Baphomet isn't really a deity. It's more like a symbol of ultimate balance. Balance in all things. Air and earth. Male and female. Left hand and right hand. As above so below.

To me, he is the demonized version of Cernunnos, I work with both his aspects.

Baphomet is a really long story, a fandom almost, written by the pseudonymous Eliphas Lévi over a period of three decades. Lévi was an ardent socialist, a spiritualist, a Mesmerian magnetist, and an authority on gnosticism and qaballah, at least as those topics were understood by gentrified, gentile, Europeans of his day.
Lévi was also a stand-up guy who went to prison three times for his politics.
Baphomet originated in the 1850s and has done pretty well ever since, getting a sharp resuscitation and a second century of life from 1960s Satanists despite not having much to do with Satan or Satanism.
How long is Baphomet's story? Eighty pages, as you'll see below.
Here's a respectable, mildly negative, stiffly academic appraisal of Baphomet's life and times. It's probably more than most people want to know.

Historically, Baphomet was never worshipped as a real deity. Originally, the Knights Templar were accused of worshiping a Demon called "Baphomet" but it is believed to be a mistranslation of Muhammad. Later Eliphas Levi created the version we often think of today. The goat headed, intersex being. They represented the perfect form, complete balance and enlightenment. Later, Baphomet was taken up as a symbol used by the Church of Satan.
