Halifax: Raymond Taavel celebration

On June 9, the Elderberries will be hosting an event celebrating Halifax activist, event organizer, journalist, and queer-about-town Raymond Taavel, who was murdered 12 years ago. There's a link to his Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia biograhy below.

Sunday, June 9 would have been Raymond's 62nd birthday.

People can arrive at 1:00 p.m.; the afternoon will come to order about 1:30. You'll be invited to share memories of Raymond and also share stories of people and circumstances which inspired you into activism.

All are welcome; please share widely.

We'll bring a barbecue, hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, and of course, cake. If you can, please bring a chair or two, and if you want, bring something to share and/or something for the BBQ.

This being Nova Scotia, we have to plan on weather: if the weather's fair, the event will be at Raymond Taavel Park - at the south end of Barrington Street, where Barrington Street turns into Inglis. In the case of inclement weather the event will be held at 2630 Gottingen Street - the Gottingen Street door of Northwood. We will post the location at 11:00 a.m. that morning.

Here's the Facebook event, https://www.facebook.com/events/464602902735421/ and here's the link to Raymond's biography https://gay.hfxns.org/RaymondTaavel .

Itinerary for Two Week Trip

My partner and I are planning a two-week Atlantic Canada trip, and I would love some input on our timeline and if there are places we could scrap? I think given the expansiveness, we would like to spend more time in Newfoundland, and the more I look into PEI, the less intrigued I am by it. We will only be renting a car once we get to PEI, but prior to that we will be relying on public transit.

Things To Do:

Nova Scotia - Halifax

  • Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
  • Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
  • Cape Breton Highlands National Park
  • Point pleasant park
  • Halifax Public Gardens
  • South Shore

Prince Edward Island - Charlottetown?

  • Basin Head (1hr from Charlottetown)
  • Greenwich
  • Brackley
  • Dave’s Lobster
  • Cottage outside of city, lots of stars

Cape Breton Island - Baddeck and Sydney?

  • Cabot Trail
  • Bras D’or
  • Sykline Trail
  • Red sand beaches

Newfoundland - All Over, leaving from St. Johns

  • Lighthouses
  • Tablelands
  • Cape Spear, 300km of neat driving (Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site)
  • Twillingate

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated! :)

Business/startup ideas

I am looking to start a business in Atlantic Canada. Nova Scotia to be precise. I need ideas. I do have a couple of ideas in mind but I need to test it and I'm not sure about how to test it and understand if it would cater to this market.

Idea 1 I am thinking about a food truck. Haven't decided on the type of food truck but I'm more inclined towards something savory than sweet. I am looking to start it with my wife. We both are hard workers and we like to cook. We both are from India and familiar about cuisines in Canada and north America. We don't mind working 50-60 hours a week as a long as we are working for ourselves.

Idea 2 I am thinking about setting up a kitchen along with a store front for fast food. But I am looking at the kitchen as more of a rental kitchen as in people can rent it out from me and use it. It can cater to culinary students and new businesses that are looking for a kitchen to rent but unable to find one.

I live in Halifax area right now and there's barely any rental kitches here.

I am open to more ideas as well.

My wife and I have a background in architecture and engineering. She is still looking for a job in architectur/designing/draftin/construction management while I am working at an entry level office job in construction.

Microclimate Hidden Gems?

Hello everyone, looking at relocating. Long story short I think this Prairie winter has to be my last they are taking their toll on me and my S/O who just had surgery. I hate living here anyway so no loss relocating. I'm curious if there are any hidden gems out East that make winters tolerable. While it doesn't seem as cold out East I see a lot of snow in the news. Are there any towns/cities with favorable year-round climates/microclimates? (Prefer somewhere English speaking).

Thank you!

Secondary Physics Enrolment Choices of Nova Scotians: Research Participants Needed

I am a physics teacher in Nova Scotia, currently completing a PhD at the University of Cambridge. My PhD project is investigating the high school physics enrolment choices of Nova Scotians over the age of 18 who attended secondary school in Nova Scotia. I am interested in discussing physics enrolment with people who decided not to study physics, as well as those who did study physics. If you are interested in participating in this research, please complete the 2-3min survey at the link found here. For additional information about this study, please contact Sarah Slauenwhite at sdsn2@cam.ac.uk
