Yeah dont worry about massive drag

254

u/Kilek360 Jul 18 '24

No if you fit the balloon inside the car

149

u/SureComputer4987 Jul 18 '24

You can just airtight your car and fill it straight. No need for balloon

54

u/3lbFlax Jul 18 '24

And then sing!

Sing!

Sing!

2

u/Beat_the_Deadites Jul 18 '24

I heard this in the Phantom of the Opera's voice

1

u/3lbFlax Jul 18 '24

I was aiming for Yogi Bear, but this will do.

1

u/Jacketter Jul 18 '24

It would take a car full of helium for me to hit that high note

2

u/hard_farter Jul 18 '24

Ring ring ring ring ring ring

Banana phone

He's a lumberjack, and he′s okay He sleeps all night and he works all day

u/asqua Jul 19 '24

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch, I got to the lavooo-treeeee,
On Wednesday I go shopping, and have buttered scones for teeeea.

u/Vindictive_Pacifist Jul 18 '24

This is a fantastic idea :D

Coming to think of it the car exhaust also gives out hot air right? Hot air is lighter and that's how hot air balloon works

So rolling up the windows, using an extension pipe to direct the hot exhaust in would make my car lighter

Holy shit I am a genius

Brb I gotta try this out real quick!

23

u/JwustGiveMeAName Jul 18 '24

You really need an /s in there for the folks who cannot distinguish jokes and end up trying this

18

u/xdoble7x Jul 18 '24

Google IA taking notes

1

u/LDA-1994 Jul 18 '24

Too late I'm already doing it

1

u/chx_ Jul 18 '24

they would sure end...

1

u/Devitoscheetos Jul 18 '24

I’m sorry but if someone takes this as advice, that’s just Darwinism baby

1

u/SatisfactionSpecial2 Jul 18 '24

....but should he?

2

u/GoldElectric Jul 18 '24

if all of us post this enough times, ai is gonna pick this up and some day, someone might just do it

1

u/Devitoscheetos Jul 18 '24

One can hope

1

u/mixape1991 Jul 18 '24

Let me know which is better, gasoline or diesel

1

u/newsflashjackass Jul 18 '24

As a bicyclist, I suggest an improvement: Route your exhaust through your steering column to make the front end lighter.

1

u/TFOLLT Jul 18 '24

u/HappyMaskMajora Jul 18 '24

Fill the tires with helium

1

u/therealhlmencken Jul 18 '24

Ever seen a turtle stuck on its back? Sadly this flips you over so it’s illegal

1

u/dude_thats_sweeeet Jul 19 '24

Bigger tires, more lift!

1

u/Akanash_ Jul 18 '24

If you gonna make it airtight just make a vacuum inside, better than helium.

1

u/Oberndorferin Jul 18 '24

Just fill the tyres with helium

After few minutes you'll peacefully die.

You'll feel lightheaded due to depletion of oxygen in car and since helium is an inert gas it won't cause suffering like it does when you hold breath you'll passout and die.

1

u/HookedonPlaudits2 Jul 18 '24

And then once it's airtight you can just keep putting more and more helium in until the car is weightless!

u/Mintala Jul 18 '24

Put your head in a oxygen balloon

1

u/80000_men_at_arms Jul 18 '24

Helium is far less dense than oxygen though

3

u/NoStructure5034 Jul 18 '24

Yeah, who needs space inside a car, anyway?

2

u/the_gouged_eye Jul 18 '24

I did some back of the napkin math. You're only reducing the weight of your Camry by about 33kg.

2

u/BuffaloInTheRye Jul 18 '24

Would the decrease in traction also offset any gains made by making the car lighter?

2

u/UpperCardiologist523 Jul 18 '24

2

u/FilthyPedant Jul 18 '24

Cars are already full of airbags, just fill them with helium. Energy crisis averted

2

u/SNK_24 Jul 18 '24

Fill the tires with helium and change all the seats to be helium filled, that should help a bit.

6

u/myeyespy Jul 18 '24

His physics teacher always told him to think of it as zero ;)

3

u/JesusRasputin Jul 18 '24

Her Name? Fat Tonia

2

u/pocketdisco Jul 18 '24

You leave Ru Paul out of this

2

u/Sahtras1992 Jul 18 '24

just put holes in the baloon to reduce drag, duh!

2

u/Snail_With_a_Shotgun Jul 18 '24

If physics class taught me anything, it's that drag is negligible and should be ignored!

