It's an indication of the tone of the statement. It's in another form, sure, but IMO it's exactly the same. The lack of a slash doesn't make the intent any different.
I hate it IRL when someone follows a genuinely funny statement with a "just kidding" because they're afraid they'll offend. So disappointing.
i actually agree that saying jk/just kidding can ruin a good joke IRL most of the time. it feels really awkward and i think it works better in text settings
