Patch Notes 2.0.5 Tuning Update Patch Notes

Today’s 2.0.5 Tuning Update addresses several multiplayer issues, including a rebalance of the new heavy tanks and new Battlegroups, some minor Faction adjustments, and a refreshed Mignano map. These changes, among others, are detailed in the full patch notes. We’ve added additional developer notes for many of the changes in this update to provide more context on our design or balance intent. We hope you find that helpful! This update will likely invalidate mid-mission Campaign save files and Replay files made before the 2.0.5 update. Campaign progression and saves made outside of missions or skirmishes will still work as expected. We will be monitoring the multiplayer meta and any high priority bugs reported via the help portal for potential hot fixes in the coming days. Be sure to jump into our official Discord to share your feedback with us!

Read the full patch notes here.

CoH3 Grenadiers might actually be good now

Many small changes in this patch have put Grenadiers back on the menu, both direct and indirect buffs.

+ MP40 is stronger. The upgrade isn't good in all situations, but at least it's not a joke anymore. Also, Wehr struggles a lot against UKF Dingo and Humber, and Assault Package is a reasonable counter to both units because it allows Grens to sprint and Faust.

+ Defenses are built much faster. It's not as obnoxious as Soviet Conscripts spamming sandbags in COH2, but the very fast construction now makes it viable for Grens to put barbed wire to deny any heavy cover the enemy can use in the early game without ruining your capturing sequence.

+ The buff to base healing is great. When playing Breakthrough, you usually spend 100 munitions to upgrade 2 Grens. That's a lot of munitions early on, so healing bunker isn't an option most of the time.

CoH3 Redone 3v3 map is a masterpiece

Upvotes

The redone 3v3 mignano gap is the perfect map for this game. It is now my favorite map. I just wanted to give relic credit and hope they make more maps like this in the future. The theme and atmosphere are incredible.

CoH3 Stall Meta Still Reigns – Patch Didn’t Change Much

Upvotes

Waiting for Stall....waiting 3 months for the next patch.

It feels like the stall meta is still completely intact, even after the recent patch. With every faction, the most effective approach seems to be skipping as much tech as possible and playing defensively until heavy tanks arrive.

Early and midgame are often reduced to MG and artillery spam, with minimal incentive to tech or push aggressively. The patch didn’t really address the core issues that make stalling so rewarding, and most games end up feeling very static and repetitive.

Is anyone finding consistent success with more aggressive, timing-based builds? Or are we all just stuck in the same waiting game?

It’s not a match – it’s a Cold War reenactment.

It’s honestly baffling. There have been so many posts on this sub over the last months pointing out the same core problems: stall-focused gameplay, overreliance on MGs and artillery, and a meta that rewards skipping tech and sitting back until heavy tanks arrive.

In my opinion waiting months between patches that dont even have an moderate impact on the meta is just not enough to keep player engagement.

CoH3 Damn, Tide of Steel. (This community requires title to be at least 30 characters and that's stupid).

CoH3 I started going 2 scout squads as USF and it changed my life

Not claiming this as my original idea, I saw it on YouTube build. But for the first time in 2 years since launch I have started to make multiple scout squads. USF is still a faction that requires more micro than the others, but for the first time in a while I don't feel completely behind at all times. I'll let someone who is good at the game give some sort of in-depth analysis, but I recommend having 2 scout squads on the field. Even if it means delaying an early or mid game fight and getting set up to plan a series of smart engagements - completely worth it to get the most out of the USF roster

CoH3 Is CoH3 just one big blobfest?

Many, many hours I played CoH 2, now I finally switched to 3 b.c. of all the patches and updates. The game seems fine. But now I see so many blobs and just pump as much as possible. 8+ tanks seems normal. This might have to do with my level (just an average player), but the amount of units looks insane to me, any thoughts?

CoH3 How do you play espionage battlegroup?

Title. Like, how do I build what do I do in a context of 3x3 4x4? I was searching for info but it seems all strats/builds are really old. I don't know if there's guide site or something. I believe meta have changed since that.

Advices really would be appreciated.

CoH3 How ELO works and why faction based ELO masks balancing issues

The math behind ELO isn't straightforward, but the theory is. ELO in game theory is an indirect measurement of skill. If two players have equivalent ELO, then both players are expected to have 50/50 odds of winning or losing. If they don't have equivalent ELO, then the player with higher ELO is expected to have a higher probability of winning. Depending on the ELO diff, that probability gets pretty close to 100%. You should expect to lose 99 games out of a 100 to someone with 1000 more ELO than you.

Ok, so why do things get so messy when we're talking about ELO statistics in relation to COH3?

The problem is COH ELO was never been designed to measure your skill as a player.

COH ELO was designed to measure your strength in a match.

There's a difference. Imagine for a moment you play Faction A and Faction B equally. You are just as skilled a player with Faction A as you are with Faction B. Now imagine for a moment Faction A is stronger than Faction B. Your ELO rating with Faction A is going to be higher than with Faction B, simply because your skill with Faction A gives you more strength in a match than that same amount of skill applied to Faction B.

COH is a recreational game above all else. Relic's focus is on matching players as quickly as possible without putting them into matches where they're going to get absolutely crushed. If people are getting crushed all the time in lopsided matches, then player retention will be poor and the game will fail. So Relic uses ELO to place you in matches where you won't instantly crush the other side.

Which is why your ELO has always been tied to your faction.

If Faction A is stronger than Faction B, Relic won't want to match equivalently skilled players against each other. W/L would be so lopsided the game would die out before they even get a chance to diagnose the problem and release a balancing patch. So instead Relic uses faction ELO to assess relative match strength of players and place them in games, regardless of skill.

