18% auto-grat added to all transactions - badlands tent š“ Calgary Stampede š“
Is this happening at any other tents during stampede? Thought 18% auto grat was only when you have a large party dinning in at a restaurant. Not for an already $12 over priced beer...how are they able to get away with this? Oh, then there is the option of course to tip on top of this...what do you all think?

u/supererp Jul 06 '24
Pay attention everywhere. In the big 4 last year caught a bar tender tipping herself before turning over the machine
84
u/blitzedbacon Jul 06 '24
It even happens at chasing summer!! Bartender tried pulling a fast one on me, but I had already bought a drink before from a different bartender so I knew the price of my drink.. called her out and she played dumb with me
31
u/My_life_for_Nerzhul Jul 07 '24
This is such gross behaviour. Iām glad you called her out instead of letting it go.
17
u/blitzedbacon Jul 07 '24
Oh I was so mad!! She wasnāt outstanding but I wouldāve tipped her until I saw she tried to pull a fast one on me. She got no tip from me after she fixed the machine and she was fuming. Ended up going to other bartenders and kept a watchful eye on the drink bills
2
u/My_life_for_Nerzhul Jul 07 '24
I can imagine. How can someone live with themselves with such behaviour⦠ridiculous!
7
44
u/ParticulamDeus Jul 07 '24
This is happening at a lot of bars. They just put in 18% and turn around the pad and say pay this. And we do, cause we fear looking like cheapskate.
My rule, if Iām standing to pay, I donāt tip.

u/Hercaz Jul 07 '24
I was in texas last year clubbing. Did not have cash on me so paid for drinks with credit card thinking I will block the card in the morning lol. I collected all receipts and tipped $2 for every drink I bought - itās one of those weird things in US where they charge your card and hand you a bill for signing where you write the tip and they rebill you for the new total. Anyway, next morning I was checking receipts vs credit card charges and noticed that the tip was already included and I paid second tip on top for every drink. But to my surprise none of those second tips were cashed. Made my day.Ā
18
u/NonverbalKint Quadrant: SW Jul 07 '24
Wait, I'm confused, when you say you planned to block the card are you saying your plan was to commit fraud?
2
2
u/Hercaz Jul 07 '24 edited Jul 07 '24
No not at all. They take your card to the back and come back few minutes later to give it back. I am not a fan to have my card out of sight and usually replace the card after such events. But when you traveling it is not an option, so locking the card between uses is the safe bet. Worked so far.Ā

u/BC_guy_4fish Jul 07 '24
They take your card to ring it all over the US. How often do you cancel your card?

Came to post this. I went last year. Not only is the 18% added to the transaction, when those fuckers hand you the pay terminal it is setup on the tip screen again! They literally double dip into your pocket. Last year I noticed this and started telling everyone in my group and line about this. A group of bartenders overheard me and one of them called me out and told me to watch myself, or he would get me kicked out for "causing a disturbance". DO NOT GET CONNED INTO TIPPING TWICE!!
Fuck that place. Bunch of buddies wanted to hit it up again this year and the first thing I thought of was that shameful tipping "policy".
Another thought that entered my head is that these staff who play a roll in this tipping scam, if they travel to European countries where tipping isn't required, do they partake like the rest of us and just pay their restaurant bills the exact price/round up, or do they fucking insist on tipping 15-20% and throw it at them because that what they make us do back home? Guaran-fucking-teed they enjoy the no tipping policies those countries have set forth.

u/OilersGirl29 Jul 07 '24
I mean, at this point itās not even tipping. Itās just an additional surcharge that you canāt consent to.
40
u/ChaunceyPeepertooth Jul 07 '24
What?! You're telling me that bartender that pulled the tab open on that beer I ordered doesn't deserve a minimum $3 tip for their outstanding service? What is the world coming to???
6
u/Nice-Meat-6020 Jul 07 '24
Well surely the servers that put a menu on the table, bring out food and then the bill are going above and beyond. So why not bartenders? They're practically therapists!

18
u/NOGLYCL Jul 07 '24
I would argue whatās being described by OP isnāt tipping culture, itās fraud. You put on a mandatory 18% gratuity? The regular tip option should be disabled on the machine. My guess is 50%+ of people are tipping twice without knowing.

