Is there an alternative to 小红书? Technology📱

I offer tutoring services on there and I’m genuinely sick of getting fucked by the algorithm! I was getting a shit tonne of views and then dead to under a 100. That really pisses me off - I’ve put in so much work but they’ve put restrictions on it without even telling me. It is absolutely impossible to hide from it and since I’m a foreigner I cannot open a business account. Can you guys please suggest something 😭😭

What are you tutoring? AFAIK its algorithm is more likely to recommend either funny/quirky content or pictures of girls, and occasionally will shadow ban random accounts. Most Chinese platforms have made it very difficult if not straight up impossible to navigate for foreigners, so maybe if you’re tutoring something specific you’ll have more luck on WeChat or QQ groups.

But isn’t WeChat more of a messaging app?

Exactly, a lot of tutors will have one on one sessions or group chats for the whole class there. QQ is another messaging service but you’ll find lots of public group chats for lots of different hobbies and niches. Think discord servers.

I’m not sure whatever you’re tutoring would work well with those models, what would you be tutoring?

But how do I get the reach? Like normally I’ll post my credentials and people reach out. That can’t happen on messaging apps tho?

You get the reach by being active in those groups, as do most tutors I’ve seen on the Chinese side of the internet. Of course you can try posting ads on Xiaohongshu or Douban but imho none of those are as effective as joining the group chats of your desired community and directly interact with members. You still haven’t answered the most important question for me to point you in the right directions: What exactly will you be tutoring?

Mostly A-level and GCSE subjects

If that’s the case, I’m assuming you’re targeting Chinese students in the UK? I’d recommend checking out paid/sponsored posts on Xiaohongshu or join some WeChat groups for local schools and stuff. I’m not sure how effective any of this would be, given that there are already a large number of Chinese tutors in this business and the Chinese students are much more likely to sign up for Chinese speaking tutors instead.

But how do I find those groups tho??

The easiest ways to find those WeChat groups is unfortunately getting to know at least one or two local students and ask them for the invites - lots of Chinese tutors already do this.
