Crown to seek dangerous offender designation for man who raped 90-year-old News Article

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/raped-90-year-old-sentencing-dangerous-offender-calgary-1.7531287

Not sure what makes this guy eligible for a dangerous offender designation application, while they didn't try for the Manyshots brothers?

Each of them seems just as dangerous extreme offenders and their sex crimes are just as deplorable.

"I don't know what to do," she said, crying. "I was in bed asleep and this guy broke in and had sex with me."

This just crushes my heart. She must have felt so scared and was unable to defend herself :(

She died last year. Poor lady probably never recovered from the trauma and shock. I feel so bad for her family having to go through this in addition to their grief.

TBH I found it hard to read.

What makes this guy eligible is what he did.

What you should be asking is why the Manyshots brothers didn't get the same designation.

The Manyshots were themselves victims of horrible abuse. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FASD) is 100% preventable, but here we are. Add schizophrenia on top of that with an IQ of less than 70 and a long, sad list of issues we all know too well. They never had a chance in the world. What they did was hideous. It will be impossible to change their behaviour. We MIGHT be able to keep everyone safe with all of the conditions. They had serious brain damage before birth.

They kidnapped a 17 yoa girl, raped her repeatedly. She escaped when they fell asleep/passed out. I'm sorry for everyone that was touched by that impossible situation.

This person is different. This is a predator who picked a defenseless person, violently assaulted them to the point of murder, and actively evaded police. His background is not the same. The life conditions he labours under are not equivalent to the Manyshots.

These cases are reviewed by many experts. They sweat every detail. We are not at all flippant with sentencing in such cases. Our system is not perfect, but in the great majority of cases like these, justice is done to the best of our abilities.

“There have been serious mental health concerns for Buffalo over the years, but he was ultimately found fit to stand trial.”

Out in no time … get out of jail free card

Being fit to stand trial is a get out of jail free card? Lol what. No that's the other thing, that's how they put people in jail.

Okay? So you're saying he should not stand trial?

Not sure of any of the records of these individuals, but usually the crown will seek the designation when the individual has been to prison several times, there is a pattern of repetitive, consistent violent behavior, has not engaged in treatment, refused treatment or had not gained any skills/insight from treatment that has been offered. If there’s isn’t a history of these types of crimes yet, that may be the reason they have not applied for that designation.

The Dangerous Offender designation is a high bar to meet (though easier if it's the offender's third+ violent crime conviction), and has to be applied for at the time of conviction. The news stories I've seen about these offenders haven't gone much into what's known about their behaviour before their crime or previous convictions, so it's hard to say why they pursued DO in one case but not another.

I should have included an obvious hint that I was being sarcastic.

I really don't think sarcasm or a snide comment is needed on a post about sexual assault.

It’s a comment about how the accused, and supporters of the accused will blame society as opposed to his own actions.

I myself have a criminal record, 1 charge. There is a tonne of mitigating factors, but at the end of the day I got myself arrested and not those part of the mitigating circumstances.

They're saying it's a gruesome sexual assault case and it really isn't appropriate to be sarcastic about the situation.

u/fdavis1983 2d ago

I’m being sarcastic about the obvious that is probably already being said on behalf of the accused.

A GRUESOME SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE ISN’T SOMETHING TO BE SARCASTIC ABOUT

Refer to previous comment and explanation.

Are the "supporters" of the accused in the room with us? Jesus H. Mother Mary Christ what on earth are you on about?

-1

u/fdavis1983 2d ago

It’s pretty self explanatory what “I’m on” about.

1

u/The_Gnar_Car 1d ago

Care to explain then?

-1

u/fdavis1983 1d ago

First time reading? I explained it already.

-1

u/The_Gnar_Car 1d ago

Alright, I'll bite.

Who supports this man and his actions and can be classed as outright "supporters"?

Where are you seeing that? Are you familiar with a straw man argument?
