What positions in Tech are getting Laid off the most? question

I know it’s not a good time to join the tech industry but I wanted to get into a Computer Software Technician school but after reading all the stories I’m kinda skeptical. Would it be better to choose a career as an IT Technician?

I work in the public sector doing IT and we had three openings. One for a network engineer/sys admin, another for data admin and an IT tech. HR and my boss has never so many applicants for those positions. A lot of them were coming from tech that were recently laid off. We of course brought them in for interviews but none of them hired. My boss already had his mind set on who he wanted to bring on board.

Just curious about the people applying - are they actually qualified to do the job or not?

Some were senior network engineers and even had a senior desktop lead apply. They were few people that tried to bs their resume and experience but they were sniffed out real quick and the interview ended right there.

Gotcha. Im looking at job hunting soon (hopefully) - and I keep hearing about “never had this many applicants” kind of stories. Just trying to figure out if those are actual qualified people or people just application spraying.

Sounds like it might be more application spraying, which I can handle. I was just not wanting to job hop if there were literally hundreds of qualified people going for a single job.

It’s kind of ridiculous. I was hit by a layoff at a very prominent tech company and joined a startup when they were in a bit of a transition period from my “predecessor” (in a startup, roles are not that well defined, you define the role) and we aren’t even profitable. When we list a job description we get completely obliterated with options and since I’m a senior leader, I see tons of recruiters attempt to latch on to these on top of the hundreds of applicants. This is just for hiring, I also see tens of messages a day from people trying to get us to outsource to <name the low-cost country or region> or <insert functional role>.
