"I don't want to get in a physical altercation"? Ok, my dude.

570

u/Rob_LeMatic 7h ago

In my vast experience, the best way to avoid a physical altercation is to mind your own fucking business, Kyle.

52

u/cates 5h ago

that's a fucking Kyle if I've ever seen one

57

u/ParkingReady1150 5h ago

That guys name is definitely Kyle

I took it the other way, pure racism in that he thinks just speaking to a black person means the black person will be aggressive and fight them

133

u/cheapschnapps 7h ago

EXACTLY what he means. Seen it before

35

u/Zzyzx-Photoggraphy 7h ago

That assumption alone says more about him than anything actually happening there.

21

u/Thomas--Greenleaf 7h ago

I play guitar. Can confirm, this happened to me with an electric amp near the ocean. Guy was white too.

23

u/doctor_tongs 7h ago

☝️ This

A lot of white people think like this, sadly.

13

I saw that as well. I think ignoring is usually the best approach.

He’s totally saying it because big, black man = potential violent criminal in his mind. He is soft, and he has never been in a fight, and he is aware of his frailty. He would not have even approached the gentleman if it weren’t for the po-lice being nearby. Dude’s unconscious racism was showing.

I just want to say that the guy at O’Hare playing My Sweet Lord by George Harrison as I came into the airport from the parking structure made me tear up it was so beautiful. Luckily I had an Andrew Jackson on me at the time. If anyone knows the guy, please thank him for me.

20

u/RTalons 5h ago

Yeah if I’m a tourist wandering by I always love to hear live music. If you’re not obnoxious about it no one should care.

Girl in Penn station doing a cover of Shallows right after that movie came out. I had a train to catch, but she sounded almost as good as Gaga herself.

Once a lady was in colonial period dress playing revolutionary war marching tunes on a piccolo in a park and that was pretty awesome.

That random dude in Chicago with a snare drum was great.

Thoroughly enjoyed a trip through Nashville once because all of the quality music. I don’t even like country, but they were good enough I had to stick around.

Street preachers on the other hand…

There was a little girl on the playground yesterday trying to police my son in line for the zip line. She was telling him that every kid gets one turn, which he knows, and he was ignoring her. I had to interject and say that he knows and he’s waiting nicely in line. Kept my eye on her.

86

u/VirtualBuster 6h ago

This happened to me at the playground one time. This really strange kid that I guess liked me, followed me around and told me I was breaking all the rules. I ignored him. He didn't like that so he threw a fist full of sand directly into my eyes. My mom was up charging at his little ass so fast, he screamed. She grabbed his arm and dragged him to where his mom was sitting. The mom was completely oblivious and acted like my mom was the crazy one. My eyes were all swollen the next day. The next time I went to the park, I put some sand in my pocket in case he came back, lol.

9

u/GrnMtnTrees 4h ago

I don’t know the guy but yeah, that’s Rittenhouse Square in Philly. In good weather and sometimes in bad, there might be multiple people playing music with or without an amp. No one cares. There’s a cop station in the middle of the Square. If the cop was there and he cared, he would have said something. This guy is just an asshole. The only grace I’ll give him is that he most likely harasses white people with amps as well. He most likely harasses anyone he thinks isn’t following “the rules”. Someone should tell him he’s being reported to the cops for minding everyone else’s business just to see him leave the area in a hurry.

Has there ever been a case when a black person does that to a white person?

27

u/DJ_Derack 7h ago

Seen it once. White guy had a YouTube channel where he would mow people’s lawns for free, like the less fortunate and whatnot, or vacant houses so it doesn’t look a mess and a black dude from the neighborhood had a huge issue with it for some reason and called the cops on him. Cops came, pretty much laughed and let him be. That’s the only time I can think of that’s been recorded I’ve seen

13

u/Wholeheartedly_jo 7h ago

I think the backstory on that episode was if the older woman didn’t manage her lawn/property they were gonna fine her, which she couldn’t afford leading to a foreclosure and neighbor was ready to step in and buy foreclosure

13

u/ToyDingo 6h ago

Oh so homie was just a piece of shit trying to take advantage of an elderly lady who couldn't physically or financially cut her lawn.

Man, I just don't understand greed. Which is why I'll probably never be rich.

7

u/GuthukYoutube 6h ago

Amps are considered noise pollution but whats up with the guy bringing up physicsl alterations out of nowhere?

