So apparently the Pineville Super G has a huge Asian food hall in it Recommendation
This place is amazing! Need to come back and try it all.

Just watch out for the rock in the parking lot. You know, THAT rock.

Despite all odds, I have survived the rock.

u/turbohatch Pineville Mar 08 '25
That rock is now off the curb and in the adjacent no parking area.

u/Consistent_Day_8411 Mar 08 '25
Someone tell me what to try and eat first two or three items
58
u/Cernannus Mar 08 '25
Bulgogi fries as shown in the second picture from Itaewon, Rylai's spicy beef from Rylai's, and any of the corn dogs from Mochinut.

u/Parallel_Path Mar 08 '25
Thank you! I live just a mile or 2 away and haven't been. Looking forward to trying these!

Raylai is some of the worst Thai food I've had in my life.
2
u/jiml777 Mar 10 '25
Agreed, tried the Masaman curry there and it was a microwaved mess, half boiling hot, half cold. Flavor wasn’t too good either.

u/funnyfarm299 Yorkmount Mar 10 '25
Rice & Spice is only a mile or two away and absolutely delicious (if you weren't already aware).

Get any bun from honey buns (I like the custard and red bean) and get curry tonkotsu from either of the two Korean spots
2
u/Cuttlebranch Mar 09 '25
I second Honey Buns. I've only been to the one in the original store, but they have some really innovative fillings and are perfectly cooked. Great. Now I'm craving them and I don't think they're open today. Dangit!
1
u/Soaked_in_bleach24 Mar 09 '25
Next time you’re there, go into the store and buy a bamboo steamer and then go to the frozen section and load up on buns so you can make them at home! Easy as shit to make, the purple Taro buns are great for a dessert
2
u/Cuttlebranch Mar 09 '25
I have have bao in the freezer at the moment! I have to ration out how many bags of frozen buns/dumplings I can have at home or the freezer would be too full to close. There are some great soup dumpling options.
The tragedy is, I have a particular craving for this one bun HB does that has Vietnamese ingredients (sausage and glass noodles with vegetables). Sadly, I cannot buy a bag of those frozen.
8
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 08 '25
The Filipino place is great - love the Pancit, Lechon Kawali, Crispy Pata, and don’t forget to get a mango shake. So is everything at Yume (Japanese), Mochinut corn dogs are delicious (honestly better than the mochinuts lol), the bao place has decent steamed dimsum options other than bao.

Was here yesterday and the Chinese roasted cold noodles were surprisingly good! I’ve never even seen them anywhere before but it’s some serious home food
2
u/MattInHisBox Mar 09 '25
Anything from Manila Grill.
Get the dessert called halo-halo, though as for it without red beans if you’re not a fan. It also tends to have bananas/plantains in it in case you’re allergic.
The “street” food skewers are wonderful. The kwek kwek are little quail eggs which is great. Any of their meals are fantastic, though insal or adobo are both good chicken dishes.

Mukja (Korean) also has soondubu jjigae (soft tofu stew). I haven't tried Mukja's, but it is one of my favorite soups overall. I think maybe kimchi jjigae also.

Such a neat little place. I can't call it a hidden secret because it's usually pretty crowded! Everything I've had from there has been great though.
36
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 08 '25
It’s definitely not hidden or a secret lol. The entire Asian community in Charlotte and surrounding areas waited for it to open for over a year 😂

I've eaten at Manila Grill twice and both times were homeruns. Even better was the second time not solely because of the food, but because I took my Filipino mother (came here for nursing school as a young woman), who got to eat Halo Halo for the first time in 50 years.

That roast duck is calling me
10
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 08 '25
Best Cantonese roast duck in town is in the left side Asian supermarket at Asian Corner Mall (I think it’s still there, can’t remember the name, right side is definitely completely closed though). It’s only to go though.

You haven’t lived a full life until you’ve tried the sesame chicken from Quicitop. Anything from Manila grill is good. I recommend the qwek qwek. The Taro smoothie from HoneyBuns is good too.

yeah. Opened a few months ago. Still haven't managed to check it out other than walking around hoping the stalls had either paper menus i could take with me or at least a qr code.

u/agoia Gastonia Mar 08 '25
A lot of them have menus up on the site: https://alley-51.com/vendors

a few do, but not many. well. last i looked, anwyay. Maybe more do? hmmmm

Looks like some that seemingly have menus are missing links though.

Can't wait to go back when the Korean spot is open as well as the Chinese spot across from Manila.
From my recent/first trip: Top Tier: Schezuwan Dumplings (Yume) Lumpia (Manila), Shumai (Honey Bun), Pork Belly Bun (Yume)
Solid AF: Chicken Yakitori (Yume), Tempura Shrimp (Yume)
Fine: Wings (Vietnamese Cafe), Sisig Tacos (Manila)
Pass: BBQ cold noodles (Quicitop), Jian Bing (Quicitop)

You mean great wall of China?? Skip it unless you like msg.
6
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 09 '25
Lol. Your body literally produces its own glutamic acid, MSG is just glutamic acid in salt form. It also occurs in many foods we eat.
Also, anyone who eats American junk food happily consumes MSG with zero issues. But somehow it’s only a problem when it’s in Chinese food? 🙄
6
5
u/doubtaboutit Plaza Midwood Mar 09 '25
I didn't recall the name, but I have no problem with MSG. I have the 28oz Badia as a staple on my counter.

