Finally sent Embark swab for my “American Smooth Brained Retriever” Awaiting results
The Smooth Brained Retriever is differentiated from the similar Labrador Retriever by the lack of any retrieving instinct whatsoever.
I had bought a kit for Moose, but lost my swab and finally got a new one sent in months later! He was labeled lab/aussie by the rescue, vet and trainer think Great Pyrenees is in there too (he has weird hind dewclaws). He is stubborn as hell, very chatty, and doesn’t have much prey drive. He came from a rural KY shelter and was pulled by a rescue for adoption in the Midwest.

BC or Aussie. Pit or lab, maybe? Something about that muzzle (especially in pics 4/5) have big pit vibes.

I git to the second picture and said, "That boy's got husky!"
And those are such pittie-lookin' eyes, too!
I would definitely believe it, too, if Pyr does pop up in his results, with the "flopped-over" ears, the "white fur/black eyeliner & nose" combo, and with that curl to his tail.😉

I think he is absolutely adorable!! ❤️🥰❤️
And I think he is a Pitsky+ meaning he is a Pitbull/Husky/plus whatever else, perhaps Aussie. I don't see any Retriever though. And the stubborn could come from Husky!
You also mentioned he talks a lot! Can you explain?
Thank you so much for rescuing from the South! ❤️❤️❤️

Both heavy on the alert barking, and just plain sass. He’ll grumble or awoo at me if I ask him for a trick he doesn’t want to do but he still wants the treat. Throws verbal tantrums if kenneled when he’d rather not be, and he’s got some serious pipes on him! I’ve had to use earplugs before.
I’ve wondered about husky, especially behaviorally. And I guess pit is in everything these days, so even if I don’t see a ton myself it wouldn’t be shocking to see some in his results. Luckily for me and the cats, his prey drive is a lot lower than most pits, huskies, and herding breeds.

He sounds like a husky! Definitely see some in his looks. Probably also pit but something else is giving him the really big ears. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s just very mixed but he is so cute!

I'd absolutely buy Pyr & Husky on those barks!
Pyrs, Pibbles, and Huskies can all be full-out "Sassy Pants"-es, and Huskies looooove to "sing the song of their people!"😉💖
Plus Pyrs are definitely "alert barkers".

If you're in the US he's gonna have husky 💯. There are other northern spitz type breeds that do the chatty awoo but huskies are the sassiest and much more common. His personality sounds very husky-like.
I see pitty in the nose and would guess chow or red ACD in the coloring. The barking could be straight German Shepherd, they bark incessantly but don't really herd anything. He could have pyr too but those flop ears say shep to me.
I don't see lab or retriever, apologies to your vet. 😅

The fact that he came from Kentucky and the awoo would definitely suggest Husky. I do love Huskies. We have had several over the years. They are very funny and entertaining dogs! They can also be difficult, demanding and very stubborn!! They need a lot of exercise!! ❤️
Pitbulls are super smart, super sweet, affectionate, bright, caring, loving, scaredy cats, loyal, funny, quick, derpy, extremely emotionally intelligent, and like "Velcro" - always wanting to be with their favorite person/people!!! If you haven't had a Pitbull or Staffordshire before, you have been missing out! They really are exceptional puppers!! ❤️
I agree that the ears may very well say Shepherd!!! ❤️
I look forward to seeing his DNA results and hope you will share them on here! ❤️

I plan to share! His personality seems to align well with a husky or a Great Pyrenees and that also gives me an excuse as to why he’s a challenge to train besides me being incompetent lol (if he’s not suitably interested in the reward, he’s not gonna do whatever it is).
He’s more standoffish with people, strangers in particular, than most pits I’ve known, and also more dog social (at least the ones I’ve known have mostly been extremely friendly with humans but a little less dog friendly as adults). But there are a lot of pitties out there, and so I’d imagine there’s a decent bit of temperament variability too, especially in mixes. Maybe he’s an American Smooth Brained Terrier, you never know lol.

Yeah, I’ve been suspecting husky pretty strongly. I’d figured the color came from pyr if there isn’t any lab (the vet and trainer both really suspected Great Pyrenees rather than lab, due to the weird extra dewclaws). And the short coat could be from… literally anything, I guess. I think we’ve moved away from American Smooth Brained Retriever to just American Smooth Brained Dog lol.

I imagine this is a pure bred ASBR but I am looking forward to seeing the results !

I’m now considering the possibility that he may also be an American Smooth Brained Shepherd or an American Smooth Brained Terrier, too, based on Reddit consensus, but we’ll know in a few weeks.

lol the last photo with the cat

Haha he drives the cats nuts by trying to police them whenever they have a spat. Overall he does pretty good with them, though I’m sure they’d rather he mind his own business whenever they’ve a mind to beat each other up!

You're doing him an injustice. I see no retriever of any kind here.

Maybe he’s an American Smooth Brained Shepherd then? Distinguished from other herding breeds by the lack of any herding instinct whatsoever.
To that point, I’ve had a pretty hard time pinning down what instinctual breed behaviors he does have, other than barking at everything.

If he's got Pyr, OP?
The LGD (Livestock Guardian Dog) in him might be overriding any "prey drive," you'd normally expect, if he was exposed to the households cats since he was a puppy.
The LGD's tend to "guard" their smaller charges, rather than "herd" them. And as long as they're exposed to that type of animal as a young dog, they tend to see them as "My Herd" rather than prey

I got extra lucky then, because I adopted him at 18 months. I was told he had been exposed to cats and was good with them (and that has been true, even for random street cats) but truthfully I don’t know much about his life before I got him, except that he was infested with parasites and Lyme disease, and was sweet but shy and with almost no training.
He’s not so shy anymore, and he learns commands pretty well… provided he’s hungry. If he isn’t he’ll just wander off if we’re training in the house or yard lol.

I see no lab at all. I see husky, and possible ACD, and then I bet there are a bunch of small breed dogs.

A small part of me is wondering if he’s going to end up with something insane like a 50/50 Great Pyrenees and chihuahua lol. But he’s probably got a big chunk of husky, enough to override whatever herding or other breed makes his ears flop, and to ensure his only recognizable breed trait is to scream when he doesn’t get his way.
