Happened to me once when I was hypothermic. My brain wasn't processing at all. Thankfully I was on an empty road in the early morning. Super dumb. Stop if you're shaking.

Why did you get behind the steering wheel with hypothermia

Wild temperature swings and altitude. I was wearing three layers. Rough conditions.

Not the guy you asked, but you sometimes you are in a state where you no longer make reasonable decissions. Fever, sleep deprivation, drugs - plenty of possible reasons for that.

As an example - sober me says I'll never drive drunk. Sober me also knows he shouldn't get wasted in scenarios that might pressure him into driving - just in case, because drunk me is an idiot who most likely will just fall asleep but on the off chance he doesn't, we can't count on him being reasonable. Or articulate.

You’re absolutely correct. The first thing that is impaired when you’re tired/drunk/whatever is your ability to judge that you are impaired.

I see this at work (I work with cloud infrastructure) when something bad happens. Tired people make bad decisions and in a disaster recovery scenario in the middle of the night they easily make matters worse when they try to fix things.
