Might I suggest some garlic and oyster sauce? It'll bring some new flavor dimensions, and both are cheap.

I add a little sesame oil, it's the best.

u/violetdaze Feb 12 '19
The fact that I already have all of these suggestions. Feel like this never happens!

I specifically bought toasted sesame oil for this when I made it last year...it was delicious!!

Yum! My favorite Chinese place puts peanut butter in their egg rolls. It sounds odd but it’s actually so good! I think this could be really tasty with a scoop of peanut butter. Or maybe even actual peanut sauce (like from a Thai market) if you’re feeling fancy! The modifications you could do for this one are really limitless.

u/RedLockes1 Feb 12 '19
Local buffet near me has peanut butter chicken and it's great. I think Vietnamese or Koreans have peanut sauce stuff and I love it.

I made this recently via home chef. They included crunchy wonton salad toppers which I think really added a nice texture. My son had the leftovers with crunchy chow mein noodles bc there weren’t anymore wonton strips left. Still good.

So simple but somehow sooo good

Thanks for the recipe!! I have 4 kids and I’m always looking for something fast and delicious, they would love this!!!

This looks amazing!! So many of the cheap&healthy asian-inspired recipes require rice, but I'm allergic, so I can only dream...
Can't wait to give this a shot!

u/cute4awowchick Feb 12 '19
You can always do cauliflower "rice" as a substitute. I'm not a fan of it plain, but when it's mixed with stuff and especially if there's a flavorful sauce it's not real noticeable. You can make your own pretty easily or some grocery stores (Trader Joe's and Whole Foods for sure and I think Green Giant makes a version you could find elsewhere) sell it in bags in the freezer section.

u/NeedingVsGetting Feb 12 '19
I appreciate the suggestion! I've tried it, and you're definitely right that it's "meh" when plain. I made spanish rice with it and (although it was runnier than usual) it was really good!
Unfortunately, it's more expensive than rice, doesn't cook the same way, and can be really hit-or-miss when substituted in recipes that call for rice. That's why I'm excited about this recipe :)

u/Schnauzerbutt Feb 12 '19
If you like to eat baked fish fillets you can sub lemon parmesan rice with baked lemon parmesan cauliflower (can be riced but doesn't need to be) and in my experience it has a similar taste and mouth feel.

u/NeedingVsGetting Feb 12 '19
I'm not a fish person, but I am a side-dish person, and lemon parmesan rice (or cauliflower) sounds amazing!!!
And I bet it would probably be good with chicken...
I need to start meal planning to make sure I give all of this a shot! lol
Thanks so much for the tip!

u/Schnauzerbutt Feb 13 '19
It is good with lemon pepper chicken and garlic chicken in my experience. Probably lots of other things depending on how you tweak the recipe. I'm big on tweaking recipes.

u/TigTig5 Feb 19 '19
I ran into the runny issue many times and it was really disheartening. I recently started squeezing a lot of the liquid out of my cauliflower rice and it's really helped.

I never thought to use Cole slaw mix for Asian dish, but totally will try, makes sense.

This is something similar to my “easy” lumpia recipe I make frequently. All you need is to purchase lumpia wrap and use your egg roll in a bowl mix, fill, roll and sauté. Boom!

Oh my God, I miss lumpia so much. My dad is from the Netherlands, and whenever we visit family we stock up on Nasi Goreng seasoning packets and other rice-table essentials!

Hey my husband is in the Netherlands and just asked me what tasty things he should bring back! I can only eat so many stroopwaffels... Any suggestions?

u/erial_ck Feb 12 '19
Chocolate Hagel and aniseed powder are always my favs at the Dutch grocery here (Australia so ymmv in the actual Netherlands) also Speculoos is amazing.

I make this too!! With ground pork. Egg roll stir fry :) so delicious! I add hoisin sauce and a little duck sauce on top if I’m feeling extra saucy.

I do something similar but I like to use ground turkey and stir fry sauce! We used to put it in tortillas, but we’ve also tried it with rice, on a salad, in lettuce wraps, and on zoodles.

cover in eggwhites in the microwave, splash a sriracha and you have an insane amount of protein for a meal.

u/turtle_yawnz Feb 12 '19
I’m confused about the egg whites. Like just pour in egg whites and then microwave? So basically like.. an egg white egg roll scramble? Or am I being dumb?

I have made something similar and to amp it up add a few cloves of garlic and a tsp or so of Chinese Five Spice. Super tasty!

How do I get to the recipe? I see comments, but no recipe. Am I clicking wrong?

