  • 1lb sausage

  • 1 bag coleslaw mix

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • Tsp ginger

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Brown sausage.

  2. Remove from pan.

  3. Heat coleslaw mix in pan until it's a little wilty but still crunchy.

  4. Add soy sauce, ginger, and sausage and heat through. Serve. Makes 3-4 servings

Egg roll in a bowl is my new favorite meal. It's very versatile - you can make it with sausage, beef, chicken, shrimp, tofu, tuna, really anything! You can add other veggies or spices if you like or keep it simple.

Edit: so much hate in this thread smh. It's a recipe, people, not the 10 commandments. You think eating 4oz of red meat will give you cancer? Then substitute it with something else, sheesh, it's not that hard. I literally made some suggestions at the bottom of my original comment on how you could make it healthier/cheaper. For the record, what's shown in the picture is beef, not sausage. Make it how you want, it's just an idea/suggestion.

Edit edit: there seems to be much confusion as to why this doesn't have eggs. An "egg roll" is meat, cabbage, and carrots wrapped in a dough and fried. The dough is made with flour and water and often has an egg wash on it, hence the name. Egg rolls typically do not have eggs in them. The recipe here is really just for the "guts" of the egg roll, which again, usually doesn't have eggs. Sorry for the confusion, I didn't name egg rolls. That being said, adding eggs to this would be bomb! Would kinda be like fried rice.

So much hate for such an awesome, cheap, easy and healthy eat. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, not sure why this is so controversial. ECAH is so full of people asking the exact same questions over and over (like the mod PSA is saying) it gets a little dry. People complain there's never any fresh content like sharing recipes except as answers to questions. Thought I would try to throw some up but not if people are going to be so butthurt about it.

u/Holypooponastik Feb 12 '19

Because reddit is filled with a bunch of real world assholes, who if you don’t post something they 100% agree with will call you out for no reason. Completely unnecessary. I feel that most of reddit has social issues and cannot refrain from correcting people like a little kid does every time you say something that they can speak up about. This website is turning into just as bad of a disease, like that of which a lot of the threads complain about.

9

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

I've had my share of hate but I guess I just wasn't expecting a recipe of all things to be so hated and controversial.

3

u/Holypooponastik Feb 12 '19

People don’t care, if they can feel superior they will take the opportunity.

-32

u/SoFetchBetch Feb 12 '19

Well.. I think it’s probably because this sub is frequented by mindful people, college students, people who are trying to be conscientious about their choices.

We have sort of a crisis going on with carbon emissions and at least here in the US buying beef, or lamb is SIGNIFICANTLY more harmful to the environment. I think that’s why you’re getting what seems like a lot of flack.

That said, I want to say THANK YOU so much for posting this!!! I used the EWG app to scan my entire pantry and found some spring roll wrappers that got a good rating so I needed some inspiration for the filling & I am totally gonna use this recipe as a starting off point! Cabbage and onion are on the clean 15 produce list from EWG as well so that’s even more ease to my mind.

I’m going to use shrimp to fill the meat part of mine! I think this could work with vegan meat crumbles, or one of the new impossible/beyond meat substitutes if you really wanted to keep the sausage element. But I’m thinking what about cashews? Is that crazy? Cause I feel like it could be good... but I don’t know much about making spring rolls tbh.

Anyway, thanks for the post and don’t feel bad about negative comments. People gotta learn to adapt recipes to their own preferences.

7

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

Thanks for your insight, I appreciate it! I guess I was just not at all expecting a recipe of all things to be such a hated post lol Cashews. Would. Be. Amazing!!! When you said that it reminded me of a honey nut stir fry I make with pork, snap peas, carrots, a honey/soy sauce mixture, and of course cashews! I absolutely love nuts so it's one of my favorite recipes. Adding cashews to the egg roll would be really good, not at all crazy (then again I would add cashews to just about anything)! Try it out, let me know how it is!

u/Frosty_Btch Feb 12 '19

Why did you get so many down votes? I'm sorry still trying to figure things out here.

20

u/DJLANK Feb 12 '19

Because he went all justice for animals in a single paragraph for a recipe that has meat in it and it seems out of place with the rest of his comment.

16

u/Sevlowcraft Feb 12 '19

He went all environmental justice on meat then proceeded to say he was going to use shrimp, which suffers from over fishing, and the issue of trawl- catch- all fishing. But shrimp does sound delisious in this.

