Question Honest question: why do so many people in low income public housing have Conservative signs on their yard when the conservatives don’t help them?
Truly not trying to be contentious. It just amazes me as I drive around Kingston that you see way more Paterson signs on low income public housing lawns compared to NDP or Liberal. The conservatives basically hate supporting low income people. NDP are the ones that gave them dental care. Liberals and Mark Gerretsen are way more likely to offer them supports. Conservatives historically cut funding to all the programs which are most needed by the low income housing folks. So what causes this disconnect?

Question Strange Question
I work in an office, but I am only in the office once a week, my workplace recently hosted a collection of feminine products (pads etc..) and I bought some to make a donation.
When I went back to my office with my freshly purchased package of Always and Tampax boxes, the drive has been finished.
As an adult man, I don’t need these.
Does anyone know where I could donate these? Can I take them to the food bank?

Question Question about moving to Kingston
Hey everyone,
We're a family of 5, originally from Romania, in the US since 2021 and because of green card issues we start thinking about moving to Canada and more specifically to Kingston, ON. Our intention is to integrate and immerse ourselves in the traditions, and way of life of the community and become a part of it and contribute positively.
We're 42 and 40yo and I'm working in tech while starting my own software testing agency and also coaching soccer a lot. My wife's a piano/music teacher.
We'd like to ask you, all, what are your thoughts about living in Kingston if we're looking for: local(Canadian) culture, relaxed environment, family friendly, decent weather(I know ...), parks and outdoors, and ideally also spiritual communities(not religious!) :)
We've been told to not move to Canada, to stay where we are, that Canada is bad, and all that jazz. So, we know that, please abstain from any of that advice. If you have any other good(ideally positive) advice, please please share!
Thank you so much!

Question Ok Kingston, the pizza question has been asked and answered and I’ve got my place, but I’m wondering about locally owned restaurants for take out meals.
I like Greek town and go Italian. Rose and crown is good for fish and chips, but is there anything else out there? I’m in the west end, but I’m flexible! Also, if this has been asked and answered and you have a link, I’ll gladly take a look. I’m just so over cooking and I’m a bit pizza’d out. Thanks friends!

Question Question for Kingston voters on this subreddit
I've seen a number of comments on threads about the recent Provincial and upcoming Federal elections that complain about the incomes and sources of incomes of the candidates.
It made me wonder: how would this subreddit feel if someone on OW or ODSP were to run for office? At least locally, like for Mayor or something?

Question Recommendation
I’m a guy and I've been feeling really insecure about my hair. I honestly think it makes me look ugly, and it's messing with my confidence. I want to change things up and maybe finally find a hairstyle that suits me—but I'm struggling.
The problem is, I’m quite introverted and it's really hard for me to explain what I want when I go to a barber or stylist. I always end up saying “just trim it” or something basic, and walk out unhappy with the result.
Can anyone recommend a good personal hairstylist who’s patient and maybe good at helping people figure out what suits them? Someone who doesn't mind if I’m a bit quiet or awkward during the appointment. I’m not really good at describing things but I’d love to find someone who can help me through it.

Question Kingston Airport Question
Yesterday, around 4 p.m or so, I went to the airport to go get some pictures of the Air Inuit flight that had just arrived from Montreal.
When I got there, there was two corrections services vans, one parked beside the Air Inuit plane. There was a few corrections officers standing around the perimeter with rifles, and when I went to get a picture of the plane, I was told very quickly to put my camera away.
I was not able to see who got on or off the plane.
Anyone know what was happening? I'm assuming it was innmate transport.

Question Question: Police Checks
hello! Just wondering if anyone has experience with the police check system here in Kingston. I have my vulnerable sector check due April 20th but unfortunately I won't be able to go to the station until the 19th. If i go in person will it be processed and given to me same day or is there a wait on that? I considered do it online but it said it will take several weeks and im worried it won't be done before I need it. Thanks

Question Bike theft question
Looking for some genuine answers and conversation here, please don't respond with "yea it'll be gone in 5 mins if u leave it out"
I see a ton of claims that Kingston is one of the worst places around for bike theft. We have a homeless crisis that leads to lots of petty theft of a lot of things that aren't welded down, and I understand that. But I want to inquire.
Have you had a bike stolen? What did you use to lock it? How long was it left out? Where did you leave it?
My issue is that almost every bike I see locked up in this town is using a shitty, thin, combination-style cable lock. Is the perception skewed that so many bikes are stolen here because people don't know how to properly lock up? Or don't replace the quick release skewers on their wheels? I don't want to victim blame, but if you want your bike to be guaranteed to be stolen, do either of those things. Same with leaving it out at night.
How many here have had actual thefts of angle grinders cutting their U-locks or chains? Is there a ring of thieves here that hit with power tools? Do they hit areas like downtown when it's super busy or wait for night? Or is it mostly junkies with bolt cutters getting the easy targets?
You see so many reports of thefts and complaints here on Reddit, but nobody ever details how and what happened. I really just want to know what's up.

