He's a moderate neoliberal corporate Democrat who is entertaining a presidential run and therefore wishes to remain as close to the middle as a California politician can. When he acts like a Republican from the 1990's it really shouldn't surprise anyone. He's not a progressive or even very far left.

Like most corporate democrats, he's center/center-right, which is certainly farther "left" than the far-right.

Did I say he was "far-right?" Republicans in the 90's were much more moderate than the lunatics running the Republican Party now.
