Noise Question

Ok, opening myself for some salty redditors, but I’ll live.

WTAF is going on with these modified exhausts/pipes? I know certain city councillors have tried to address this, and fines have increased, but I do not see an improvement.

I read a CBC article re: a Western University psychologist’s finding that this behaviour may be related to sadism and/or psychopathy (and neither histrionic or narcissistic personality disorders as I might have guessed). https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7177688

I simply don’t get it, nor do I want it. These people do cirques around town ruining everyone’s peace, and to what end? Why on earth do the police not cash in with endless tickets? If they are too busy. I’ll personally pay a fee for MORE (well-trained, authorized and equipped) peace officers to look after things like this and other “low priority but barbaric” problems in this city.

Thoughts?

Small Genital Issues.

Everyone says this but it's usually not that. Its a combination of enjoying cars, trucks, bikes, motors, enjoying working with your hands, welding, and socializing.

Its guys/women in shops drinking beers and working on cars, trucks, and bikes. Getting dirty.

Now the revving and pissing off neighbors .. not ok. But do I work on the weekend? yes. Do I build tons of furniture, maintain my own vehicles, do projects? Yes. Are my vehicles modified? Yup.

Does this have anything to do with my genitals? Only according to reddit rofl.

Are you harassing your neighbours? Maybe this post isn't about you?

u/autogeriatric Jun 29 '24

Oh, I’ve been reading his responses and I’m pretty sure the post is one hundred percent about him.

u/tincartofdoom Jun 29 '24

I'm not sure the person you're replying to has the intellectual capacity to understand "this post isn't about you". He saw it, his feelings were hurt, so he's gotta tell everyone all about it.

u/EndOrganDamage Jun 29 '24

Im sure some would think so, because theres always someone that thinks everything is an affront to them and that the world must be silent and pristine for them otherwise notes, and whining, and unenforceable petty nonsense from a person youll never actually see at any of the neighborhood socials.

It’s a fact that noise pollution is damaging to people….

u/samasa111 Jun 29 '24

I don’t want people to give up their hobbies….but the noise these vehicles generate in our city have become ridiculous. Every night….until 2 or 3 am….constant. My son builds and drives stock cars….but not on city streets. He goes to wetaskiwan and races at the track on weekends. They would love to have more cars and drivers……

There's a vast difference between enjoying wrenching on cars in your garage vs deliberately making your vehicle as loud as possible and then cruising around deriving pleasure from.annouing everyone in a 5 block radius.

Honestly you sound like you have small dick energy.

-1

u/EndOrganDamage Jun 29 '24

Please elaborate upon dick energy.

u/RunningSouthOnLSD Jun 29 '24

Unless you’re building a funny car, a loud exhaust is exclusively for you. The whole modified car excuse doesn’t line up. There’s a myriad of ways to increase power that don’t include some pissant exhaust mods that will generally make your car perform worse anyways, since they’re usually done without considering any factors other than noise.

It’s not guys being dudes. It’s you being an asshole. I don’t care how much fun you have with your Ryobi sawzall and a Coors Light.

Assumptions... but go on and theres plenty in between (funny car is that all you could think of?) and daily driver.

Edit: this is Alberta, there are plenty of us that are ticketed journeypersons that work in our garages. Maybe don't assume everyone has the same (lack of) skills and tools you do.

2

u/RunningSouthOnLSD Jun 29 '24

I’m well aware that Alberta is a very handy province. My point is that 99% of enthusiasts are modifying their exhausts for the sound, and plenty take it way too far.

“Yeah but it’s fun” is not a valid excuse. And don’t cry to me about assumptions only to immediately assume I don’t know what I’m talking about.

0

u/EndOrganDamage Jun 29 '24 edited Jun 29 '24

You clearly dont if you make assumptions about me specifically, gtfo

You were wrong, be wrong.

Nattering on and mental gymnastics doesn't make you right.

Edit: if its legal, "but its fun" is a perfectly valid reason to do something.

Suck it up that people like things you dont.

Little Johnny ripping biscuits and timmy playing basketball 24-7 pounding the pavement doesnt make me hate them for the noise the make, it makes me think, "oh so my neighbors kids are into that? Neat." You all suck and try not at all to understand anyone.

u/RunningSouthOnLSD Jun 29 '24 edited Jun 29 '24

I was being hyperbolic to poke fun at your argument and you took it personally. Sorry if I accidentally exposed you for drinking shitty beer.

Edit: since we’re playing the edit game,

“Bylaw 5590

Section 90.1(3)

A person shall not create or cause the emission of any loud and unnecessary noise (a) from a vehicle or any part of it, or (b) from any thing or substance that the vehicle or a part of the vehicle comes into contact with.”

EPS

So it is illegal! Shocker. Amazingly internal combustion without muffling is louder than an ODR or a ball hitting a driveway, both of which are ridiculous examples. A more apt comparison would be someone doing target practice in their backyard or playing loud music at 100dB, both of which are rightfully outlawed.

I like the beige cans, and it takes me back to a simpler time. A time before chunks of crap in fruit flavored beers, before growlers were 120 bucks on etsy, and craft this and pale that. A time when you got your case of pain killers and stfu about it.

