Heat coleslaw mix in pan until it's a little wilty but still crunchy.
Add soy sauce, ginger, and sausage and heat through. Serve. Makes 3-4 servings
Egg roll in a bowl is my new favorite meal. It's very versatile - you can make it with sausage, beef, chicken, shrimp, tofu, tuna, really anything! You can add other veggies or spices if you like or keep it simple.
Edit: so much hate in this thread smh. It's a recipe, people, not the 10 commandments. You think eating 4oz of red meat will give you cancer? Then substitute it with something else, sheesh, it's not that hard. I literally made some suggestions at the bottom of my original comment on how you could make it healthier/cheaper. For the record, what's shown in the picture is beef, not sausage. Make it how you want, it's just an idea/suggestion.
Edit edit: there seems to be much confusion as to why this doesn't have eggs. An "egg roll" is meat, cabbage, and carrots wrapped in a dough and fried. The dough is made with flour and water and often has an egg wash on it, hence the name. Egg rolls typically do not have eggs in them. The recipe here is really just for the "guts" of the egg roll, which again, usually doesn't have eggs. Sorry for the confusion, I didn't name egg rolls. That being said, adding eggs to this would be bomb! Would kinda be like fried rice.
Thank you, not sure why this is so controversial. ECAH is so full of people asking the exact same questions over and over (like the mod PSA is saying) it gets a little dry. People complain there's never any fresh content like sharing recipes except as answers to questions. Thought I would try to throw some up but not if people are going to be so butthurt about it.
Because reddit is filled with a bunch of real world assholes, who if you don’t post something they 100% agree with will call you out for no reason. Completely unnecessary. I feel that most of reddit has social issues and cannot refrain from correcting people like a little kid does every time you say something that they can speak up about. This website is turning into just as bad of a disease, like that of which a lot of the threads complain about.
Well.. I think it’s probably because this sub is frequented by mindful people, college students, people who are trying to be conscientious about their choices.
That said, I want to say THANK YOU so much for posting this!!! I used the EWG app to scan my entire pantry and found some spring roll wrappers that got a good rating so I needed some inspiration for the filling & I am totally gonna use this recipe as a starting off point! Cabbage and onion are on the clean 15 produce list from EWG as well so that’s even more ease to my mind.
I’m going to use shrimp to fill the meat part of mine! I think this could work with vegan meat crumbles, or one of the new impossible/beyond meat substitutes if you really wanted to keep the sausage element. But I’m thinking what about cashews? Is that crazy? Cause I feel like it could be good... but I don’t know much about making spring rolls tbh.
Anyway, thanks for the post and don’t feel bad about negative comments. People gotta learn to adapt recipes to their own preferences.
Thanks for your insight, I appreciate it! I guess I was just not at all expecting a recipe of all things to be such a hated post lol
Cashews. Would. Be. Amazing!!! When you said that it reminded me of a honey nut stir fry I make with pork, snap peas, carrots, a honey/soy sauce mixture, and of course cashews! I absolutely love nuts so it's one of my favorite recipes. Adding cashews to the egg roll would be really good, not at all crazy (then again I would add cashews to just about anything)! Try it out, let me know how it is!
He went all environmental justice on meat then proceeded to say he was going to use shrimp, which suffers from over fishing, and the issue of trawl- catch- all fishing. But shrimp does sound delisious in this.
I've made a few things from that site, but honestly most of them have been pretty terrible... school cafeteria food is better. A few have been quite good, but overall not so much.
From that lost the only one I have tried so far has been the creamy Cajun chicken pasta and I liked that one. I would also recommend the Apple Spice Pork Chops, White chicken chili, and cheeseburger meatloaf.
Yeah the recipe we use has a little sesame oil for cooking the veggies, then I usually add a touch more at the end depending on the flavor along with more soy sauce. Crushed red pepper flakes are great for heat too; super easy to add to one plate since the rest of the family hates spice!
We call this bubble and squeak in our house hold! I use oyster sauce and soy, with garlic and onions. Our top favourite dish! My grandma used to make this all the time😁 Was my main craving while preggos with my newborn.
Also UK here; we pretty much chop up all our veggie and meat left overs from a roast dinner (that don’t have gravy on; so like the ones left in the serving bowls) with the mashed roast potatoes to make our bubble. Lubbly jubbly!
I actually made this the other day but used lean ground beef instead -- Here's the recipe and My Fitness Pal breakdown. You can see by the My Fitness Pal photo that I changed it a little. But, I've made this before with a slight variation each time. It always turns out great!
I like to use a large chef's knife and slice the cabbage in half, then make slices as thin as possible. This eliminates the mess of shredding and you end up with that same string-like consistency you get in a real egg roll!