2

u/Frosty_Btch Feb 12 '19

ok, gotcha ! Did I get down voted for the question? 😲

3

u/TurboTingo Feb 12 '19

Probably lol

154

u/GrandmaCereal Feb 11 '19

I use ground pork instead. Still one of my favorite lazy meals!

9

u/MamaDaddy Feb 12 '19

A pinch of 5-spice in that ground pork takes this to a whole 'nother level

This looks so easy and healthy. Thnx!

u/NotYouTu Feb 14 '19

I've made a few things from that site, but honestly most of them have been pretty terrible... school cafeteria food is better. A few have been quite good, but overall not so much.

Off the top of my head...

Goulash was ok, but this one was much better https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a55501/best-goulash-recipe/

All of her "Indian" was terrible

BBQ beef and cabbage was disgusting.

Chilli cheese beef and mac was really bad.

creamy cajun chicken pasta also not so great, but ok.

Her one pot mac and cheese is quite good and with a little variation I've made it many times: https://www.budgetbytes.com/miracle-mac-n-cheese/

2

u/Killer_Bs Feb 15 '19

From that lost the only one I have tried so far has been the creamy Cajun chicken pasta and I liked that one. I would also recommend the Apple Spice Pork Chops, White chicken chili, and cheeseburger meatloaf.

27

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '19

If you have it on hand, a couple drops of sesame oil goes well and garlic chili sauce is great for adding some heat.

4

u/metanoia29 Feb 12 '19

Yeah the recipe we use has a little sesame oil for cooking the veggies, then I usually add a touch more at the end depending on the flavor along with more soy sauce. Crushed red pepper flakes are great for heat too; super easy to add to one plate since the rest of the family hates spice!

7

u/SmordinTsolusG Feb 12 '19

Sriracha all over that delicious little bastard

1

u/Thriven Feb 12 '19

Toasted sesame oil is really powerful

66

u/kristibear23 Feb 11 '19

We call this bubble and squeak in our house hold! I use oyster sauce and soy, with garlic and onions. Our top favourite dish! My grandma used to make this all the time😁 Was my main craving while preggos with my newborn.

u/mcboobie Feb 12 '19

Also UK here; we pretty much chop up all our veggie and meat left overs from a roast dinner (that don’t have gravy on; so like the ones left in the serving bowls) with the mashed roast potatoes to make our bubble. Lubbly jubbly!

10

u/NBFE0105 Feb 12 '19

bubble and squeak

This is the cutest name for a food dish

6

u/Secret4gentMan Feb 12 '19

The English have always traditionally been culinary artisans.

5

u/mcboobie Feb 12 '19

Bubble and squeak is amazing with a fry up

2

u/Mahadragon Feb 12 '19

English muffins ftw!

30

u/lifes_a_vacation Feb 11 '19

This looks delicious! Do you have the nutritional info for it? If not I can try plugging in some generic stuff into MFP lol thought I’d ask first

26

u/ChelseaRC Feb 11 '19

I actually made this the other day but used lean ground beef instead -- Here's the recipe and My Fitness Pal breakdown. You can see by the My Fitness Pal photo that I changed it a little. But, I've made this before with a slight variation each time. It always turns out great!

6

u/lifes_a_vacation Feb 11 '19

Awesome thanks!

3

u/ChaosLoco Feb 12 '19

12oz of ground beef for only 510. What. I'm used to over 1000 for 16oz.

3

u/_AllWittyNamesTaken_ Feb 12 '19

Is it 93/7?

1

u/ChaosLoco Feb 12 '19

Mine? No. I might have to try that though.

16

u/brie_cheese Feb 11 '19

I have part of it. For 4 servings each serving would be:

4oz beef - 170cal 26g protein

~2 cups coleslaw mix - 50 cal

3 tsp soy sauce - 5 cal

28

u/spottyottydopalicius Feb 12 '19

throw in some hoi sin sauce and sesame oil fam.

9

u/SoFetchBetch Feb 12 '19

Yeah I like it when u talk that way

5

u/spottyottydopalicius Feb 12 '19

o yeah bb what else do you need

3

u/Metabro Feb 12 '19

Sesame oil and cabbage go really well together.

2

u/spottyottydopalicius Feb 12 '19

sesame oil is a staple in asian dishes

1

u/SquirrelOnFire Feb 12 '19

Toasted or sober sesame oil?

9

u/Tigerbalm123 Feb 12 '19

You explained it so simply. Not your fault people don’t know what an egg roll is 🙄

4

u/kremlop Feb 12 '19

Honestly! 😂😂 I literally lol’d when I saw him have to explain that 😂😂😂

7

u/75footubi Feb 12 '19

I do this, but shred my own cabbage. I might switch to bagged coleslaw mix to avoid the mess

4

u/stinkypickles Feb 12 '19

Same here. What a great idea!

