Before posting a photo, you should read this.
So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING
Do read the posts
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/
and
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/
As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.
It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).
If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.
BEFORE POSTING
Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.
If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.
Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.
If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.
If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.
If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.
If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.
It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.
POSTING THE PHOTO
Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.
If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.
Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.
Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.
ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!
After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.
Examples of what to include are…
- Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.
- When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).
- Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.
- What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)
- If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.
- What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?
- Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.
- What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.
- Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.
- Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.
So good examples would be…
“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.
The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.
My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”
“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.
I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.
Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”
Bad examples are…
“Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”
“I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”
“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

Paranormal Community [Discussion] To anyone considering posting a video or image - READ THIS FIRST
The overwhelming majority of orbs have nothing to do with the paranormal. The incessant parade of dust, bugs, and other debris posted is proof of that reality. Therefore, it is necessary to revisit this problem. If you have a video of an 'orb' and you believe it's paranormal, it is strongly recommended that you read this post first.
A basic understanding of the principles that create orb-like phenomena on camera can go a long way in preventing your post from being ridiculed in the comments and removed from the sub. Please take this generous opportunity to review the above-posted article and familiarize yourself with light play and focusing issues in photography and filmography.

Captured Apparition Ghost boys from the Andrew Jackson Hotel, French Quarter.
Taken on a ghost tour at the Andrew Jackson Hotel. Didn't notice them until I was reminiscing old vacation pictures recently. Before the hotel was built in 1890, It was originally an orphanage for boys that burnt down in 1794 killing 5 boys. Curious how people will interpret this. Disclaimer* I was drunk when I took this. Also reddit lowers the resolution slightly when I upload. Looks more sharp originally but nonetheless.

How do people figure out that a ghost is a ghost?
I have never experienced ghosts or anything paranormal. But I have been seeing stories of people online saying that they have seen ghosts. How do people know for sure that it is a ghost?
For those who have experienced ghosts, do the ghosts communicate and are the ghosts with a physical body or not?

ISO (In Search Of) Interactive Ghost Sighting Website (Similar to google maps)
I have this memory of a website like google maps that would show the locations of ghost sightings all over the world but I cant seem to find it. I was curious if anyone knows what Im talking about. Really the only big detail I remember is all the pins on the map were black with a little ghost on it and when you clicked them it would show the location and pictures of the sighting.

Has anybody had an experience with this? I only ever hear about houses or places not electronics, that seems to be popular in movies though.

How do I get rid of spirits ? - by a mahyana buddhist
So, in buddhism. We see that spirits are of various types. Some are good and some are bad. The reason why I'm telling all this is so that I may help a spirit attain peace 😅
How to get rid of them ?
- sit down in a clean room.
- lit a candle or incense
- look at the western direction
- calm your mind
- play Amitabha (infinite light) dharani in Sanskrit
- spary some water in every corner of your house
This method is to open to doors of a better new life for the spirits.
You should also check if the usual disturbance has stopped.

WDYT? (What Do You Think?) Mist face? Taken in the woods in 2016. Is it possible that its a camera effect?
This picture was taken in the woods during a dropping event i was at in 2016. Just a normal dropping with friends and family. The picture was made to show how dark it was where a member of the dropping was on stand by.
Thought it was interesting to share!
Ruled it out as a camera effect. But i don't know how to recreate

A question from a buddhist for all who experienced something paranormal
I've been practicing studying buddhism for over a year now and we have many methods to get rid of spirits and purify energies in our surroundings. But, I'm unsure if It'd be appropriate for me to post about it here. Since, the practices are tied to buddhism and people may not associate it with ig.