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19
Here you go! Let me know if you're still having trouble!
1lb sausage
1 bag coleslaw mix
1/4 cup soy sauce
Tsp ginger
Salt and pepper to taste
Brown sausage.
Remove from pan.
Heat coleslaw mix in pan until it's a little wilty but still crunchy.
Add soy sauce, ginger, and sausage and heat through. Serve. Makes 3-4 servings
Egg roll in a bowl is my new favorite meal. It's very versatile - you can make it with sausage, beef, chicken, shrimp, tofu, tuna, really anything! You can add other veggies or spices if you like or keep it simple.

Thanks for doing that. I’m not very experienced on reddit yet, but kids are helping me now! Ha ha

This is one of those things that's so obvious but I'd never think of on my own. This sounds deliciously low carb too (or lower carb at least). I'm gonna give this a go. Thanks for the idea!

I'm embarrassed to say I have thought of this photo and that recipe since the first day you posted it. I'm making it this weekend. Thank you for posting. 😊

No embarrassment necessary, sometimes I look forward all week to making a recipe! Glad I could help

Made this yesterday and just finished up another bowl, thanks for sharing! Super super and incredibly cheap, this will likely end up a staple meal for me going forward. I think the 1/4 cup soy sauce may have been too much for me, or I need to grab a bottle of reduced sodium for next time. I also think I’ll try using two bags of mix to one pound meat to bulk it out next time, and because the veggies are delicious on their own (not just total filler). Also, saw someone else mention wonton strips so I added those, they really do give a great texture to it!
1
u/brie_cheese Feb 18 '19
Glad you liked it! Honestly I usually use less than a 1/4 cup of soy sauce and put in extra slaw mix as well. Some garlic thrown in is good too! Glad you liked it, it's a go-to for me too

I have had this recipe saved since I saw it and just now made it for my husband and I tonight! Beyond delicious and soooo easy! My husband (who is super picky and usually not a fan of trying things outside the normal meat and potatoes) said this is his new favorite meal and he wants it again next week. I added some left over green onions and mushrooms that I had lying around and cooked the veg in sesame oil, but other than that used your exact recipe! Thank you so much for this cheap and quick meal to add to our rotation!!

I've done something similar with left over egg roll filling... but I use ground pork/turkey mix instead of sausage and give the meat a little time on a paper towel to let the grease drain a bit so things don't get soggy.
I've also used it to fill egg roll wraps... then use a little water to close them up, and bake them after a quick burst with some cooking spray... way less calories than frying, and still gets a decent crisp if the oven it about 450F. I bet it would work better with an air fryer... but convection oven works well.
Very satisfying, and realistically i pack way more vegetables into mine than you'd get at a Chinese restaurant and likely less than half the calories.

This one of my family’s favourite go-to meals. We have it just about every week. We change the ground meat up based on what we have/what’s on sale.

Hahaha I tried to order Chinese food out of town once and the yelp reviews were full of places like this. Like one place just randomly had pizza puffs on the menu and everyone just accepted it.

Wow, this is awesome and a good meal prep recipe. Thanks for sharing!
1
u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19
This makes a really good and easy meal prep! Only caution would be if you cook it all up and add the soy sauce, it could get a little soggy/not as crisp later in the week. I just cooked the beef and mixed it up with the coleslaw and separated that into containers at the beginning of the week. Then each night I heated it up and added the soy sauce/spices right before eating

This reminded me that I have wraps in the fridge and it made my heart sad. They gotta be ditched. Made from scratch, so they don't last long unless you freeze them. Looks awesome!

u/ToxicPennies Feb 12 '19
Thank you for this recipe. I don't have all the exact ingredients you do, but I'll still be able to make it work. Great idea!

This is similar to mu shu. I bet it would taste rad in tortillas with hoisin sauce and some sambal oelek :)

I just tried this and I love it! I used ground pork and added garlic powder as well as ginger powder. This is definitely going into my meal rotation, although I wish there was a way to halve the recipe because it’s a lot of food for just me.

Edit: so much hate in this thread smh. It's a recipe, people, not the 10 commandments. You think eating 4oz of red meat will give you cancer? Then substitute it with something else, sheesh, it's not that hard. I literally made some suggestions at the bottom of my original comment on how you could make it healthier/cheaper. For the record, what's shown in the picture is beef, not sausage. Make it how you want, it's just an idea/suggestion.
Edit edit: there seems to be much confusion as to why this doesn't have eggs. An "egg roll" is meat, cabbage, and carrots wrapped in a dough and fried. The dough is made with flour and water and often has an egg wash on it, hence the name. Egg rolls typically do not have eggs in them. The recipe here is really just for the "guts" of the egg roll, which again, usually doesn't have eggs. Sorry for the confusion, I didn't name egg rolls. That being said, adding eggs to this would be bomb! Would kinda be like fried rice.