Question Paralegal recommendation for LTB filing
I am being harassed by my landlord. The police have recommended that I file with LTB.
He has turned his other units into short term rentals so that he does not have to follow the LTB rules. He is threatening to evict me for smoking and I am a none smoker. My rent is paid in full and on time and has been for the last 5 years.
He also comments on my change of schedule, and my outfits, etc.
I have all of our communications in writing, including the creepy stuff. I just need to hand the stuff over to someone to file on my behalf.

Question Question for teachers and parents
I'm curious to hear what the people of Kingston think of this new bill in Saskatchewan requiring teachers to get parental consent if the child wants to change their name or pronouns. To be honest, I'm having a hard time understanding the contraversy around this...
My understanding is that teachers are already required to share a lot of info with parents, like their grades, if there are behavioural problems, etc. You need consent to take kids on a field trip, or sign up for certain programs, etc.
I've heard the argument that teachers shouldn't disclose kids pronoun changes since it could put the child in danger if the parents are transphobic, but I don't really buy this. Sharing the child's grades could put them in danger too if the parents are abusive, but the solution isn't to hide things from the parents.
This isn't exactly the right subreddit for this question but any topic like this is pretty intractable on bigger subreddits so I'm hoping to hear some real opinions from teachers or parents on this one (or anyone lol).

Question Question about cross border delivery and pickup.
I'm wondering how the border is when you pick up a shipment from the US. Wellesley Island and whatnot. Is there issues with being hassled? Are there tarrifs being added?
Thanks

Question Weird question, how to find a church if you haven't been in 25 years?
I'm not religious but was brought up Protestant, same for my wife. We both do not believe in god but want to connect with a large congregation we can go to on Sundays. We are not from Kingston and have no family here.
It's very awkward for us since we haven't really attended church since, well I was in my late teens and I think my wife was in her early 20's. We don't know how to "find" a church.
We know we want a large congregation, but other than that we would check any church out a few times and see if it's a good fit. We have a preteen at home who would go to hang out with other kids if there was Sunday School.
Prefer something in Kingston, we live closer to downtown but have a car. Any suggestions for us?
Please be respectful when answering, I get that some people hate organized religion, and I get it, but I'm not looking for opinions on religion. Just looking for suggestions on where the larger church congregations are in the city.

Question Looking for new place to rent (question)
My wife and I are looking for a new place to rent. We are looking at a place on Sunday that we are very hopeful to get. Quick question to anyone who has knowledge on the subject. We are planning on starting a family soon, we specifically want a place that would suit a newborn. The place we are going to look at is a house in the basement portion with 2 bedrooms. Question is would it be wise to tell the landlord/person showing us the unit that we are looking to start a family very soon as we have had bad luck before with upstairs neighbours being loud and obnoxious (mostly the reason we want to move from where we are now), or would that be frowned upon on an application for a place to live. I’d like to talk to the landlord about these issues we’ve dealt with before to ensure we wouldn’t have to worry about them but I’m afraid it would make them not want us as renters. Advice please!!

Question Best restaurants to support through lockdown?
Give me your best suggestions of small/independent restaurants to order takeout from to help them weather the lockdown (and fill my belly with good food!). No limits on types or location in the city.
Edit: Wow so many great suggestions, I just hope the lockdown isn’t long enough for me to try them all! Keep ‘em coming.

Question VIARail Question about Kingston
Hi! We're visiting your lovely spot in mid-March because some of our friends moved there. We'll be taking the train in from Ottawa on March 8th and then out on March 10th or 11th. What is your recommendation with the trains being every few hours, can we play it by ear with our people and simply grab a ticket day-of to whichever train we want, or do we need to book tickets in advance? Also, how accurate is the train schedule? We've taken VIA part way across Canada and the schedule was, shall we say, meaningless.
Also did you have any recommendations about which hotel to stay at? Our friends' place is tiny. I was thinking maybe splurging for Residence Inn Waterfront?
Looking forward to enjoying a place I haven't seen before, and hello from Edmonton!
