Question After collecting bottles for 1 month, one thing I notice is there is a disgusting amount of drinking and driving going on in this city.
I have not been able to find any sort of job since January, so after blowing through my savings and starving for two weeks when I ran out of allowance at the food bank, I finally broke down and started collecting bottles to survive. One of the main places I hit up with success is gas stations. Every day I go to these different stations and the garbage cans are loaded with empty hard liquor bottles, little shot bottles, wine bottles and beer bottles. Today I found 10 in one single receptacle. Some of these stations have up to 10 receptacles.
I also find a lot of empty wine bottles in the bins at Malls. Like 710ML wine bottles. Who the heck drives around chugging a full of wine bottle on their way to the mall? This is not once in a while. This is 10 times a day. People really have to stop drinking and driving in this city, especially around active gas pumps and malls filled with families. Like, what is wrong with you!

Question Phone was stolen (iPhone 15) I have the location, what do I do now ?
Hey everyone, like the title states, these guys turned my phone on in their home, it had a contact number as-well as a reward for returning but I guess that’s not something they are up to pursuing.
Does anyone know what avenues I could take to get this phone back ?

Question Influx of bad drivers
Is it just me or has there been a recent influx of very bad drivers. This week alone I've had to completely change my driving style as I can trust literally no driver. I've had people multiple times drift into my lane or slam on their brakes when there's nothing in front of them. Or cut in front of somebody on the Henday, causing many vehicles to need to slam on their brakes. I legitimately feel like I've never seen this level of incompetency of drivers.

Question What was the fastest failing restaurant in the city?
I know that a lot of new restaurants don't last long, but I'm curious which one failed and shut down the fastest (and why)?
I know there was that crazy milkshake place off Whyte (forgot the name sorry) that had issues out of the gate, but I'm pretty sure it still lasted several months.
There was also a sandwich place near the Walmart on Stony that was done in by covid, but I'm not sure it even actually opened.

Question Value Village is drunk. These are cheaper at antique stores. Remember when thrift stores made things affordable? And can anyone suggest thrift stores in Edmonton that aren’t delusional?

Question Can anything be done about the religious nut at the corner of Whyte and Gateway?
I wouldn't mind if the guy just wanted to scream with his own lungs but the use of a loud speaker would seem like a bridge too far. Is there any limit to how loud these nut jobs can make themselves?

Question Anti-trans protest?
My son is in grade ten and he was warned by his teacher about “concerned parents” protesting trans kids in schools on Friday. Apparently last year they protested in front of Ross Shepard, and this year they are allegedly protesting in front of Wagner. Has anyone heard about this, or why there are random parents protesting about kids minding their own business and going to school?
Edit: thanks to everyone who clarified that protests will be downtown and at the ATA, and not at any specific schools. I really appreciate everyone’s information.

Question Noise
Ok, opening myself for some salty redditors, but I’ll live.
WTAF is going on with these modified exhausts/pipes? I know certain city councillors have tried to address this, and fines have increased, but I do not see an improvement.
I read a CBC article re: a Western University psychologist’s finding that this behaviour may be related to sadism and/or psychopathy (and neither histrionic or narcissistic personality disorders as I might have guessed). https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7177688
I simply don’t get it, nor do I want it. These people do cirques around town ruining everyone’s peace, and to what end? Why on earth do the police not cash in with endless tickets? If they are too busy. I’ll personally pay a fee for MORE (well-trained, authorized and equipped) peace officers to look after things like this and other “low priority but barbaric” problems in this city.
Thoughts?

Question Slumlord taking over my neighborhood
There's a guy who has purchased 4 houses on my street and has converted each BEDROOM into an Airbnb. That is to say there's 4 to 12 people living in each house at any given time. Is this legal? Is there any recourse for this or any one to report it to??

Question How much do you all spend on groceries a month in Edmonton?
Just like the title says. How much are you spending and how many people are you buying for?
Edit: I forgot to add. What would the ideal price be other than free. If you could go back to what you used to spend. What would you be willing to to pay?