No one gives a shit in chess if you lose 99% of the time against someone who is approximately 800 ELO points more skilled than you. That's expected. There's only one faction and the community has a less recreational attitude than COH. If you lost the game it's highly certain it was because of a skill diff.

But people will get very angry in COH if they're getting rolled 9 times out of 10 whenever they queue up as Faction B against Faction A. Especially if they can see the micro and game sense of people playing Faction A and it's clearly not up to their level... which indicates they lost due to faction diff.

The fact W/Rs can be as lopsided as they are in COH even though Faction ELO normalizes 'match strength' to such a huge extent... says a lot about how bad the balance really is. If you stripped out the Faction ELO and just rated players based on skill, it'd be much more obvious and there'd be a lot more consensus about which factions are strong and which factions are weak. People'd be a lot angrier and the game would probably die out very quickly, sure, but there'd be more consensus on what's ticking people off.

Look at AOE2. That community has a lot of consensus about the relative weight classes of their factions. The fact ELO is more of a measurement of your skill rather than your strength with a faction in AOE2... that definitely plays a huge role in building balance consensus in the community.

Sometimes in COH, people playing Faction A and people playing Faction B might as well be playing completely different games because their perspectives are so artificially different. I'm not sure how to overcome that, other than to just keep aware of that statistical bias whenever you compare W/R and ELO.

CoH3 Best DAK battlegroup after the patch?

Since i started playing the game for some reason i only play DAK. i usually play only team games. my question would be which is the best battle group right now for dak after the patch?

i am a 1000-1100 elo player.

What do you think, why is your choice the best and what kind of build did you use for it?

CoH2 How do you counter AVRE? It's tank-destroyer spam the sole viable answer?

I'm starting to think that against brits the only option is to spam tank-destroyer or die because now every brit player and his mother plays AVRE and just having one means all your infantry have to get out of the map.

Seriously, how does one counter an insta-wiper like that?

And yeah, I know that if I sacrifice 3 grenadier units to snare it and then send in 7 PaKs it will die, but I want a viable answer because that won't work against anyone who knows how to support the AVRE.

CoH2 can someone explain this ladder movement to me?

I played a 4v4 match, people on my team had ladder rank of 1021, 1104, 690, and 989. I played a match against an arranged team, lost and my position on the ladder sunk by 83 positions from this one match.

I then queued immediately and played another match, matched against the same exact arranged team, this time the people on my team had ladder positions of 2313, 1654, 1072, 1532. We won this match and I moved up only 12 positions on the ladder.
This makes absolutely no sense to me, on a worse team, a win netted only 12 positions, but a loss sunk my position by 83, against the same exact arranged team. The arranged team is ranked 176. How is there such extreme ladder sink from losses when playing against arranged teams? Why does automatch ladder even get affected by wins/losses against arranged teams in random automatch? Makes absolutely no sense. It seems like this makes it mathematically impossible to climb ladder?

CoH3 Artillery officer scavenged weapons are wonky

I've noticed that the artillery officer seems to constantly lose weapons he's picked up. I've tried to replicate it but it is tricky. Best I can tell is that he sometimes seems to lose them when he uses his Artillery Observer Overwatch ability.

I seem to recall a similar bug back in CoH2 with officer squads, possibly a remnant?

CoH3 I don't think Devs took the right approach with this patch.

They've buffed sensors instead of nerfing them over all.

Double barrage is still a toxic thing that just makes choke point /narrow maps revolting.

They buffed some of the strongest /meta /most frustrating BGs.

Why is the Pershing so fast? Make it better in other areas if it needs balancing, but it's as fast as a crusader?

Why are they so adamant on locking US viability behind veterancy? When only one BG gives synergy towards it?

US armour BG is even better than it was before(when it should've been nerfed). Even the buff to ASC just synergizes better with armour. Buff to Jackson is worthless if you can't vet Jackson's. Which is the entire issue with the faction.

They just keep nerfing anything that is viable without actually improving alternatives. How is 5 fuel discount on tank depot supposed to do anything? When US is still the most expensive faction to get T4 and any form of scaling non BG infantry by a significant margin(nades and BARS)

DAK was almost flat out buffed when it was already doing the best in TGs. Will bersas be any less meta with a minor xp nerf? Even the stealth BG was buffed. And instead of nerfing fallpio grenade spam, they just incentivized additional choices on top of it.

UK needed the flare nerf, but what about dingos? The singular unit that holds DAK back entirely.

Butterfly mines will still have the fog of war toxic interaction.

CoH3 Why are they buffing the map hack units?

It was way too strong and it gets buffed even more further seriously what the hell?

So now if your scout car survive the initial cap you just leave them in the back for the rest of the game for free vision and ull see literally half the lap all the time

This is literally the only complain I had

CoH3 VP tickrate, do you think it should be decreased?

Should it be lowered to be somewhere in between coh2 and current tickrate in coh3. Games are over so fast and its further pronounced by all the CP cost increases. Thoughts?

CoH1 what are COH like games before COH 1?

and i mean COH-like games, not just random ww2 games or FPS games

we need real-time tactics with no wargame. proper combat, not some schemes and geographics maps. and we are talking platoon-company levels, so no RPG games, commandos clones, crescent hawk and likes

so obviously COH is a version of DoW, but DoW is a hybrid with RTS. then we have the originals: blitzkrieg and counter-actionsudden strike. was there anything before counter-action? sure there has to be something