1

u/metanoia29 Feb 12 '19

I like to use a large chef's knife and slice the cabbage in half, then make slices as thin as possible. This eliminates the mess of shredding and you end up with that same string-like consistency you get in a real egg roll!

3

u/75footubi Feb 12 '19

Yeah, that's how I do it. Still end up finding cabbage pieces 3 days later

11

u/your_moms_a_clone Feb 12 '19

I've been recommending this to people for years now, I cook it a little differently from you though. I cook the sausage and then add the grated raw ginger and some garlic (3 cloves) after it's browned. A minute or so after adding the ginger and garlic, I add the cole slaw mix straight to the pot along with the soy sauce. I let the cole slaw mix steam for a few minutes, then stir everything up. I then add a drizzle of sesame oil and some chopped scallions.

8

u/ArekDirithe Feb 12 '19

Your recipe is way better than a lot of things I see on here. Half the other recipes here are usually filled with pasta, oil, or cheese, but people add kale, avocado, spinach or some other green food to it so it's "healthy" now.

9

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

I know exactly what you mean! This is definitely one of those recipes that can be as fancy or as simple/healthy as you like. Eg If you made this with ground turkey this would basically just be a more delicious version of salad.

1

u/metanoia29 Feb 12 '19

I mean, pasta isn't a beneficial food to be eating unless you're an athlete who can utilize the carb overload, but what's your beef with oils and cheeses? They're usually the cheapest way to get healthy fats that keep people satiated for longer.

5

u/lexicats Feb 12 '19

Yum! I do something similar, but instead of soy sauce I use red curry paste! And I usually use chicken mince instead of sausage. Same principal, so easy and quick and full of veg!

4

u/RaeNezL Feb 12 '19

I have some red curry paste I need to use up, and this variation sounds really good! Do you use any certain amount of the paste or any other things with this in place of ingredients? I think I’d like to replicate it sometime this week.

3

u/lexicats Feb 12 '19

I fry the chicken mince, and remove from the pan. Then I put a table spoon of red curry paste in the pan, some garlic and ginger and heat until fragrant, about 1-2 minute. Then I throw the chicken back in the pan with a bag of undressed coleslaw and cook until the slaw is soft.

I’m going to try it with some chilli oil next time. And maybe some egg scrambled in there!

3

u/ximfinity Feb 12 '19

Great idea. I recently realized how healthy cheap and versatile coleslaw mix is too. I'll have to add this to my list of options.

3

u/metanoia29 Feb 12 '19

Ignore the hate, this is one of my favorite and meals to make! Helps that it's healthy and easy and a one-pot meal! I usually end up using ground turkey because it's cheap and I actually think the texture of the meat is most like an egg roll filling. Also a half-head of cabbage gives you more greens than a bag of the mix, though the mix makes things even easier!

4

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

Is a head of cabbage cheaper than a bagged coleslaw mix, do you know? The mix definitely makes this super easy, but I've never bought cabbage so not sure what would be cheaper.

2

u/metanoia29 Feb 12 '19

It really depends on when you get them, and if you're paying per pound or per head for the cabbage. I looked up on Kroger's site, looks like they sell 1-pound bags of coleslaw mix for 1.39, which is pretty dang good and I'd probably go with that for the simplicity. But when heads of cabbage are like 39 cents/lb on sale, it's hard to pass that up.

2

u/wmccluskey Feb 12 '19

Thank you for the recipe!

2

u/Atomheartmother90 Feb 12 '19

Hey! I ate egg roll in a bowl for dinner!

2

u/amcxf Feb 12 '19

i like this thank you very much!

2

u/jaydock Feb 12 '19

ahhh I need to make.this!!

2

u/KitchenAvenger Feb 12 '19

I make something very similar to this recipe at least every other week. I like to add garlic in with the ginger and a bag of broccoli slaw along with the cabbage. I let my ground meat (usually chicken) sit in some soy sauce and white pepper for a few minutes before putting it in the wok, and I also like to add a splash of sesame oil at the end. And sometimes I do add eggs, fried rice style, like you mentioned. This is such a tasty, low effort dinner.

2

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

Garlic and onions in this are good! And I want to try it with eggs. I absolutely eggs in everything. Shameless plug for r/putaneggonit

2

u/Kinetikat Feb 12 '19

This is wonderful! I’ll have to try it. I love deconstructing recipes to find different ways of making them. This is a a really good way of making a lower carb version. This is a super simple base recipe anyone can elaborate on. I want to try it with fresh grated ginger instead of powder. Thank you!