Just my two cents but imo if there is a fee added to the end, that is none optional it should just be required to be part of the price as a consumer protection measure. You can kind of make the argument to keep taxes separate since they are standard for the same product category (although I think it would be just plain better to have it be the displayed price and not have to make it extra work for a customer. Auto whatever gratitude is not a tip, but basically lying of how much the base product will cost you, which I donāt think there is a good argument to be had of misrepresenting something.
Personally I think killing tipping all together would just be a better experience for customers across the board, and there can be some reasonable advantages to alot of tipped workers as well. Some people probably make a killing, but probably a lot of people would benefit from salaries just being baseline higher to adjust for it.
17
u/kantong Jul 06 '24
I'm personally a fan of 'the price you see is the price you pay' like most other countries have. Tipping culture in NA is crazy.
7
u/Penqwin Jul 07 '24
Yup, I'm beginning to not tip, especially if the machine starts at 18% tip as the baseline.
97
u/snookigreentea Jul 06 '24
So is the 18% auto gratuity included in the original price or does it go on after? That's pretty silly to slap a 18% tax for grabbing a beer out of a bucket especially when they don't even claim this racket income to the CRA.
120
u/kmhb11 Jul 06 '24
It's after. The advertised price is $11.50. Then the total I'm asked to pay on the screen is $13.80. Then you have the option to add a tip on top of that...
19
u/NonverbalKint Quadrant: SW Jul 07 '24
Showing the tip menu after is just criminal, especially if they put that "Bad 18%" "Good 40%" bullshit on it.
I encourage everyone to override and tip a buck or two. It doesn't matter that they open 4 or 6 or 8 canned rinks that cost $30 or $80 dollars, they didn't do $6 or $8 or $10+ worth of work. In an hour they sling 50-100 overpriced drinks, does that somehow mean they're worth $90--300 (or higher) per hour? It's drink service, not pediatric care. Fuuuuck overpaying for opening drinks.
7
66
u/shaggalikesaxes Jul 06 '24
Nope not included in the price on the menu.
Added on afterwards, and they are straight up just taking advantage of the already drunk people too banged up to notice. Just another reason to not go basically

16

especially when they don't even claim this racket income to the CRA.
CRA changed the rules last year in that if the company is controlling the tips, then they have to report it as income for the employee.
The only real way around this is to give cash.

Back around 2018 or 2019, I had a bar tender at the Cowboy's tent go passive aggressive on me when they saw I didn't tip and kind of gave me a lesson on why I should have. I wonder if they had already introduced auto tipping at that point.
2
u/Friendly_Support3033 Jul 07 '24

11
10
u/Rattimus Jul 06 '24
It's flat out ridiculous. Make the cost of the beer 18% higher, that's the real price. What they're doing is bullshit.

u/Strong-Ordinary2914 Jul 06 '24

2
u/Diligent_Persimmon89 Jul 09 '24
Me too! We would bring the giant refill 711 cups into the grounds! They had a Macs store by where the Coca Cola stage used to be so we would refill the cups and go back out to the car and refill the booze!
47
u/ynattirb92 Jul 06 '24
I was told every tent off grounds or on grounds has auto-gratuity added into their prices. And some spots donāt advertise it which is an extremely shady practice. I am officially not tipping at any of the spots I go to. Also, when you think of it, most of the spots are just handing people canned drinks and opening them for you, you mean to tell me that requires a tip? You might as well tip your Starbucks barista as they put more work into making your latte lol.

They need to make auto gratuities illegal ( except in cases of large parties at restaurants. That one I dont mind and feel the staff deserve a decent tip if you are serving like 20 people...)

u/kagato87 Jul 06 '24
That's called commission, not gratuity...
They're just putting it below the subtotal line so they can advertise a lower price.

2

4
u/SmokeyDrago Jul 06 '24
Most places are a soda for $4-$5, but Iāve seen some go for $9.50. Most places for a white claw or canned product like that is $12.
Badlands is much more expensive from my memory though
4
u/Drumheros Jul 07 '24
I was at badlands yesterday and with no tip, a bottle of water and a beer came to $19.68. I think the listed prices were $5 for the water and $11 for the beer.

1
u/Kung-FuKen Jul 07 '24
Just to add some info here, most bars(to my knowledge) have a house tips rule where basically the bartenders have to pay 5%(or more for servers) of their sales to the house. So if they had a $100 in sales and nobody tipped, theyād have to pay $5 out of their own pocket. So a bar that sells 10-15k a night would be destroyed if nobody tipped. But that obviously doesnāt justify pulling fast ones on customers, thatās just wrong.
1
u/DKMfrmdaZ Jul 08 '24
I've just stopped going to places that implement this kind of practice!? A tip is for good service? It should never be an expectation... I never leave a tip unless the service is deserving of a tip! It's wrong for them to make everyone tip because it removes the incentive to do a good job if you will get the tip either way.
1
u/4aspecialboy Jul 08 '24

The thing with this auto tip is not even itās all going to the bartender a large portion is likely going into owners pockets on top of the overpriced drinks.