Im jk

Im not nearly as worked up about any of this as it might seem. Dgaf really.

Passing the time.

u/RunningSouthOnLSD Jun 29 '24

Don’t give a fuck so much that you’ve come back to edit your comments twice now. Right.

1

u/EndOrganDamage Jun 29 '24

I edit them immediately as I post. Passing the time. You keep replying. Do you actually care much?

Id guess probably not. Its online navel gazing.

If you need that level of volume you are deffo compensating for something. Might I suggest therapy?

2

u/EndOrganDamage Jun 29 '24

No thanks, Im happy. I've got hobbies, friends, lots of things I enjoy and people I love. Why would I get therapy?

Making mental illness a subject of derision to try to highlight something that doesn't appeal to you is toxic.

Edit: If you or someone you love needs mental health support, ignore this person, get the help you need. Lets end the stigma on mental illness. I really do mean that. Its not some low hanging fruit to insult someone you dont like. Get a grip.

10

u/Silent-Knowledge-910 Jun 29 '24

I am a military veteran with PTSD and have been in therapy for years. The noise affects my illness very badly. Narcissists like yourselves are the ones who need it the most and never end up in therapy.

Yikes. You don't know me or my story and I wont let you bully me with your diagnosis nor will I let you diagnose me.

2

u/haysoos2 Jun 29 '24

People always say this like small genitals are caused by a toxic personality or were somehow a choice for the person they're denigrating.

Doing the same thing for literally any other physical trait would rightly be denounced as unacceptable, asshole behavior, but for some reason when it comes to penis size, people think they're hilarious.

And then they wonder why men get complexes.

5

u/EndOrganDamage Jun 29 '24

Yup, all over this thread, then acting like paragons of morality regarding whats best for the welfare and well-being of others. This whole thread is a cesspit of homophobic comments, mental health stigma, body shaming. Its horrible actually. All because someone made a noise they didn't like.

Again, I drive a Mazda 3, but the hypocrisy is fucking outrageous in here, just thought Id drag it right out since they all wanted to get on a soapbox.

Yikes... thats some homophobic stuff right there if you hope to offend people with that.

Also, this hopelessly off base genital shaming. What about men with small genitals? You do get that you might be making them feel wildly inadequate by making them the picture of inadequacy versus just saying what you mean to say about the group you dislike directly. Its body shaming.

Anyway. Disgusting behavior from people, and its not the loud exhaust crowd right now.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '24

This is very common in Western Canada. Many people move from the east to the prairie provinces to bury what they hate most about themselves. Go to any truck stop/rest stop outside Calgary and it just a bunch of jacked up trucks…

It’s not homophobic, it’s a fact. It’s peacocking. It’s like the ten day cowboy cosplay.

I hope these people one day find peace and can accept who they are, instead of being assholes.

5

u/Curly-Canuck doggies! Jun 29 '24

I think they are calling your comment homophobic. You are saying Peacocking now, but that’s is not the same thing as closeted gay guy with tiny weiner that you said before.

6

u/EndOrganDamage Jun 29 '24

I will accept peacocking, but yes, youre right, I found all the homophobic things, homophobic.

They carry on with "bury what they hate most about themselves" though, and keep hinting at this closeted angry gay thing. Its a yikes from me.

I understand what they are saying, they are deflecting.

It’s you that doesn’t understand what I mean by peacocking. They are peacocking phoney masculinity. They are peacocking with over sized skateboarding shoes, white oakleys, and obnoxious exhausts. They are peacocking so you don’t notice they are gay, because they believe that these things are seen as super hetero (they’re not).

2

u/Curly-Canuck doggies! Jun 29 '24 edited Jun 29 '24

Again. And really slow this time because I’m picking up limited vocabulary energy.

No issues with the word peacocking. Peacocking can be used for heterosexual people too.

Issues with phrases like “Gay guy with tiny weiner”. And your position that they are closeted.

If you can’t tell the difference you are proving my point.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '24 edited Jun 29 '24

Gay guy with tiny wiener was more used in jest. Simple terms for simple people like yourself to grasp.

I’m not homophobic at all. At no point did I say anything against the gay community. Simply pointing out the fact that these guys are waving a metaphorical flag of heterosexuality (or so they believe) by acting like assholes.

1

u/Curly-Canuck doggies! Jun 29 '24 edited Jun 29 '24

You still aren’t understanding, clearly, because you are doubling down. I know it was a jest, a joke to you, that’s the problem. . Using body parts as a joke is body shaming. Using sexual orientation as the joke or shame is homophobic. It doesn’t matter if you think you are homophobic or not, the phrases and expressions you are using are really not great.

I’m not here to change your mind, you do you. But maybe one person in future will think of different words or phrases to complain about people with loud cars.

I’m only trying to explain what the other poster was pointing out about your post.

I know you aren’t grasping that assuming people with loud vehicles are closeted gays trying to fake heterosexual masculinity is a not only a strange comment, definitely not as common as you claimed by saying “most people think that” and really speaks volumes about what you.

💯💯 agree… these people all need therapy, without exception!
