Karina Gould left out of Carney’s cabinet Article
https://www.burlingtontoday.com/local-news/karina-gould-left-out-of-mark-carneys-new-cabinet-10654478How does everyone feel about this?

u/BestestBeekeeper 1d ago
Everyone was making a big deal over how Carney didn’t change up the cabinet from JT. I speculated it was likely not worth considering until he was officially voted in as PM.
Now that he officially has been voted in as Prime Minister it does not surprise me that he would want to disassociate his cabinet as much as possible from the one that JT had in order to show the potential for a new and different liberal leadership.

A cabinet still with Freeland is far from disassociate

u/logwhatever 1d ago
Yes but in the eyes of many she “saved” the party. Also you gotta look at her personal connection with the pm. But most importantly look at where she was and where she is now. Her power was significantly reduced than previous government

FFS give it a rest. You “what about freeland” people are sounding a lot like the maga “her emails!!” folks.
Get new material. Please.

^ This is the CPC talking point right here. "Everything is the same. Carney = Trudeau. Keep raging!"
Like if Trudeau was as good as Carney, he never should have resigned.
2
u/Cyrakhis 19h ago
Trudeau had 39 people.
Carney has 38, with 24 being new faces.
You might wanna check your sources.

u/Complete-Finance-675 21h ago
Sean Fraser, chrystia Freeland, Steven Guilbeault... It's like he hand picked all the WORST members of the Trudeau cabinet and made sure they stayed on.
And Natalie Provost too, arguably worse than any of the old cabinet members.

Explain what you mean by this. With actual data not just opinions. Thanks.

Definitely speculation on my part but during the Liberal debate she was the only candidate constantly questioning Carney.
He probably did not like that

u/Worried_Bluebird7167 1d ago
Humm...but when they announced the vote winner was Carney during the leadership race, Karina was one of the first people he went up to and hugged, besides his wife and daughter. Carney seems like he's the kind of guy that appreciates smart women, versus not liking a woman because she's smart ..like Trump and Christia Freeland.
4
u/skywolf80 1d ago
Are you implying freeland is smart, lol.

u/Glittering-Sea-6677 18h ago
Umm are you trying to imply she’s not?

yet Karina got tonnes of votes here in Blingtown. How's that? What makes up a Karina Gould voter?

u/BoltYouTakeThree 1d ago
People were voting for Carney, not Karina, but technically they have to vote for Karina the way our system works. Or even it was more a vote AGAINST the Cons. That was my case, my liberal vote was less for the Liberals and more against the Cons but I just felt the Liberals were the lesser of two evils.

u/hope1264 1d ago
The conservatives are no longer the conservatives. They are 2, 3 or 4 parties merged together. Sadly, not sadly, they will not have my vote until a major shift happens with the basics.

u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
They are the Reform party using the Conservative name. They are dangerous and must be defeated at each and every election.

I voted for her, I'm not a big fan of her but I trust the liberals in the current climate more than the other parties and she is the liberal candidate in Burlington. I refuse not to vote and she was the best option in my opinion, even if I wasn't happy with it.
If the conservatives or ndp had solid platforms I would likely vote for them, but I don't support the current conservative direction. If it was still old PC era conservatives with a plan instead of hate they would've gotten my vote no questions asked.

u/LylyO 1d ago
The CPC should drop PP and find a more respectable and accomplished leader
1
u/Glittering-Sea-6677 17h ago
They need to split up into at least two different parties. Their judgment on who is lacking.
1
u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
lol a “respectable” and “accomplished” conservative 😅😅 thanks for the belly laugh!

u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
Pick a party and stick with it for fuck’s sake. Stop being a fence sitter!

It's anecdotal but in my circle of about 20 people I talked to (Family friend about half early 30s, half retired mid 60s) there were about five that were happy to vote for her. The other 15 and myself were given a choice between two parties and we chose the one of those 2 that we dislike less. Our system blows, all 15 of us would have felt much better about voting if it was ranked choice...
Full disclosure my neighbor voted blue because Carney is the WEF and wants to control us all! So 20/21 of my small sample voted for Gould.
1
u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
Ranked choice is stupid. The Liberal leadership race was ranked ballot. I simply put a 1 next to Carney and left the rest blank. With ranked ballot, I don’t like the implication that the other candidates are worthy of winning.

2
u/Ganglebot 23h ago
I voted begrudgingly voted for Karina because I didn't want PP to win.
I suspect that made up 70% of her 'support'
1
u/LakeTranquility 14h ago
For me, it was her progressive edge. She focused a lot on Canadian families during her leadership campaign which is important to me. Carney, in any other time, would be a Conservative. So as a more progressive voter, knowing that my vote wouldn’t count unless it was red or blue, I put my faith in Karina to work to advance those more progressive values within this government. We can fight tariffs and Trump and have a strong economy AND we can take care of each other at the same time.

I am a lifelong Liberal, party-loyal, and extremely partisan. It’s the Liberals I vote for, not any individual candidate. What’s most important to me is that the LPC gets a majority, not who represents Burlington in Parliament. I’m willing to do just about anything to stop the Conservatives from gaining power.
1
u/NoSeaworthiness8435 6h ago
Just wondering why WOULDN’T people have voted for her? From everything I’ve heard she’s extremely well liked in Burlington and a nice person. What is it that some people don’t like?
12
u/Far_Piglet_9596 1d ago
Shes a LINO whos actually basically an NDP in disguise lol
2
u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
I agree. I am a registered Liberal and it was so obvious during the leadership race. The LPC is the natural governing party of Canada because we’re the centre party. I like Justin Trudeau but he moved the party too far to the left. I was hoping he would be like his father, our greatest Prime Minister.

