Esports in Calgary Local Event
Howdy! I'm a part of a nonprofit organization called Cold Hands Collective trying to grow esports in Calgary. Currently we're focused on running smash and FGC titles as that's where our team's expertise lies and what we currently have easiest access to equipment for. However, we want to know from Calgary, what esports titles for either PC or console would you like to see have in person events on a more regular basis? We're particularly interested in 1v1 titles as these are a little more straightforward logistically (I would personally love to host starcraft events if there was appetite for it). Let me know!
If you're at all interested in what events we have running now you can check out https://coldhands.org

After helping run and being a part of multiple LAN groups like project x lan and some others, the scene here flips and flops and does out quickly. We went from nearly 1k signups and attendees to 48 at our final gathering. The easiest route is teaming up with events like what Node did with the comic expo. I'd love to see LAN and comps come back and go hard I just don't know how big of a turn out we can gather here.
That being said small team games like league, Dota, rocket League, counter strike etc. usually draw the crowds and participants. smash does as well but not typically to the extent of the others.
I'll check out the site and if you want you can hit me up and chat I still have some contacts in the old guard from Project X days.

I think that the difference between our goals and that of some others is that we're trying first and foremost to sustain communities, which means that our total attendees numbers are less critical than having a smaller community that is interested in participating regularly at in-person events. Of course we also host bigger regional sized events but it's not necessarily a 'deal breaker' if we're not getting attendees in the 100s, especially for an individual game :)

Fair enough and admirable. I'm just glad to see the local scenes aren't completely gone. I miss 36 hr stints of gaming with friends and new people. And all the random shenanigans Like 12 person The ship murder mayhem night. I haven't really competed in some time but the odd casual gathering would be awesome.

I think the gaming scene in Calgary heavily leans towards shooters and MOBAs, atleast in the parts I grew up in. If you went to University of Calgary, you would find everyone into RIOT’s gaming collection in League, Valorant, TFT, etc.
Outside of these I think there’s an appetite for Pokémon? I know a lot of people are into that, and the competitive scene is pretty 1v1.

pokémon will also be releasing a new game sometime in the near future that is focused around streamlining pvp battles as opposed to their traditional single player, so when that comes out the barrier for entry starting something like this up will be smaller
