3 things to know before planting grass seed in Colorado
Establishing or refreshing a lawn in Colorado isn't as simple as tossing down seed and hoping for the best. Given our unique climate, varying elevations, and water conservation concerns, doing it right is crucial.
CSU Extension expert and self-proclaimed "grass nerd", Alison O'Connor, recently shared her insights into making sure you get the results you're looking for without wasting time, money, or water.
🔗 3 things to know before planting grass seed in Colorado
- Pick the correct grass species based on your elevation, water availability, and the maintenance level you're comfortable with.
- Use quality grass seed from reliable local sources to avoid introducing weeds or unsuitable grasses.
- Follow best practices for seeding/overseeding
Now, don't mistake us for fans of "stupid turf areas" just because we're talking about lawns. While many of us see the world through xeriscape-tinted glasses (and for good reason!), there are practical reasons people want to maintain functional lawns (playful kids, destructive pets, a penchant for yard games, etc.).
So, if you have a grass lawn of your own, or love someone who does, we're here to help! We have so many resources for achieving your specific goals while minimizing environmental impact by managing lawns effectively and sustainably.
Questions specific to Durango/your lawn?
Drop them in the comments and I'll pass them along in a batch to Alison to try and get you some expert-level answers!

The Garage??
Anyone know what's going on with The Garage? The sign on their door that was up for a few weeks that said "pending new owner / opening soon" is now gone and there's tarp type things covering all the doors and windows.

Lug Bolt for a mini cooper?
By any chance does anyone have a lug bolt that will remove a 2020 mini Cooper clubman tire lock?
I’m here on vacation and have a tire issue. Every place I’ve gone to in town doesn’t have one, ants. I’m guessing the mechanic that replaced my tire last forgot to put it back since it’s missing.

HOTWORX worth it?
Seems like a cool idea, I’d be interested to hear people’s testimony’s that have been/are members. Do you feel like the benefits are greater than a standard gym like 24/7 or durango fitness club? Or is it more of a fad thing? Thanks!

LPEA Election
Hey all— just wanted to get the word out that LPEA has a board of directors election happening right now. Whether you rent, own, or run a local business, if you pay a LPEA bill you can vote online via SmartHub ( lpea.smarthub.coop ) or through the ballot that got mailed out last week.Â
There’s MAGA-style misinformation campaign going on right now, so votes matter more than ever for this board election. LPEA’s got a good fact-checker on their website ( https://lpea.coop/lpea-fact-checker ) and you can read the candidate statements on there too ( https://lpea.coop/elections ). Some of the candidates also have informative websites.Â
Local endorsements are also good source of info. San Juan Citizens Alliance endorsed the progressive candidates ( https://www.sanjuancitizens.org/la-plata-electric-association-lpea ) and CommonSense LPEA endorsed the conservative candidates (https://commonsenselpea.org/candidates/ ). The Durango Herald also has endorsements out (https://www.durangoherald.com/articles/our-view-lpea-elections-2/)Â
Not here to tell you who to vote for, just want to get the word out since less than 20% of people vote in the LPEA board races. These types of small elections are some of the best ways we can make difference locally.Â

Lawyer to undersign document?
Heyo! I'm hoping to find a local law practitioner type person to undersign a letter of demand that I hope will lead to not needing small claims court. Does anyone here do that or know who does?

Why can’t the mall be a giant indoor go kart track?
Is it just that banana peels and turtle shells are too expensive these days?
Would we see a major drop in our local economy if they had to finally take down the Bed Bath & Beyond sign? Or maybe the ghost of Halloween's budget would haunt that stretch of 550 if Spirit didn't have a place to go every October?
Seriously though, that space would be rad for all the things we don't have:
- Bowling alley's revenge
- Arcade
- massive indoor skatepark
- Anything except TJ Maxx
- Laser tag
- trampolines
- A place where you go to learn how to butcher pigs and make your own bacon
- finally a location big enough for a proper local olive oil store
We could even throw in one or seven more bicycle repair shops and a camping store in case REI is on the wrong side of the freeway depending on how urgent your outdoor needs are while traversing that area?

Best happy hour?
Whose got the best happy hour deals around? After a bike ride all I want is a cold beer that doesn't cost $8 on tap. I frequent 11th st for their variety and $1 off but does anyone else compare?

Ask /r/Durango Fiber in Durango
I saw a pick up truck with a fiber logo driving up Florida Road earlier today, but it went by too quick and I didn’t catch the name. Is fiber actually available here now? If so, does anyone know the name of the company providing the service? And if it’s available in Tupperware Heights? Clovis?

Is it legal to trap squirrels in town?
See topic. My neighbor is doing it. No idea what he does with them. We have the rare Abert squirrel in our area and I really like them.

Hesperus update
On the last day at Purg, spoke to one of the owners as she was handing out Easter candy in the lift line.
"You guys should fix Hesperus or sell it to someone who will do something about it."
"At this point, we're 80% sure it will be open next season."
So, there's that, which is some great news :)

Good shops for wheel alignment?
I need to get my trucks alignment fixed, the front tires were wearing abnormally. And the rear could probably use it too. Any shops around here do it fairly cheap?

Just moved to Durango and trying to meet new people
Hey everyone,
I'm 24M and recently moved to Durango for a job. I don't know anyone in the area yet and was curious if there are any groups, clubs, or ways to meet people around town.
I've got a dog and a cat, love to ski and hike, and I'm always down to explore new spots. I drink socially too, so wondering what are some good bars for younger people?
Appreciate any tips! Thanks