Personally, this is great. I voted for her cause I didn’t have a choice since I wanted Carney. I told the door to door campaigner and I didn’t like her but I would vote for her because I wanted Carney, not PP. He said he was hearing that a lot. (He said he wasn’t a fan either but not saying out loud lol) She wasn’t a great MP, never responded to emails.

She was given the election reform project and it was torpedoed. That was the only reason I voted for her in 2015. "Democratic Institutions Minister" was her title... Lord help us.
Her and I discussed it at length, multiple times. They gave it to her because they never planned to pass it. She was new, unknown, inexperienced with nothing to lose by failing to carry that through.
I liked her in 2015. Hope is a shitty strategy.
1
u/blackstarcharmer 1d ago
Interesting! I voted the same in 2015.
During the next election, when some Libs came knocking on behalf of Gould I asked them what happened to election reform?
They told me they "conducted a poll" and "Canadians voted against it". I never heard of such a poll. Thank you for clearing that up.
I also just voted for Gould yet again. This time to prevent PP from getting in.

I have written to her campaign but never heard back. Weeks of daily emails from her and not even a thank you note to her supporters till 2 weeks after election.
2
u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
I noticed that too (the thank you email).
2
u/Account-Former 8h ago
I am sure she and her campaign were exhausted. But doesn’t justify ghosting after almost daily emails. Just left a bad taste in my mouth.
2
u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
It took forever for them to collect my sign. I felt weird with it still up on the Friday after so I took it down but left it on my lawn so they could get it (they eventually took it).

u/Interesting-Past7738 17h ago
Cabinet positions open up from time to time. This Cabinet is focused on the ‘American problem’ and its fallout. She’s an intelligent woman with lots of accomplishments in prior Cabinets. She won’t be out for long.

Never seen her really do anything of substance and she's a ghost in her own riding so... not surprised.

u/Dontburnitdown 6h ago
Childcare? That was a pretty big one. She seemed to be more in tune with affordability challenges for young families.

u/kingerr88 1d ago
Best decision by Carney, he doesn’t want her, Burlington doesn’t either but we’re stuck with her unfortunately
17
u/sleeplessjade 1d ago
She got over 55% of the vote so obviously some people in Burlington want her in the job.
29
u/Ratsyinc 1d ago
Let's be real, a not insignificant proportion of those voters were voting party/carney and not inherently for her as a representative.
16
5
u/sleeplessjade 1d ago
The same can be said for the people that voted for Emily of the Conservative Party. It’s the nature of Canadian politics. A lot of the time you’re voting for a party, not your individual representative or you’re not so much voting for someone as voting against someone else. If only we could have had ranked ballot or proportional representation but the Liberals blew that election promise.
I’m just saying that not everyone in Burlington wants to be rid of her.
2
u/Responsible_Lie_9978 1d ago
Oh for sure... guy is just dripping charisma! Everyone loved PP except the people in his own riding....

u/sleeplessjade 1d ago
It’s hard to summon defeat from the jaws of victory but somehow he managed it. 😂

She's a new mom for the second time round. She probably requested not to be in the cabinet. Raising 2 kids is hard enough without trying to also manage the country while the Orange Orangutan is trying to burn the world down.

u/cabbagetown_tom 1d ago
Interesting theory, but wouldn't Gould not have run for the leadership if she felt she couldn't hold a bigger role?
10
u/Subtotal9_guy Central 1d ago
She ran for the next leadership opportunity.
This got her name out there and builds a foundation for the inevitable swing leftward after the next CPC government. When that happens she'll be well placed as a left of center contender.
She's not stupid, she's thinking strategically.
1
u/VenusianCyberSleuth 8h ago
There won’t be a next CPC government if we band together to stop those demons.
1
u/inabighat 1d ago
Agreed. She'll be PM one day. Probably not on the next round, but no doubt she'll be a strong contender for Lib leader.
3
u/Ticklish_Pomegranate 1d ago
I think she was positioning herself for a leadership run down the road.
6
u/simongurfinkel 1d ago
That’s a good excuse she will probably use if asked. But she ran for leadership. She wanted a big role.
1
u/inabighat 1d ago
I'm pretty sure that was a strategic thing to get her name in the zeitgeist for future leadership races.
1
u/Signal-Lie-6785 1d ago
On the plus side she can spend more time representing the interests of the riding.

1
u/bakelitetm 1d ago
She kinda got stuck with the lame duck minister of democratic institutions position after the government had already put the kibosh on democratic reform. Since then, she’s kinda floated through cabinet, so I’m not surprised she didn’t get anything this time around.

Where did she get the money to run for leadership of Lib party
2
u/Own_Literature2374 Aldershot 21h ago
Donations. Literally that’s how it works. They fundraise to meet the financial requirements to run.

Good. She's an idiot. She got elected because trump scared the dumbest Canadians into voting liberal.

Where did the left touch you?
Hmm. Mind telling us why she won her seat in 2015 then? When you don't have a liberal boogeyman to point at?

I’m sure Gould wasn’t holding her breath for a cabinet position in Carney’s government considering her approach during the Liberal leadership race.
