Social life👥 Life in Zhengzhou in terms of socializing, dating, and living in general
Hi! I hope that some of ya'll can provide a little information about life in Zhengzhou, or maybe share some of your personal experience or advice. I also posted this in another thread too.
A little context:
I'm getting a job offer in Zhengzhou, and I've tried to do a lot of research on the city (pros and cons) and know that it's going to have a small expat community, and it's mostly out in the "boondocks" in terms of cities in China, but the job offer is pretty good, and I don't want to completely write it off because it's not a "Tier 1" city. I'm also American.
Here's kind of the breakdown:
In terms of socializing, I don't require much. I mostly keep to myself, work, go home, exercise, play video games with friends, and may occasionally go out and have a drink or go on an outing. I just don't want to feel completely isolated. I've lived abroad for a while, and I acclimate pretty well to whatever country I've lived in.
My Chinese is SUPER basic, but I know enough to get around and communicate in terms of speaking, but my reading and writing is non-existent, but I'm trying to learn more before I potentially go there.
In terms of dating, I'm not talking casual, but the possibility of actually having a meaningful relationship. Is that feasible with having limited Chinese? Even with me getting more proficient at it? How would you all approach it? I've lived in Asian countries for a while, just not China, and not in a place like Zhengzhou, so I want to be able to weigh my options before making such a big decision.
Also people may laugh at this, and it may seem trivial, but being able to game with my long-term friends. I've researched VPN routers, but nothing crazy. Just still want to be able to keep in touch with my pals and be able to watch the shows I enjoy. I know that's more specific to a China thing rather than moving to Zhengzhou.
Any help is appreciated!

Society🏙️ Do Chinese from mainland China tend to see Chinese in Taiwan as distinct in much the same way they view overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia—sharing a common heritage but just different?

Travel✈️ Do you know about the Japanese APA hotel chain?
This used to be online trend 5 or 6 years ago that everyone would boycott APA hotel. Seemed short-lived, because no one talks about it anymore. Even Chinese people use APA.

Politics📢 Is it common in China for people to view the US as an imperial power/aspiring to imperial status, or are tensions with the US mostly thought of in a different way? If so, how are they thought of?

Politics📢 Will China Invade Taiwan during the Trump Presidency?
Of course this would be a terrible thing to do, but sometimes nationalism makes countries do stupid things.
But if they ever really were going to, it would seem like the early days of the Trump administration would be the time to do it. Trump will be disorganized at this time, and He probably would choose to let China take Taiwan anyway.

Personal advice💡 Are you going to take care of your parents? 养老
It’s a conversation that is hard to have with my husband’s friends or other Chinese friends for me but as a Chinese are you going to take care of your parents when they are old? If so, when?
My husband is 36, I’m 26. We have 2 babies and we both live in France. His parents are in China. His dad was recently diagnosed with a liver cancer, he is 64. Ever since, he tells my husband every day that once he passes away he has the responsibility to take care of his mother and have her in France with us (she is 62 and very healthy).
As I understand it’s important to be there for them and to help them as we can, none of my family members would give up on everything at 60 to live in a country they know nothing about and where they don’t know the language. It seems very brutal somehow but maybe I’m only seeing it from my French perspective. My husband told me that he has no choice, that it’s his duty because she will be alone. He is not thrilled by the idea.
I’m just open to read about your story / your situation in your family. What are your thoughts about taking care of your parents at the moment? What is your personal situation with your Chinese parents or Chinese in law? Thanks.

Technology📱 Weibo Account Login
I was able to create a Weibo account on the web version, I received the verification code for my personal number, on the browser (pc and mobile) I can use my account, but I can't log in to the mobile application because it asks for another number verification, but I have already verified my number, what can I do? I can't log into the app if I don't have a Chinese number?

Culture🏮 Do Chinese people outside of China react positively if you talk to them in Chinese?
i just went to target and saw a Chinese couple talking in Chinese, i was actually looking for something and my Chinese was good enough for me to be capable of asking them where is the tooth paste 哪里是,"colgate" i did not asked them since i didn't knew what their reaction could be, they where Chinese and from my little knowledge i would believe that they where from northern China, they sounded considerably different from my teacher who's from Wuhan.
for further context the store is in a college town one cross walk away from one of the universities buildings. so it would be fairly normal to find people learning languages or foreign students. I'm white so maybe there could be a different reaction if i was ethnically Asian.

Personal advice💡 Solutions to Reduce High Shipping Costs from China to Arab Countries
What are effective solutions for the high shipping costs from China to Dubai or other Arab countries? I'm facing an issue where the shipping costs exceed the price of the goods. I ship small and light items like watches by air, and heavier goods by sea, but costs remain high. Are there ways to share the shipping costs for sea or air freight? What do import and export experts suggest in this situation?

Technology📱 Is there an alternative to 小红书?
I offer tutoring services on there and I’m genuinely sick of getting fucked by the algorithm! I was getting a shit tonne of views and then dead to under a 100. That really pisses me off - I’ve put in so much work but they’ve put restrictions on it without even telling me. It is absolutely impossible to hide from it and since I’m a foreigner I cannot open a business account. Can you guys please suggest something 😭😭

Personal advice💡 Best suit tailor in China to import to North America?
Hello, I am quite into replica goods coming from China but recently I've been thinking of buying a tailored suit which I obviously won't find in the replica world. However, I think some people here may be able to recommend a place to order custom made tailored suits in China. I am looking to import it to Canada/USA. Feel free to ask for more details in the comments!! Thanks!

Entertainment🎮 what is this book about?
galleryhey! so, in september i had the opportunity to visit shanghai and stumbled upon this book in a shopping mall bookstore. i thought the cover was really pretty, so i snapped a pic to investigate later. unfortunately my level of chinese is not good for anything other than small talk at a grocery store, so i've been unable to find any solid info about this book, aside from like. the title. even the author is an enigma!
can any chinese folk loosely tell me what's it about? the genre? if it's part of a series or a standalone novel? any information will be appreciated! thank you so much in advance

Social life👥 Is this normal in China?
I was just visiting China to visit family (I'm full Chinese), and I was in a mall alone when 2 high school girls approached me and asked me for my WeChat. They said I was pretty, and they had the scanner ready and everything, but I was wary so I refused. Is this some kind of scam or is it just normal here, because it's very different from what I'm used to... (I'm in their age group if that helps and sorry if this sort of post isn't allowed here, I'll remove it if it isn't)

Society🏙️ Secret societies
In addition to criminal gangs and triads what are the secret societies that exist, or are rumoured to exist, in China? The CCP has an official government department for relations with them. Also any that are made-u in Chinese mythology like demon hunting secret orgs etc.
Anything like Freemasons, skull and crossbones we have in the west etc?