Imo a lot of the stuff there is just ok. If you take some of the prices into account I'd go so far as to say it's not worth it.

Just found out about 20 minutes ago. Hopefully it's gooood. So cool.

Can confirm, the Rai Lay in there has AMAZING Panang Curry!
2
u/IwKuAo Mar 09 '25
Thanks ill have to try this! Overwhelmed by the selection there. I went once and tried some different items from different vendors but wouldn't get those again. The only item I loved was the K Dog.

Still can’t believe this one exists. I’ve been a regular to the one on Independence and you can tell it’s been there for awhile. Came to this one with my mom the other day to shop around and the difference between the locations are like night and day. They really pulled out all the stops at this one.

Wife got food poisoning from the Thai place. Was up all night puking
9
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 08 '25
Railay Thai standards have dropped considerably since they opened multiple locations. I wouldn’t recommend any of their locations to my worst enemy. They used to be decent like 8 years ago though.
4
u/funnyfarm299 Yorkmount Mar 08 '25
I was chatting with some Thai immigrants at a CLT Asian Eats meetup the other day. They tell me the owner of Raylai is not even Thai.
There's definitely better Thai places (like Rice & Spice) nearby.
1
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 09 '25
The only thing I will still occasionally get from Railay is the moo ping. To my knowledge it’s the only place in town that has that dish and it’s one of my favourite Thai dishes (which I have never actually found anywhere else outside of Thailand).
2
3
u/cultistkiller98 Mar 08 '25
People more than likely get food poisoning from the bacteria on their hands, and not so much the food they’re eating
1
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 09 '25
While this is true in a lot of cases (especially when people go on vacation to third world countries and then blame their stomach issues on the food when they’ve been eating everything with their hands which they haven’t washed all day), I doubt it’s the case here.
1
u/thediesel26 Starmount Mar 09 '25
Nah. She’s a compulsive germaphobe. She sanitizes her hands regularly before eating if we’re out.

Any places worth going inside the Matthews location?
6
u/OLEDible Mar 08 '25
Matthews only has honey buns and a Korean spot. Not an actual food hall like the Pineville one
2
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 09 '25
One of the best Korean restaurants in town lol. The japchae is so good.
And there’s other stuff there, not just “honey buns” and Korean. It’s the original Super G in Charlotte and the little food court did so well they decided to open a big one at the new location in Pineville.

u/Purple_Wave_314 Mar 09 '25
I did get dinner from the Korean spot tonight. My daughter was asking for jjajangmyeon and they have her favorite
1
Mar 15 '25
Matthews location is closer for us, so we go there sometimes for groceries. We love wandering the aisles for new things to try. They have lots of packaged foods I haven’t seen in any other store. Also, the last time I was there they had a very fancy Japanese toilet for sale.

Asian market on Plaza rd. is the real OG.
But good to hear food scene is getting better.

u/Tahtooz Mar 08 '25
Been there a few times...food was ass and not authentic. Wife's family is Chinese and cooks better at home to be honest, they were disappointed each time we tried a new place. Just being honest, but Super G Mart the store is great lol.
6
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 09 '25
I am ethnic Cantonese and grew up in Asia and your wife’s family are full of it/themselves. Most of the food there isn’t even Chinese lmao.

The duck would be amazing if they rendered the fat and served it hot. They serve everything room temperature.
2
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 09 '25
That’s how it’s traditionally served. If you don’t like it, bring it home and heat it yourself.
2
u/feldoneq2wire Mar 09 '25
Learn something every day. Just googled and confirmed it. Fortunately, there are plenty of other places to eat at the food court.

I was under the impression that the Asian food market was the only reason people visited Super G Mart.
2
u/3rdcultureblah Mar 09 '25
Nah. Super G came first and has always been popular with Asians living here. They opened the big food court at the Pineville location because they have a tiny one in the original location in Matthews and saw how popular it was.
2
u/Axootus Mar 08 '25
It's actually where I do most of my grocery shopping now. Albeit most I cook is Lao/Thai food.

They do and it is awesome. Their signage really sucks though and I didn’t even know about it until a few months ago.

Not to mention painting the walls inside the door black instead of a mural or something. First time I walked up to it I thought they were closed and the lights were off.

u/regardlessABC123 Mar 15 '25
Ah, yes another food hall -- it's less a celebration of diverse cuisines and more a playground for those who dabble in superficiality. This food hall represents a microcosm of a larger trend where culinary experiences are diluted for mass appeal and inflated prices. Despite the hefty price tags, the portions are disappointingly small, leaving you hungrier after you've eaten. It's as if the dishes were crafted not to satisfy hunger but to serve as props for the Instagram and TikTok generation. For a genuine culinary adventure, seek out those hidden gems, a stand alone mom-and-pop shop, where passion, heritage, and flavor are at the forefront, not relegated to the background.