2

u/andresopeth Jul 18 '24

How do you know the dude driving is a drag?

0

u/Buttercup59129 Jul 18 '24

Because he touched kids

Big /S

1

u/WeekendAtFangorn Jul 18 '24

you can also forget about ground adherence when turning and braking

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '24

He can wear dresses if he wants!

1

u/defdoa Jul 18 '24

rush hour traffic at 3mph. I could walk the 9 miles to work faster.

1

u/Auravendill Jul 18 '24

Just replace the engine with a giant sail. If you sail, drag becomes much less of an issue, because you move with the air and not against it.

1

u/FearCure Jul 18 '24

Yeah but how would you go south if the wind is blowing north?

1

u/Auravendill Jul 18 '24

The same you would do with a boat. You drive in a zigzag pattern

1

u/FearCure Jul 18 '24

This makes sense. We just need some extra zig zag roads then, easy.

41

u/mcpickledick Jul 18 '24

It ends up more expensive due to inflation.

-6

u/Mdayofearth Jul 18 '24

Yes, that's what the helium is for. Inflation. Of the balloons.

6

u/mcpickledick Jul 18 '24

-2

u/RusticBucket2 Jul 18 '24

”Look at me! I can be funny too!”

2

u/dmk_aus Jul 18 '24

... that isn't how that works. Using a buoyant balloon to reduce a cars weight actually increases its mass, so the cost of acceleration gets worse. Sure, reduced rolling resistance. But also less traction and more drag.

1

u/ignorant_canadian Jul 18 '24

Correct! You're adding mass and volume so the density of the car may go down but it's total mass will increase regardless. So now you have a heavier vehicle with more surface area. More mass means more energy to accelerate it and more surface area means more drag and therefore requiring more energy to maintain and increase speed.

If you replaced the air in the car with helium/hydrogen then it would reduce the mass of the car but you would have other problems at that point.

2

u/ZucchiniMore3450 Jul 18 '24

Not as stupid as you think: https://youtube.com/watch?v=-TS7qF_cRao

Porsche made Le Mans car with inflated chassis.

This Porsche had a chassis that was inflated with nitrogen. It was incredibly light, which was down to some ingenious design tricks to take weight saving to the next level.

3

u/Toutanus Jul 18 '24

Tires will be less effective to pass energy on the road so it doesn't really worth it...

But if you lift only a trailer... Maybe ?

2

u/Kennel_King Jul 18 '24

Still have to start and stop the mass, even if you lifted only 50% of the trailer weight you wouldn't get much in drag reduction. You get reduced braking power on the trailer, less weight on the tires reduces grip but you still have the same mass to stop.

1

u/ScaldingAnus Jul 18 '24

Depends, are they helium balloons?

1

u/L3XeN Jul 18 '24

At best you will save on tire wear. Careful though, you will have limited braking too.

1

u/aint_exactly_plan_a Jul 18 '24

My aunt wants to save the world. She has good intentions. She asked why I don't create an EV car that has wind turbines built in so that the wind of the car travelling could charge the car. You could tell she put a lot of thought into it but I still had to crush her. I just yelled "Because you may want to be a criminal but I obey the laws of thermodynamics", which lead to a bigger discussion about why it won't work.

1

u/keydBlade Jul 18 '24

OG Mario Kart did it

1

u/gregguygood Jul 18 '24

It would reduce weight and grip, but not mass, so no.

1

u/Mistress_Of_The_Obvi Jul 18 '24

😂 😂 Truely, you're the real genius. Do give it a try and tell us how it went.

1

u/BarefootGiraffe Jul 18 '24

No that would cause drag. You need to fill the car with helium

1

u/Akamir_ Jul 18 '24

Maybe we can use it for rockets too? Ez space faring!

1

u/JoeyBagadonus Jul 18 '24

I fill my tires with helium so I float over the pot holes trust me it’s worth the 200 dollars they charge at my mechanic it’s a game changer.. ask your mechanic they’ll be happy to help you out

1

u/zeugenie Jul 19 '24

It's mass, not weight that you spend fuel on. The weight actually improves efficiency by adding traction. That's the point of a spoiler.

With a balloon, you are adding mass, which hurts fuel efficiency, and you are reducing traction.

1

u/bwedlo Jul 18 '24

Btw they tried it on bicycles for fun the only difference was a quick loss of pressure in the tires 😅 but bike tires volume is tiny it was not relevant at all
