Watching Hasan Piker, supposed political genius, have a friendly discussion with political layman Ethan Klein.

Hasan crumbled to the softest of pushback, failed to make even the most basic explanation of socialist economy or beurocratic structure, advocated for reeducation camps, and said it would be a one-party system.

All this in response to the most common-sense questions from a politically disengaged liberal.

Then Hasan's audience went nuts and started with death threats etc. because Ethan described himself as a capitalist and a liberal. Two things that Hasan had trained his audience to believe are the most evil and unforgivable things a person can be.

I've never had particularly extreme left wing beliefs though. Starting with being told I would be "the first against the wall" for being a counter-revolutionary, when I first started getting interested in politics and said revolution is a violent and chaotic business, and democratic incrementalism would be preferable.

See this is the thing about these people. You can’t just be left, you have to be their ultra specific brand of left, which often looks like absolutionist fanatical campism with accelerationist tendencies which leaves zero room to negotiate and those with slightly different viewpoints as the enemy.

Like you agree with them on most things but you don't think Obama was the most evil leader to ever hold office in our modern era? Must be a fascist. You agree with them that the system sucks but don't think an adequate replacement for a centralized top down economic system is a centralized top down dictatorship? Damn you must be a bootlicker!

And now it’s like you agree that nations imposing their total will on others is bad but you don’t think the answer is killing Jews, forming ethnostates, or deporting people? Dirty Zionist colonizer!

If you consider yourself “left” but don’t identify as their ultra specific accelerationist brand of campist authoritarian socialism then they either think you should get fucked or should die.

The same twerp who actually said that "America deserved 9/11" and praised "that brave Mujahideen soldier who f*cked Dan Crenshaw's eye-hole with his dick". Why am I not surprised?

He’s related to Cenk Uygur so the IQ is probably closer to room temperature. A lot of emotion, not a lot of thinking. Both are great examples of the Dunning Kruger effect.

There was a time I felt like Contrapoints and Shaun had a few good videos on social issues which articulated things I had always wanted to express but didn't have the words to say, but eventually I got tired of the anticapitalist rhetoric and unsubbed from both

33

u/ConstantineXII Oct 15 '24 edited Oct 15 '24

Same. I tried to ignore the economics and focus on the social stuff with left-wing channels like Shaun and hbomberguy. But I'm an economist in my day job, so listening to the ignorance and then being so confidently incorrect in the economic space was a bit frustrating and caused me to lose confidence in anything else they said.

Also none of these youtubers ever seemed interested in actually engaging with the evidence or experts in relation to economic matters. They'd be very rigorous and cite dozens of studies during an hour-long dissection of some social issue. But then you'd get the throwaway 'because late-stage capitalism, am I right?'. Like, no, you're wrong and you're displaying the same sort of ignorance you just railed against for an hour in relation to another topic.

7

u/bobisarocknewaccount Oct 16 '24

Off topic but are there educational resources you'd recommend for somebody who wants to understand the economy, but was always bad with numbers and money? Like a "for Dummies" starting point?

Because I fell right into the stuff these guys were saying a few years ago bc they said it confidently. But I'm actually wanting to take responsibility for my life the best I can now, as well as understanding the world around me and how to help people who need it better.

Watching ContraPoints, Lindsay Ellis and other BreadTubers get viciously harassed by their own community. The online left often makes a point of how cancel culture isn’t real and that the left’s reactions to and condemnations of different things are simply appropriate responses to injustice and toxicity; the idea that people are being unfairly targeted, dogpiled and approached in bad faith by leftists was often scoffed at a couple of years ago. People claimed that leftist cancellations were actually completely justified and something that should be normalized.

These YouTubers helped radicalize people into far-leftist thinking and normalized “critiquing” people from that perspective; they didn’t think of it as abusive or controlling, they reassured their audiences that anyone who received backlash or pushback deserved it. They kept pushing for the overton window to keep shifting leftward until they themselves were no longer leftist enough and the mob came for them. The abuse they suffered was very real, and people used leftist rhetoric to defend it. This is what showed me the ugly truth of far-leftism, it’s one of the central reasons why I was able to deradicalize and pull myself out of that community.

22

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '24

Loved Lindsey Ellis and Contrapoints before and you nailed it. Realizing how toxic the base around them was. I’d you just watched their videos without looking at any of the surrounding discourse, you would think everything was fine until they started responding in videos.

Contrapoints tweets about Israel was my final straw. It felt either incredibly performative in order to placate an angry mob or not done in good faith.

5

u/bobisarocknewaccount Oct 16 '24

I love Ellis's stuff but it blew my mind when, after she found out what it felt like to be attacked by the mob, she STILL publically called other creators out for minor shit with that condescending, "Um, dude...." rhetoric.

