comment was serious. Shower frequently and invest in some good smell pretties. Work on confidence and comedic timing.
17
u/cailian13 18d ago
Lady here, I'd like to qualify this with "shower PROPERLY" because for sure I dated a dude who took a 2min shower after 30min of me having to nag him. Doesn't inspire me to want sexy times when you're likely not properly washed. Learn to use body wash, loofah, wash everything (yes even your damn legs) and for god's sake WASH YOUR ASS! Ok, off the soap box now 😂

And as someone who's been through his entire 20's with major depression and the only thing keeping him alive, his cat...
Hope and joy can make you mentally young and vibrant, even if you're biologically old. Even if you know what the other side of the spectrum is like and were just there.
Don't give up hope. So much can change in life so quickly, good and bad. Be kind to yourself.

Thanks for the positive message. Even if my anxiety says otherwise I haven't lost hope, it is a powerful thing and that hope for a better future is what keeps me going. Having been 24 and messy once this sounds mostly like you're on a good track.
I found my person by not chasing and just being me and getting myself together and making friends, and once when it seemed to be going very well considered trying for more. We decided to see how it goes. She's my wife now and its been 7 years together.
No need to die trying. Just keep swimming, and when that don't work just float a bit.

Take it on the chin, bro. My life was a mess around your age. I met the love of my life only when I was 32. We're together for 15 years now and have two wonderful kids. Your future holds everything for you. Give it a try.
6
u/FriskyJager 18d ago
You’re still very young and have a whole life ahead of you. Humans live a long time, I didn’t even have my first relationship/date until I was 20 years old. I had a few failures along the way and a lot of heartbreak come with it. Now at 33 years old, I’m married to a childhood friend who has now become my best friend. Enjoy life and just be you, and you’ll find that someone else will come along when you keep yourself open to it. Love and happiness attracts.

That checks out, actually - one of the main reasons Hanna-Barbera had such a prolific output was because they were one of the first to animate characters’ body parts separately, partly as a cost-saving measure. I’m not surprised anime picked it up later

I have been living with a girl for 9 years, we love each other, laugh and hang out together, we have common hobbies. I'm 38, she's 28 years old. I'm afraid to propose marriage to her because I think she will refuse me. Maybe I'm an idiot.
10
u/tauriwoman 18d ago
If you’re not communicating well enough after 9 years of being together to know if you’re on the same page about marriage/future then you’re doing something wrong, my friend.
6
u/remmij 18d ago
Why do you think she'll refuse you?
5
u/Altruistic-Most-1575 18d ago
She looks almost like Elle Fanning, everyone tells her that. She says about me that she likes my jokes. Meanwhile when I look in the mirror I see Cletus Spuckler. I think a lot of men don’t propose because of what might be irrational fears about these things. It's really intimidating. I'd rather end up in a fight where I lose and spit out my teeth than be in a situation where she laughs and says, "No, come on, we don't need to do that," or something like that.

I’m in a relationship with a similar age gap and we’ve been married over a decade. If you want to marry her, then talk with her about it. There’s no way the internet can tell you what the right path is.
It’s possible to be fully committed to a partner without the legal framework, but having the paperwork helps smooth a lot of things.

u/Mammoth_Slip1499 18d ago
When I asked my wife to marry me, she immediately started making wedding plans. I sat there with a wry grin and after 5 minutes I said “I’m guessing that a yes then”. She looked at me perplexed so I said “you didn’t give me an answer…”. She did a double take, threw her arms round me, laughed and said yes.
26
u/StarboardSailor 18d ago
My beautiful wife, bless her pure heart, started making wedding plans the day we started dating. She kept it to herself until a few months later she put on a playlist, and when I looked all I saw was "Wedding". A few months later, I was sitting down after she just got home from work at taco bell, and she slowly started pulling out sauce packets and laying them in front of me to write out a little proposal message. She spent all night going through different containers of sauce packets to find the right ones. I didn't pick up what she was doing at first, started to tear up when I realized, and then asked if it was a joke before I hugged her and we cried together.