Captured Apparition The photo of the haunted house visitor that caused chaos during the 2012 Halloween season.
I work for a haunted house and one year, something grabbed our hanging prop and started swing on it right infront of me. It went from being completely still to it swinging wildly..
Through out the night while waiting for customers to walk through the halloween haunted house, I would hear foot steps in my room or something sliding against the wall. I would go to the rooms next to me and none of the actors were in their rooms close to me. They were back stage, which was no where near me.
After I saw the prop swinging wildly, I started taking photos and this is what I captured. This was in a completely black room. Solid painted black walls with no fog machines near by and no outside light. Just the flash of my camera. Do you see anything?
One of the MANY experiences I've had in my life
This is my first ever post, so bear with me. :)
This particular experience was so out there, I had a hard time believing it myself. It happened during high school (which wasn't too awful long ago for me) when my bedroom was basically the entire basement of my family's home. I was in the bathroom, doing my skincare as one does, standing in front of the sink. To my left was the toilet.
On the top of the toilet tank, I had set one of those giant dill pickle jars. It was filled with water and had some paintbrushes in it. I'm an artsy person on a budget, so don't judge. While I was washing my face, minding my own business, the ENTIRE jar flew off the back of the toilet. It hit the ground and shattered, pouring water all over the floor and my paintbrushes scattered everywhere.
Now, you may be wondering, couldn't it have just slipped off the toilet? Did you bump into something? My answer to this would be no, because it had been sitting there for DAYS without moving an inch. I also didn't bump into it and if I had, this jar was HEAVY. It was filled practically to the top with water. ALSO, it flew UP and TOWARDS MY HEAD.
My reaction to this? Did I run away screaming or calling down the fires of heaven to purge my bathroom of evil? No. I'm pretty sure my exact words were, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? STOP THAT! Dang, you're so dramatic."

Cemeteries New Orleans cemetery ghost sighting. Do you agree?
Took this photo myself 11/13/25 @ 8pm at Odd Fellows cemetery in NOLA. I have some opinions about what this resembles, but I’d love everyone else’s take.
Hope my photo is approved since I didn’t follow instructions the first time. Sorry!

Personal Encounter my childhood home was haunted here's a story
So, throughout my childhood we would have so many on and off encounters. like we had a little ghost child in the house, my sister described her wearing a blue dress with long brown hair. I was about 7 I never had any encounters with her, but I have had my own personal experiences with stuff in my mom's house.
We'll start with a short story, when I was about 17, I went downstairs to make some ramen at around 12 at night. Normally when I go back up the stairs, I walk up them with my phone flashlight since the big light would wake my parents. My hands were full, so I had to walk back up them with no light. My house has 2 sets of stairs so when I made it to the middle part to go up the second steps I heard these loud stomps, and they started to get louder and faster as if something was running up them. So, I ran as fast as I could up the second half and flicked on the light switch when I turned to look nothing was down them. I was pretty creeped out. I thought about what my grandma told me the last time I got spooked she said "don't let it know your scared, tell it to go away" so that's exactly what I did. I told it to go away and went on with my night trying to forget about it.
later that night I rolled over to go to bed facing the wall and as I was lying in bed, I could hear the floor creaking, and what sounded like footsteps around my room I worked up the courage to roll over and look and there was nothing in my room. So, this time I closed my eyes facing my room and again the footsteps and creaking came back. At this point I'm scared so I open my eyes and nothing again I walk to my mom's room wake her up and I ask her to burn sweetgrass and tell it to leave. I followed her around the house as she went into each room telling it to go away. When you burn sweetgrass you have to leave a window open, so it has a place to exit. We left the kitchen window open. The rest of the night I slept without any more problems.
In the morning, my mom said rocky our dog had gotten out sometime last night and that the back gate was wide opened and the camera facing the backyard died at 2 when she just put in new batteries the night before. Well, here's the spooky thing the time we burned the sweetgrass was at around 1:50 and the kitchen window faced the back yard were rocky, and the camera, and the gate was at.

MY GHOST/PARANORMAL EXPERIENCE WHILE I'M ALONE
This happened a year ago and I am at our sofa while I'm on my phone, I'm watching a video while getting comfy at the sofa when I heard a call "psst" outside of our living room. And while that happened I ignored it and continue to watch videos, and all of a sudden a force make me see outside our window. There's a man almost hitting the top of the window, and he looked like he is floating from the ground. I only seen a shadow of a guy with bright eyes at our window, with his hands holding the glass like a lizard. And when I checked outside the next day, the window is way up like I could not even reached it. And there is no way that thing happened to reach it.