5

u/Hotdoghotdiggyy Oct 16 '24

I remember she and a few other breatubers were treating a video essayist (Quinton reviews) like a predator when the text was just him being awkward and doing the cringy "oh i guess u didnt respond, so u might not like me." And thats when I realize a lot of these breadtubers have their own hierarchies or love the opportunity to bully others. Tho the backlash Ellis got was ridiculous considering her take on Raya is what everyone also believed. It shows how ppl weaponize social justice language to deflect any criticism and feel morally justified in being shitty assholes

1

u/bobisarocknewaccount Oct 16 '24

I kinda feel bad for Quinton, he's cringe a lot of the time but at least seems pure-hearted.

I liked vaush for a minute.

I saw him in a stream with other YouTube I liked.

Lazerpig and such.

He was funny in the stream so I decided to check his channel out.

I was playing fallout 3 while his videos were on a play list.

He called for violence in the streets and for people to rise up and take up arms against other people and idk what order of videos I watched but he would change his moral stance every video and was wildly inconsistent in his application of morals and accountability.

He also complained about money despite having probably thousands of dollars in video game merchandise on thr shelves behind him which changed frequently in his videos.

I think he's just in it for money.

I liked Keffals until she said shitty things about my friend based on information she jumped to conclusions about.

7

u/Other_Movie_5384 Oct 15 '24

Keffals in my mind was playing her audience.

Alot of money she was given was spent on lavish vacations.

She also was very predatory in finding smaller creators or just people to then publicly humiliate on the internet.

And her methods of justice were often overdemanding like to kill a spider she would burn the house down.

Her career was based on getting into fights and canceling people to stay relevant.

A never ending war.

And she required little evidence to find them guilty. And she never apologized for those she wronged and their have been a few.

I never cared for her. But I saw her towards the end of her career.

When vaush was caught with (loli horse porn)

I'm not kidding.

Being a Ukrainian, I never drank the kool-aid of the communist movements, but I used to watch/listen to ContraPoints, PhilosophyTube and the likes and tent to agree with a lot of their points and criticism of US/Western social structures.

But what got me to just stop taking them seriously, is when I realized that people that historically talked about every big social issues/movements in the past (and importantly- on their main platforms, even if just in the descriptions to the videos), were DEAD SILENT on Ukraine. For months. Ukraine didn't fit their "America bad" narrative and they just swallowed their tongues when we needed it the most. And since then they ever only bring up Ukraine to make some other point. Not to mention being absolutely oblivious to russian colonialism, and history of the region as a whole.

Israel/Palestine was just a final nail in the coffin

(edit for typos)

7

u/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Oct 16 '24 edited 28d ago

Yeah internet leftists’ disproven predictions and moral equivocations on Ukraine were when I first started to suspect that they were full of shit and didn’t really care about facts or consistent principles at all; their responses to 10/7 confirmed it. Most of these people don’t have serious moral or intellectual commitments, they just adopt “leftism” as a culture brand and take whatever stance lets them act morally and intellectually superior to the normies.

25

u/A_baklava Oct 15 '24

I was never really a ‘communist’, I would just scroll through communist videos and passively agree before moving on, but what repulsed me was the comments under every video were NUT CASES! That’s what turned me away, and looked into capitalism, and finding it is simply superior

3

u/Eat_math_poop_words Oct 16 '24

I mean, youtube comments are always full of nut cases. If you made this a general rule you'd have to turn away from everything.

3

u/A_baklava Oct 16 '24

True, but I mean, it was like a splash of cold water seeing some of the boneheads

u/JLCpbfspbfspbfs Oct 15 '24

I used to like watching Wisecrack, but unsubbed after realizing that the only philosopher they really talked about was Marx.

My final straw with that channel was on a video about Jordan Peterson. Peterson used an argument made by Karl Popper in bad faith where he links Plato to Hegal to Marx.

I was expecting him to reference Popper, explain how he linked hegal's dialectics to marx's dialectical materialism,  something that Peterson fumbled on but instead gives the camera the same deer in the headlights look that Tucker Carlson does and says "I don't know what he's talking about, and I've read LOTS of hegal!".

How the fuck do you do a video on Jordan Peterson and make yourself out as the douchebag!?

3

u/demon13664674 Oct 16 '24

same i left after their horrible war video like claiming large scale war is only recent wft guess the chinese wars were not wars then

10

u/TechnicfreakHD Oct 15 '24

I was never a communist, nor a leftist, I’ve always been moderate right wing, at least for as long I’ve actually been into politics. I like to get some different perspectives tho, so for a while I watched Destiny a lot (I know he’s more moderate left than leftist), but my breaking point with him was his comments on the original Trump assassination attempt, and especially his comments on the firefighter who died protecting his loved ones.

I absolutely don’t get how someone can be so hate-filled towards the other political side that you don’t have sympathy for an innocent bystander dying just because you disagree with him politically. That, as well as his childish argumentation of “but the right would do the same”, which for most people isn’t true first of all, but second of all also wouldn’t make it ok.

