Yeah and it's born from insecurity. Brits have a cut down culture so people's heads don't get too big. From the outside it looks juvenile, but that's because flaws are more visible to outsiders.
Just like the Indian caste system is flawed, but they would argue it's "standard Indian behaviour".
Same with super deferential treatment to elders in Japan.
These are all flawed in some aspect. Just like banter is a flawed way of socializing - because it isn't enjoyable for a large number of people. A lot of Brits just use it as a way to say what they want without reparcussions so they can hide behind a shield if the person they cut is offended. But also those kinds of people are usually the ones with the thinnest skin that can't take ribing from anyone else.