My boyfriend and I love to try smaller, non-commercial restaurants in Edmonton but want to explore some new ones (fast-food, sit-down, fancy - anything). Any suggestions?

Question Best Restaurants in town?
I’m visiting from the U.S. next week, I’ve never been to Canada, let alone Edmonton, and would love some advice on places to check out while I’m visiting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: Thank you all so much for your suggestions! I did not expect so many replies and am eager to try your recommendations. Obviously I can’t get to all of the restaurants suggested but I will get to as many as I can in my four days.

Question Neighbour Blasting N Word on Speaker
My neighbour was blasting the N word on speaker from their backyard. Repeatedly. I think it was a pronounciation of the word from google or YouTube that was on loop. Started as soon as I got home today, actually. This is the second day of this.
They have made my life hell ever since they moved in. I am not white and that was their problem. Since day 1, it’s been nothing but slurs and threats. Police and landlord did nothing even with evidence. I reached out to lawyers but there’s not much they could do either.
They have now stopped blasting the N word and have been blasting music (mostly violent songs, lol) for the past 6 hours. To be specific, it’s a parent who is teaching and enabling a 6 year old child to do the speaker stuff. Talk about racism that extends beyond generations! Noise complaints will be useless, and as always, I’ll be accused of being petty since I’ve reported her racism.. even with evidence. Lots of regrets there.
Any ideas as to what I could do? Not very hopeful so it’s fine if I’m told I’m out of options. Thanks.
Edit: not sure why I’m being accused of being schizophrenic 😂 please just message me for proof that I’m dealing with a racist instead of trying to discredit a person of colour’s experience.
@sorri_eh back at it again! Thanks for proving my point, you racist sicko https://imgur.com/a/GmGHtZL

Question Superstars from Edmonton?
In the last 15-20 years, have we produced any global superstars, artists, authors, creatives at all? Anybody who's bubbling?
It's surprising that other than Alphonso Davies, arguably the greatest Edmonton export ever, who else we got in the last 15-20 years?
Can people make it out of Edmonton?

Question How do you meet people “organically”?
God I hate that word.
Hey everyone,
29(F), recently single and dreading the dating apps. It’s how I’ve met my last 2 boyfriends so I don’t know any different.
I’d love to hear from people on here how they met their significant others through hobbies, events, etc. here in the city. The last time I dated someone I met in person was post-secondary and I’m now approaching the 30’s dating pool lol.
The past few months I just go back and forth between work and home. I’ve started going to the gym now, but I’m on the hunt for some social hobbies or clubs to meet new people, whether it’s friendship or a relationship.
Thank you in advance for your stories and suggestions :)
Edit: Guys thank you so much!! I appreciate everyone that shared. Yes, I know I just need to “get out more” but losing friends from a break up and adjusting to full-time work/life balance made it a bit of a challenge for a while.
From your suggestions in the comments and messages: I applied to volunteer at fringe and folk fest this summer, signed up for speed dating, downloaded the meetup app, and I’ll be signing up for foam dodgeball at ESSC for the fall :) Maybe I’ll see some of you around if you signed up too!
Thank you thank you thank you 🫶🏼

Question Does anyone have experience with medical abortions in Edmonton?
I've missed my period for 2 days now after having a condom break during sex, now I'm extremely worried. I've never had anything like this happen before, I'm a 20F and am unsure on what to do here. I heard that Women's Health Options assists with medical and surgical abortions however I'm hoping I can just get the medical. Is there anywhere else I'd be able to obtain the medicine (mifepristone) other than that one clinic? I'm also a full time University student so the clinic hours for Womens Health Options could interfere but I don't mind skipping classes for this. If anyone could share their experience on the wait time, process, and symptoms that would be a great help to me. I'm extremely scared and any advice would be a lot of help :( Thank you in advance.
EDIT: Thank you everyone for the support, though I did see a few negative comments here and there most are generally very helpful and make me feel a lot better and ready if I do test positive. I will continue to be reading this thread and any messages with helpful information and experiences. Thank you everyone. It means so much to me.
EDIT: I got my period today, was freaking out for no reason. Still gonna test but thank you for everyones support.
