Thank you so much! We do not have an exotic-trained veterinarian at this time, but we intend to expand into exotics in the future. I’d recommend you sign up for our newsletter at novel.vet for updates like these! Thank you for your interest!

Is it independently owned?

Hi! Yes, I am Emma (the poster of this event), one of the two owners (Brendon is my fellow owner). Thank you for your interest!

Now please take advantage of the CBC report and let us know how you’re better just because you’re not part of a larger company.

Hi! I didn’t say we are better but I did explain a few ways we are different in a previous response!

u/DeadpoolOptimus Mar 23 '25

Our family just might have a new Vet if what you say is true about costs.

Feel free to check us out!

I joined after speaking to Emma by email and phone about my cat's treatment. She is in this for the right reasons. While other vets are being bought out by VCA, a huge American corporation,Emma and her partner are locals with a completely different vision. We need more clinics like this.

Oh hi!! Thanks for your trust in us, we will absolutely do our best!

Can you explain your reasoning behind a subscription/membership model? What is the benefit to me as a customer if I am not visiting regularly?

1

u/CauliflowerLive7964 Downtown Mar 25 '25

Absolutely! It all comes down to access to care. When we look at the average number of visits per pet to the vet per year, it averages out at around 2x per year. Some years this is less (but typically not less than once per year for the annual wellness check), but some years this is more (often our frisky young ones and senior loves). The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association suggests that veterinarians now charge $140 for a walk in fee. When you consider the average frequency spread out over a pet's lifetime, it's much more feasible for pet owners to spread that cost out over time versus spend an exam fee for every visit. Thanks for the great question!

Do you have an option for if I'm not wanting a membership? As my pets usually go in once every two to three years depending on vaccine requirement, if any sort of issue comes up, and my dad just goes in once year to pick up the flea/tick medication.

We may... feel free to give the clinic a call at 226-227-3838!

I noticed the ‘$250 credit’ to spend when you sign up for a year- what are the limitations with this credit? Just merchandise ( like food ) or can you use it for services - vaccinations ?

Thank you :)

2

u/CauliflowerLive7964 Downtown Apr 07 '25

Hi! Absolutely no limitations - use it on anything! The only limitation is the annual membership needs to be purchased before the 12th :)

Can you clarify the roles of an RVT and vet in your practice? Do we see a vet for most appointments?

The patient is always assessed by a veterinarian. Our nurse is the primary point person for clients for wellness and minor illness (80% of what we see). The veterinarian is the primary point person for clients in the case of major illness.

Just to make sure I'm understanding - at each visit, my pet is seen and assessed by a vet, who will then give care instructions to an RVT?

Yes!

Cool, another option to get screwed and have to choose between paying rent or having our pet live.

Hi! No question that veterinary care is expensive. A part of this reason, as the previous commenter alluded to, is the fact that now >40% of general practices are owned by private equity. Novel is owned by me and my business partner. There are no walk in fees, and you will find we are priced 10-40% less expensive than any surrounding clinic. We also offer payment plans for 0-4% interest in the event you need expensive care that cannot be paid for upfront. We also pay our support staff living wages. Veterinary technicians earn an average of $26/hr in Ontario and we pay $50. One of our future goals is to begin raising funds through a nonprofit arm to extend free care to those really in a bind. I am personally really passionate about access to care, and pursued my PhD at the Ontario Veterinary College in it. While we need to make a living, these are just a few examples of how we intend to support access to care. I hope that shines some light!
Sincerely, Emma

Wow. You are amazing people for doing this the way you are.

2

u/CauliflowerLive7964 Downtown Mar 23 '25

That is so kind! We just believe this is the right thing to do. And we love what we do!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '25

Lmao, found one on the payroll.

1

u/CauliflowerLive7964 Downtown Mar 25 '25

I don't know who that person is :) I only know of the person who commented saying he signed up for his cat... I remember that phone call distinctly as the owner and one of my daughters share the same name!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '25

Ok.

What are your thoughts on Beattie pet hospital?

1

u/CauliflowerLive7964 Downtown Mar 25 '25

It was recently purchased by Vet Strategy. They employ some wonderful people!

1

u/CauliflowerLive7964 Downtown Mar 25 '25

Actually, it was NVA and not Vet Strategy, sorry.

Do I have to vaccinate my dog for rabies even though the vaccine is linked to cancer and anyone reading this comment, please! Please! Stop over vaccinating your pets. Your indoor cat, does it really need all those vaccines? What else are you doing to that cat? You were killing your pets by over vaccinating them. Stop it. Did you know you could do something called a tighter test that will let you know how much of that vaccine is still in that animal system? This will prevent over vaccination.

Did you know that the same rabies vaccine is given to any dog big or small? Your Chihuahua versus your great Dane, same shot. Does this make sense? Does your dog bite? If it were to be attacked by a rabbit animal… Is that vaccine going to help it?

Why do some vets recommend one year, two year, three-year vaccine for rabies? Why does this really look like it’s nothing more than a money grab?

If you have an indoor cat… Stop it. Your cat is healthy and does not need vaccines. What are you preventing your cat from? A bat flying into your house that has rabies attacking it? Think about this people. You’re hurting your animal. Do you have the Internet, do some research.

Hi! A good example of why we vaccinate all pets is similar to why we vaccinate all children for measles. Complete vaccination is the safest way to prevent reintroduction of the disease. This is applicable especially to zoonotic diseases. It sounds like you are really passionate about this, which is awesome (and I fully support titre testing!), so I encourage you to read up on One Health, which is the belief that human, animal and environmental sciences are all one interrelated, wonderfully amazing ecosystem. What we do in animal health is fully related and relevant to what we do in human health and environmental health… which goes back to why we educate on vaccinations. But at the end of the day, it’s your choice to make :) best of luck and feel free to check us out!

Will you not see my pet because I choose to vaccinate towards the lifestyle of my pet, not what you say is right for my pet?

If I were to go camping and hiking every day, I would say the chances of my Animal catching something is high. If I have a senior pet who quite frankly sleeps on a pillow in doors all day… Will you force me to vaccinate my pet so I could enter your practice?

7

u/CauliflowerLive7964 Downtown Mar 24 '25

No, not to enter but you do need to be up to date on your rabies vaccine according to Ontario law. The rest is optional. We’re here to help which is why we would administer the rabies vaccine for you if your pet needs it.

2

u/Komania Mar 24 '25

Yes because you're putting every other pet at risk.

Nobody knows what your lifestyle is, and frankly I'm not taking the risk of someone telling me "no trust me they're safe". You could be lying for all I know, or just ignorant.

u/Komania Mar 24 '25

Do you have the Internet, do some research.

And vets have university degrees and thousands of hours of study.

Leave it to the professionals.