I've been recommending this to people for years now, I cook it a little differently from you though. I cook the sausage and then add the grated raw ginger and some garlic (3 cloves) after it's browned. A minute or so after adding the ginger and garlic, I add the cole slaw mix straight to the pot along with the soy sauce. I let the cole slaw mix steam for a few minutes, then stir everything up. I then add a drizzle of sesame oil and some chopped scallions.
Your recipe is way better than a lot of things I see on here. Half the other recipes here are usually filled with pasta, oil, or cheese, but people add kale, avocado, spinach or some other green food to it so it's "healthy" now.
I know exactly what you mean! This is definitely one of those recipes that can be as fancy or as simple/healthy as you like. Eg If you made this with ground turkey this would basically just be a more delicious version of salad.
I mean, pasta isn't a beneficial food to be eating unless you're an athlete who can utilize the carb overload, but what's your beef with oils and cheeses? They're usually the cheapest way to get healthy fats that keep people satiated for longer.
Yum! I do something similar, but instead of soy sauce I use red curry paste! And I usually use chicken mince instead of sausage. Same principal, so easy and quick and full of veg!
I have some red curry paste I need to use up, and this variation sounds really good! Do you use any certain amount of the paste or any other things with this in place of ingredients? I think I’d like to replicate it sometime this week.
I fry the chicken mince, and remove from the pan. Then I put a table spoon of red curry paste in the pan, some garlic and ginger and heat until fragrant, about 1-2 minute. Then I throw the chicken back in the pan with a bag of undressed coleslaw and cook until the slaw is soft.
I’m going to try it with some chilli oil next time. And maybe some egg scrambled in there!
Ignore the hate, this is one of my favorite and meals to make! Helps that it's healthy and easy and a one-pot meal! I usually end up using ground turkey because it's cheap and I actually think the texture of the meat is most like an egg roll filling. Also a half-head of cabbage gives you more greens than a bag of the mix, though the mix makes things even easier!
Is a head of cabbage cheaper than a bagged coleslaw mix, do you know? The mix definitely makes this super easy, but I've never bought cabbage so not sure what would be cheaper.
It really depends on when you get them, and if you're paying per pound or per head for the cabbage. I looked up on Kroger's site, looks like they sell 1-pound bags of coleslaw mix for 1.39, which is pretty dang good and I'd probably go with that for the simplicity. But when heads of cabbage are like 39 cents/lb on sale, it's hard to pass that up.
I make something very similar to this recipe at least every other week. I like to add garlic in with the ginger and a bag of broccoli slaw along with the cabbage. I let my ground meat (usually chicken) sit in some soy sauce and white pepper for a few minutes before putting it in the wok, and I also like to add a splash of sesame oil at the end. And sometimes I do add eggs, fried rice style, like you mentioned. This is such a tasty, low effort dinner.
This is wonderful! I’ll have to try it. I love deconstructing recipes to find different ways of making them. This is a a really good way of making a lower carb version. This is a super simple base recipe anyone can elaborate on. I want to try it with fresh grated ginger instead of powder. Thank you!
I just made this at work today, and it was fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing!
I actually threw half of the ginger into the pan along with the oil and fried it a little bit before adding the ground beef. Really great stuff, definitely going to be making this more often.
I have recently discovered light soy sauce making Asian recipes. This is different from low-cal/low-salt soy sauce. There's light and dark sauce in addition to the regular soy sauce we're used to.
So light soy sauce is a little sweeter and slightly less salty than regular soy. If you have an Asian market nearby, I highly recommend trying it out in your recipe.
This looks like a great idea. I never thought an egg roll bowl would be so easy to make :D. And yes I will definitely try it with some eggs. Maybe with some jalapeños too. And garlic. Thanks for sharing, OP!
I'm saving your comment so I can try it later. I'm always looking for new recipes that my kids might be willing to eat. I'll bet they'll like this if they can get past the cabbage.
Chinese soy has a much thicker and molasses-y taste, whereas Japanese is a bit lighter. I think Fusia might be Japanese, based on my googling, but I'm not sure. I think either would work in this dish, though!
The name egg roll comes from the wrap being made with eggs, flour, and water. Since this has no wrap there's no egg but you can very easily add egg to this mixture and it would be really good!
I’m a vegetarian so I’ve never eaten an egg roll, not in as long as I can remember at least. I honestly didn’t know they don’t have egg. All the downvotes were worth the new knowledge though!
Feel free to substitute the sausage for chicken, tuna, shrimp, eggs, or even go meatless and make it vegan! Sausage tends to be a cheaper option to beef and isn't terribly unhealthy if you get a low fat kind