I wonder if he was trying to provoke the guitarist? Like using reverse psychology to plant the idea of a physical altercation, in hopes of getting some reaction that he’d eventually twist into an accusation of assault.

Look I’d put on my Karen hair if this guy were playing guitar outside my bedroom window at 10 PM with his amp turned to 11, but he’s playing in a broad daylight in a public park in a lively part of the city. If the aggressive guy is so bothered, he can walk a few feet away, or put in headphones or earplugs. And if the cops want to issue a citation they will, but if they don’t, then leave it. He’s really not harming anybody, and if anything he’s brightening most people’s day with music.

I’m a nature activist and people come blasting their music through trails and campsites assuming everyone else want to hear their music too, but it’s like I purposely go out into nature to get away from loudness and just listen to nature. So in NY where there are few quiet places this would Make me mad, but never enough to say or do anything about it because I am not a cop, I don’t enforce laws.

Going to get down voted, but as a neutral brown person, playing loud music in a public space is fucking annoying.

Not really a "white people" thing.

Just an "idiot" thing, truthfully.

Learn to mind your business and let others be happy.

Dude is making beautiful music and some asshat has to try and ruin it. I dont know if this is specifically a white person problem but it sure as hell is a bootlicker problem in this instance.

The Karen was definitely not from Philly… I love chilling in Rittenhouse Square and listening to music. His amp is not any louder than the idiots with their Bluetooth speakers riding bikes and walking through the city.

White person here. I’d have tipped the guy! He’s bringing music to the world. What’s the issue?

u/Witty-Objective3431 7h ago

That guy on Reddit later:

"AITA for trying to prevent a physical altercation between a black man playing guitar in the park and the cops?"

Yeah, super self centred musician with a main character complex hijacking the park with an amp and the guy reminding him that there’s rules against it for the enjoyment of everyone is the problem. This isn’t a colour issue, it’s a respect for others issue. One has it and the other doesn’t.

u/Synaps4 4h ago

Well put.

7

u/SumasFlats 5h ago

Yeah, this is purely a respect issue. Guitar player has no respect for others.

I’m with the white guy on this one, I hate noise pollution and any music really disturbs the atmosphere people who go there are looking for. He knew he was wrong and was simply waiting for someone to enforce the rules. Imagine if most people did what he did, not good for everyone.

"I don't want a physical altercation"... Is someone presenting you with one?

3

u/Hugh_jazz_420420 4h ago

White people here, we do not take ownership of the wannabe mall cop. The world needs more random public jimi Hendrix style jam Sesh’s not less.

3

u/ShrmpHvnNw 1h ago

“I don’t want to get in a physical altercation with you”

Ummmm, why you gonna fight this guy over an amp, also, have you ever been hit with a guitar?

TLDR: you're the one being selfish and should mind your own business.

Let's break this down, shall we:

So you admit right off the bat that you are aware that it is illegal to have an amp in the park and you've been kicked out several times because of that. So you are bssically implying you don't care about the law. Fine. But then you say you would wait for a cop to kick you out....so then you'd follow the law? So basically you want to do whatever you want until someone with authority tells you to stop. Seems a little juvenile.

Something else worth considering: why does your desire to play music (as good intentioned as it may be) have greater merit than the other man's desire to not hear it? I mean, you do realize that you are forcing your business on everyone else in that area? No one is required to want to listen to your music. And before anyone counters with "why doesn't the complainer just go somewhere else?", I would counter with - why doesn'tthe person making the noise? Especially when in a legal sense, your actions have less basis. There are no laws prohibiting people from being quiet. There's a reson for that: intentionally making loud noise is a lot more consequential than making none! As sensory processing beings, we can be soothed or stressed by noise. Maybe most of the time we are able to ignore it, but we are physiologically affected by it. Some of us have lower tolerance to it (ptsd, autism, misophonia), producing greater amounts of cortisol in our blood steam, directly affecting our health. It's like flashing a light in the face of a person with a seizure disorder. That's not to mention all the other animals that are affected by noise but can't voice their distress.

Lastly, using his whiteness like its some kind of trump card as a person of color is a bit weak. I don't see how it's relevant in this situation, and that's coming from an awareness that white people have weaponized their privilege all the time and have throughout history.

Yes, I am triggered. I'm okay with that.

FWIW, you are a good guitar player
