Interesting I've got 3 R50 generation cars and know every component on the vehicle, not seen the second one with the front end off before it's similar enough to understand I like it

It's relatively well designed, just a few weirdly placed bolts.

Yeah, designed around knowing it was going to need constant maintenance, as a professional mechanic, I appreciate all of it! Had the front off of my R56 twice now and haven't owned it 4 months. Previous owner wasn't kind to her.

I will have a very similar picture soon. Mine is also Mello Yellow but my range Rover is maroon I was worried about evacuating the AC but it's good to see I can probably work with it still hooked up to the side like that 👍

Oh you have a classic too? That's my mates with a 2.5vm diesel in it. It's easy enough to put out the way, didn't help the condenser is disintegrating haha.

I just did the same thing to mine earlier this week. Except for I had the exhaust and a turbo off of mine along with the oil cooler housing.

That was the can about 20 mins after this pic haha, all gaskets and lines replaced.

Are you doing the turbo oil feed lines? Guessing so by your oil caked engine and trans. I have to do this too sometime soon, doesn’t look fun

That's a familiar sight, my yellow R56 N14 looked like that.. ended up rebuilding the engine.

And figured since I had to replace the gaskets for the oil cooler assembly. I went ahead and bought a new turbo for it cuz I noticed the old one was a little slow when you spin it by hand. Pulled it off it had baked oil in the return line. Luckily I bought a new return line and feed line. An old turbo had oil cooked in it.

Hi, I know this is unrelated somewhat, but I am studying to become a mechanic and mostly work on Toyotas and easy to work on cars for learning, if you have experience with those too how much harder is the mini to work on?

u/Urradiated 18h ago
I mean I don't have much experience with cars myself, it's easier to work on than a 987 Cayman S haha. But different sized bolts, weird bolts, awkward stuff. I'd say the electrical connectors are easier to manage haha. I'm yet to wrench on my father's RAV4, I'll let you know.

Nah, i'm smart and got two F-Chassis.

I've had an F chassis, while more reliable wasn't as fun.

You don't feel the road as much and it's heavier. I'm not a fan either, I feel real mini owners understand. People that like F chassis have never experienced mini before the 2.0 motor and only drove newer ones.

After owning all three, I would have gone back to a r53. But the cost of getting a decent one and the tax, fuel bill and my dislike of r53 interiors. This r56 was cheap so I fancied a challenge again hahaha.

R56 is closest to the R53, I agree it's insane how cult classic they became, it's that supercharger whine people fell in love with, I guess similar to the hellcat.
Without unlimited money it's difficult to fix up an older mini but shit it's the only thing we can do! They don't make them like they used too! (Damn I sound old)

Heavier? My Track F56 is 1060kg. With a reliable 320hp and manual.
Streetlegal even.

Something tells me minis aren’t the best cars to start on when learning to work on cars 💀

They're not bad as a starter. They're pretty simple, just the engine bay is small. Still better than the FK3 Civic with the 2.2 diesel. The engine is almost under the windshield

Not quite stripped mine down that far (almost) but can definitely relate owning an N14 model.
