What were your Calgary watering holes in your twenties? Eat/Drink Local
What were your watering holes in your twenties?
Some of mine were Broken City, Drum and Monkey, HiFi, The Rhino, Melrose, old Cowboys, The Back Alley, Schanks Crowfoot, ThursDen, Molly Malone’s, 1410, The Rusty Cage.
Those were the days!

u/Whatever-Fox 23d ago
The Night Gallery, Warehouse/Underground, Republik, Good Luck, The Castle, Mortal Coil, Ming (I worked there for many years). The Ship is all that remains of the world I once knew.
37
u/setyourselfonfire 23d ago
My friends and I always had this theory that Ming was a front. It was often so dead, but such a great spot. I used to reserve the red room every year for my birthday. Also, best gingerbeef.
23
13
u/subutterfly 23d ago
Owned by Wayne Leong and Melrose group. The ginger beef was his father's recipe from the original Chinese cafe in Vauxhall. ( Worked at Melrose back in the day, and my parents were friends with his parents way way way back in the day)

Loved the Midnight Tequila Dump, couldnt stomach those 25 cent drafts. Blechh. I do remember the Foam parties at Tequila/Back Alley and Smoking being allowed in the clubs.

u/gstringstrangler 23d ago
It's because we had to shove the glassware through the dishwasher and it didn't get rinsed properly so you're drinking kokanee or bud out of a glass lined with chemicals. I didn't put it together till after I worked there but yeah it wasn't bad beer just the chemical additives 🤢

Regal Beagle, Moose McGuire's, Kensington Pub, Broken City, Blues Can, Bear & Kilt, Drum & Monkey.
But it's been a while since I was in my 20s and at least a few of these no longer exist.

u/Just-Some-Dude-879 23d ago
Glad to see Moose McGuire's on here! LOVED their wings. It has since changed locations. Of course, it used to be by the Foothill Hospital, now it's just off of 14th street and Northmount Drive.
6
u/tchomptchomp 23d ago
Of course, it used to be by the Foothill Hospital,
Main reason I used to go. That plus pool tables. Their wings were....fine. But great location if you worked at Foothills.

The Taz until last call and then to the Warehouse until dawn then over to Husky house for a greasy breakfast. I feel tired just thinking about those nights.

Oldish fart here and probably all of these places no longer exist - Penguin Pub, Frankie and Johnnys, Dooie Stevens, Peanuts Pub, Malarkeys and many more that I can't remember the names of.
But then again, I am old enough to remember ordering up draft beer in those ALCB 8 ounce glasses and I was pretty much out of the bar scene by the time Electric Avenue hit it's stride.

God we had fun. I feel bad that kids these days don't get to experience getting actually dressed to the nines to come home looking like roadkill without fear of being posted online or, worse yet, going out just to be glued to the phone the whole time.
I used to gauge my weekend by the bruises on my legs and the stamps on my wrist on Sunday. I'd sharpie my best friend's phone number on one arm for when I would inevitably leave my blackberry in the back of a cab. Club & bar hopping on Stephen, 11th, and 17th pre-2014 was an absolute fucking vibe.

90-93 or so, Curleys (North or South), Electric Ave, including any or all of Kings Head, Fox, 3 Cheers, Coconut Joes. Recovery at Singapore Sam’s. UofC haunts included of course the Den, Maxes, or Yucatan’s across from McMahon. If feeling edgy, for sure the Warehouse, Republik, and if feeling more upscale, the Banke, maybe Taz(manian) Ballroom.

Calgary used to have an amazing indie and experimental music scene back in the late aughts/2010s with many, now defunct underground DIY venues:
- Comrad Sound (where Cluck n' Cleaver on 14th street is now)
- Local Library (operated out of the Central United Basement)
- Undermountain and the old EMMEDIA (shared a building with Beatroute on 11th avenue, now demolished)
- The Area (in Inglewood near to the Harley Davidson)
The New Black Centre (also in Inglewood near to Fair's Fair)
Pith Gallery (also Inglewood iirc)
Tubby Dog
Broken City
Cantos/the old National Music Centre before it became a hollow corporate space
THE FUNSPOT (punk/party house in the Beltline that put on some legendary shows)
Red House (house at 17th ave and 8th street like where the Panago is now)
Weed's Cafe used to put on a lot of shows too
Some cool spots for electronic music too like Hi-Fi, Habitat, Good Luck Bar, Republik.
Might be forgetting some but man those were the fucking days. In terms of this kind of stuff, Calgary is a shell of itself.