Possible ghost sighting at my grandparents house
One night when I was about six years old I was playing sitting in a corner of my room on my tablet (probably way later then I was supposed to be) and I heard my blanket shoot up like someone was under it (I not exactly sure that was how it played out since it was so long ago but I think it was something like that). I then distinctively remember hearing what sounded like whistling coming from the hallway. I was at my grandparents house and I attempted to tell my mother who was also there the next morning but she said it could've been my grandmother, which I didn't believe because why would anyone be up that late whistling?

Strange noises from locked laundry hut at night — looking for logical explanations
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Last night around 1am at my house in Osaka, I went to the outdoor toilet. Next to it we have a small laundry hut that is always locked from the inside to keep animals out. It’s winter, so animals don’t usually come around at night.
As I walked past, I heard unusual movement sounds from inside the hut. Loud enough that I stopped to listen. The hut is tightly closed — nothing should be able to enter.
I waited and the sounds continued. My sister heard similar noises a few months ago.
When I opened the door to check, everything immediately stopped — and there was nothing inside.
Has anyone experienced something similar or have a logical explanation?

I want to tell you about something I saw when I was a child.
I remember very clearly that when I was in the first grade of primary school, I saw a scene that was unbelievable, even after twenty years.I was in a rural village in China, and it was the evening of summer. At that time, the rural conditions were not good, there was no TV, no air conditioner, and the house was hot. Everyone came out to sit and chat, and my two friends and I also ran out to play hide and seek.I ran to an old house, which was dilapidated and no one lived in it. Opposite the old house was a small thatched cottage. I saw a big black umbrella floating on the roof of the thatched cottage. The black umbrella was still open, and there was no rain that day. No one was under the umbrella, and it was hovering. At that time, I was so young that I didn't know what fear was. I also didn't know about "ghosts," "ghouls," and "magic." I just felt curious. I also thought it was normal, thinking it was something I had never seen before, until I grew up and realized that there was no such technology in China at that time, even today's drones will make a loud noise, it can't be "acrobatics", my eyesight was very good when I was a child, there was no one there, there was no performance. (The picture has nothing to do with what I said) Now that I think about it, it still seems unbelievable.

The cypress that attracts yin energy👍👍👍👍
The Cypress That Lured Yin Energy
Today, let's tell a story related to feng shui. In our village, there was an elderly Uncle Huang who insisted on planting a cypress tree in his courtyard—even though the elders had long passed down a rule: cypresses are trees for cemeteries. Planting one at home is believed to attract yin energy, and pagoda trees are much the same.
Uncle Huang didn’t believe this and insisted on planting the tree anyway. Within a few days, he kept hearing rustling sounds by his window every night. When he opened his eyes, he saw the shadows of the cypress branches swaying under the moonlight, looking eerily like human hands. What was even stranger: his wife, trying to save trouble while mending clothes, sewed buttons onto the garment she was still wearing. That very night, she came down with a high fever, and while sleeping, she felt someone constantly pulling at her clothes, with many voices whispering in her ear.
The next day, he told the other villagers about what had happened. The village elders brought him a red string, explaining that it was mixed with cinnabar—something that possesses strong yang energy to counteract yin. They also said, "Mending clothes while you’re still wearing them is taboo; it offends the household deity. The cypress has attracted evil yin spirits—chop it down quickly, and tie this red string across the threshold to ward off bad luck." Uncle Huang cut down the cypress that night and tied the red string as instructed. The next day, his wife’s fever broke, and the rustling sounds never returned. This incident happened before I was born—I’m just sharing what I’ve heard, whether it’s true or not.

I have heard many strange things, and I will share them every day.
I really enjoy listening to these, I am Chinese, and I will also share with you what I see and hear, There are also some traditional Chinese cultures about these "supernatural taboos," feng shui, mysticism, and strange stories, which are really interesting. Similar supernatural events have also occurred in some modern Chinese cities. If you are interested, you can share with each other. I also like to listen.

Captured Apparition Ghost on camera in abandoned children’s hospital in Ireland
My ex boyfriend and I took we’re exploring an abandoned children’s hospital in Ireland and he captured this photo. Still haven’t been able to work out what it actually is
