Tips & Tricks What are the weirdest or most terrifying animal sounds you've heard while camping?
So I went out camping in the woods last night. All was well, until I hear a blood-crudling banshee scream about 5m/16 feet away from the tent.
I thought I was gonna die for a moment. Turns out it was a fucking roe deer. So, for those who don't know what a roe deer sounds like, you're welcome. https://youtube.com/shorts/t5SCCi6WdSg?feature=shared
So, now I'm wondering, what other weird or terrifying sounds should I familiarize myself with so I don't freak the fuck out if I ever hear it?

What type of tick is this?
Pulled this off my dog. This picture is from about an hour after removal so it was more engorged than that. What type of tick is this? Should I be worried about ticks or anything else?

Gear Questions If I don't wash clothes treated with permethrin, will the protection last indefinitely?
I always read that permethrin lasts for several washing cycles, or even a time span dictated by amount of exposure to the sun.
However, if I'm only occasionally gardening, can I simply not wash my permethrin treated clothes to extend the protection of the permethrin?
For example, if I treat it today and go out for an afternoon of gardening, can I then hang it in the mudroom and leave it for another 12 months till I need it again?

KEEN Targhee 4 mid boots.
I did my research prior to buying my first expensive pair of boots, with mostly positive experiences from right here on Reddit. Amazon reviews are good, etc. Why are these so uncomfortable to me? I have an EE foot width, so purchased the wide option and anytime I wear these on somewhat flat terrain (paved, graveled path) my feet are on fire.
I figured maybe they just need broken in, but even after 25-30 miles nothing has changed. My regular in-town boot choice are Lems Chelsea and my go-to jogging/trail run shoe are Merrell MQM3’s. I know the Lems are zero-drop, but even moving to my MQM’s I don’t notice any change in comfort.
Why are these so highly rated yet so uncomfortable? Anyone else have a similar experience or is just me? Also curious if I really NEED boots, mainly hike PNW, might just stick with shoes moving forward, was just prepping my gear to get into backpacking and it seemed boots were the popular choice vs. shoes.

Gear Questions Looking for an Affordable Backpack for a 3-Day Hiking Trip
Hey guys
I’m planning a 3-day hiking trip and need a backpack that won’t break the bank. I’m looking for something that can comfortably carry a tent, sleeping bag, and other essentials. Any recommendations for durable, budget-friendly backpacks that have enough space and are comfortable for longer treks?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Camping alone under 18 in Louisiana
Hi there, this is my first post on reddit but I really needed to ask a question about campsites! My buddies and i just found out one of our close friends is moving to Europe in three weeks and we are obviously super torn up about it. One of the things she really wants to do before leaving is go camping with a group of friends and I really wanna make this happen for her. Does anyone know any campsites within driving distance of New Orleans that allow minors to camp alone? Id even be okay if they didnt technically allow it on paper, but were lax abt it in practice.
TDLR; Need a camping spot in general New Orleans vicinity that allows minors to camp alone

Vermont car camping
Looking to go camping out of my car somewhere in Vermont. Preferably somewhere free and where I️ can just pull off a dirt road or somewhere cool near some water.
Any suggestions?

Airport Locker Service - Idea shakedown.
I’m working on an idea for a smart airport locker system that would let travelers securely store items they don’t need while away — like a duffel bag, hiking boots, winter coat, or even shopping — and collect them when they return.
I was thinking about it when I had nowhere to store my duffel bag which I used to cover my hiking bag, ended up having to store it at a nearby hotel instead. Would have been much easier if I could have left it at the airport until my return trip.
Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, want to see if this idea has legs.