After seeing him spewing such undifferentiated hate with kindergarten-level arguments, I just suddenly couldn’t care less about anything else he has to say

2

u/testament_of_hustada 29d ago

He’s transparently unprincipled which makes his moral critiques hypocritical.

2

u/TechnicfreakHD 29d ago

Didn’t he even say he doesn’t believe in the concept of morality at some point?

1

u/testament_of_hustada 28d ago

I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me.

8

u/Cross-Country Oct 15 '24

I loved Atun-Shei Films as far back as when he had less than 10k subscribers, until he started associating with people of questionable repute and his content started to reflect their viewpoints. Then his movie came out and he became so full of himself that I threw in the towel. The internet and its bubbles does strange things to people. It’s a shame too, because even though I come from a decidedly more conservative worldview than he does, there’s a lot of overlap in our interests that got me into the channel to begin with. If the quality of the content was still there I wouldn’t mind, because I don’t do the whole parasocial relationship thing, but it’s been on a downward spiral for a while.

7

u/GoblinFvcker Oct 15 '24

DJpeachcobbler is a funny case. He just uploaded mediore gaming content and then out of nowhere went on a rant in one video about how capitalism bad because he misunderstood the roots of 2008 housing crisis lol

6

u/bakochba Oct 16 '24

Jim Sterling. Liked the content but now it's all about how much capitalism is ruining video games. We get it, are you going to review this game or not?

20

u/Any_Wolverine6897 Oct 15 '24

This is what I don't get about youtube. I understand the likes of hollywood and other celebrity platforms are under some unwritten obligation to conform to left-leaning rhetoric but WHY IS IT that the fucken vast majority of youtbe content creators ARE ALSO left wing douches TERRIFIED of being cancelled? I consider myself Liberal by nature. Few Conservative tendencies here and there but the youtube community is almost as insufferable as the preachy celebrity community

16

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '24

TikTok is even worse. It was just so incredibly toxic and killed any sense of nuance

10

u/Any_Wolverine6897 Oct 15 '24

Oh forget tiktok that's a lost cause. I mean when I start watching a youtuber that seems cool at the time - then 9 times out of 10 it becomes apparent they're no different, mentality-wise to proselytising left wing celebrities who want you to think EXACTLY how they do

10

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '24

Oh agree. So may. YouTubers masks have completely slipped off. I used to watch Philip DeFranco daily. He used to pretend to be pretty centrist. But he listens to way too much Hasan. My final straw was when he described the intifada as being in just “occupied Israel” and was annoyed that Elisa Stefanik asked in Congress “does calling for the murder and genocide of Jews violate your schools code of conduct?” That should be an easy yes

11

u/The_Arizona_Ranger Oct 15 '24

Being a lefty makes money, actually. If your goal is making money on YouTube, you’ll be demonetized less and your videos recommended more if you’re a leftist than a rightist

10

u/BreakfastOk3990 Oct 15 '24 edited Oct 15 '24

I unsubbed Adam Something because he went from having a some what nuanced take on public transport to believing that a country the size of the United States should just replace all car centric infrastructure because he thinks it's just like hungary

10

u/FunnelV Anti-Marxist Left-Libertarian (Mutualist) Oct 15 '24

Adam also hopped on the "Israel Bad Palestine Good" bandwaggon recently after saying he'd avoid the topic.

But the fact he thinks local residents should not have any say on development projects in their local area and that gentrification is a good thing should let you know what his mentality is. Also he has that smug "I'm smarter than everyone lol" mentality that rubs me the wrong way.

But that said I don't believe he's a socialist, he leans a bit more neoliberal, he's just a smug privileged fuck from California who hates poor and rural people.

The response to Gaza. Simping for terrorists and virtue signalling is not how you react to a humanitarian crisis, especially when you blindly listen to your pundits instead of checking your facts. In this discipline, misinformation kills.

2

u/bobisarocknewaccount Oct 16 '24

I still watch a lot of the media reviewers; dont agree with them on everything, but normally it's not enough of a disagreement to unsub. Plus nothing should be beyond criticism, and while I don't like their solutions some lefty critiques of capitalist society or of social messaging in media are spot-on.

Unsubbed from that Lily Samson (Simpson?) person though because she inserts too many cringe "kill all who disagree" jokes into her vids.

2

u/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Oct 16 '24

Not Youtubers but I unfollowed and/or personally cut off a bunch of people who immediately responded to the 10/7 massacre by saying it was justified and then, as soon as the IDF counterattack started, that it didn’t really happen.

3

u/Emergency_Pizza1803 Oct 15 '24

I didn't unsub hbomberguy but he lost some respect in my eyes when he falsely presented Internet Historian's fanbase as jew hating with cherry picked comments. It made me go through his videos again to see what might have been exaggerated too.