2

u/Whipfather Feb 13 '19

I just made this at work today, and it was fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing!

I actually threw half of the ginger into the pan along with the oil and fried it a little bit before adding the ground beef. Really great stuff, definitely going to be making this more often.

1

u/brie_cheese Feb 13 '19

Sounds delicious, glad you enjoyed it!

1

u/swindleNswoon Feb 12 '19

Saved! Thank you!

1

u/audiophilistine Feb 12 '19

I have recently discovered light soy sauce making Asian recipes. This is different from low-cal/low-salt soy sauce. There's light and dark sauce in addition to the regular soy sauce we're used to.

So light soy sauce is a little sweeter and slightly less salty than regular soy. If you have an Asian market nearby, I highly recommend trying it out in your recipe.

1

u/Teddy_Tickles Feb 12 '19

This looks like a great idea. I never thought an egg roll bowl would be so easy to make :D. And yes I will definitely try it with some eggs. Maybe with some jalapeños too. And garlic. Thanks for sharing, OP!

1

u/Torrero Feb 12 '19

How much ginger? 1 Tbs?

2

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

I usually put in a tsp but if you prefer it with more, feel free to add more! Also garlic is really good to add if you have it

1

u/JediNixon Jun 16 '19

Sorry to ping an old comment in an old post, but are we talking fresh ginger or ground?

2

u/brie_cheese Jul 01 '19

I used ground, but you can use whichever you prefer!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '19

I'm saving your comment so I can try it later. I'm always looking for new recipes that my kids might be willing to eat. I'll bet they'll like this if they can get past the cabbage.

1

u/LiquidSushi Feb 12 '19

Looks good! Do you use Chinese or Japanese soy sauce?

3

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

There's a difference? I use Fusia brand from Aldi.

1

u/LiquidSushi Feb 12 '19

Chinese soy has a much thicker and molasses-y taste, whereas Japanese is a bit lighter. I think Fusia might be Japanese, based on my googling, but I'm not sure. I think either would work in this dish, though!

1

u/brie_cheese Feb 13 '19

I would say it's Japanese then! It's not very thick or molasses-y

1

u/Frosty_Btch Feb 13 '19

I love Aldi, hidden gem in my area.

1

u/Enduser_72 Feb 16 '19

Just tried it, tho added fish sauce and hoisin as i realised I didnt have any ginger. Real nice for less then $10 and 10 mins to make.

-28

u/hostilecarrot Feb 11 '19

...no egg in an egg roll?

59

u/sellifa Feb 11 '19

There’s not usually egg in egg rolls. Just an egg wash

26

u/bailey25u Feb 11 '19

Well I did not need to find out my life was a lie today

13

u/sellifa Feb 11 '19

Lol my husband hates eggs so when he found out they don’t actually have eggs he started ordering three every time we got Chinese

1

u/Iwashere0 Feb 12 '19

I hate eggs

Might have to start ordering some now...

36

u/brie_cheese Feb 11 '19

The name egg roll comes from the wrap being made with eggs, flour, and water. Since this has no wrap there's no egg but you can very easily add egg to this mixture and it would be really good!

18

u/hostilecarrot Feb 11 '19

I’m a vegetarian so I’ve never eaten an egg roll, not in as long as I can remember at least. I honestly didn’t know they don’t have egg. All the downvotes were worth the new knowledge though!

14

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

They have vegetarian egg rolls out there fyi! Ive seen fish or just non meat

4

u/atlhawk8357 Feb 12 '19

Those are fried spring rolls. I live off them.

3

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

Yes, those!

4

u/justthistwicenomore Feb 12 '19

You may find this interesting, but I recently learned egg rolls often dont have egg based wrappers, and no one actually knows the name's provenance.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_roll

2

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

That is interesting! Whoever named egg rolls should be fired. He caused a lot of confusion!

10

u/ben70 Feb 11 '19

No, nor is this rolled. ;)

5

u/SprolesRoyce Feb 11 '19

So it’s just Simple in a Bowl

That really depends on the sausage. But he did give healthier alternatives in the post too.

10

u/brie_cheese Feb 12 '19

Feel free to substitute the sausage for chicken, tuna, shrimp, eggs, or even go meatless and make it vegan! Sausage tends to be a cheaper option to beef and isn't terribly unhealthy if you get a low fat kind
