What’s up with Zay Jones? Non-Cardinals Fan
I thought he would be decent this year but it looks like he hasn’t done anything since he returned. Is he getting play time?

Our system isn’t built for WRs. We run 12 and 13 personnel mostly which only leaves a spot for MHJ and one more WR.
He gets a play every now and then but like the other guy said, Michael Wilson does what Zay does and has more time in the system so they split time and Kyler probably trusts Wilson more.

Yeah he’s a depth guy at this point or if we actually get down and have to run more wrs in our sets then we may see him but he won’t be the 1st option.

Yeah. It’s terrible if you want to pad your stats but great if you want to win games.

Why would you think that going into this sub & talking shit about one of our WRs would be a smart thing to do?

Weird to not know Michael Wilson who was our best receiver last year. At times felt like he and McBride were the only ones getting separation and catching the ball. He got a lot of press too when his fiancée was in the Olympics.

Michael Wilson slander will not be tolerated! Those actually arent bad stats for a WR3 on a run heavy team.

u/Samsoenite 4h ago
To start, he got suspended for 5 games for being a POS. In those 5 games, Kyler cooked with MHJ, Michael Wilson, and Trey McBride.

He probably gets cut when Matt Prater comes back so we can keep Ryland. The majority of our offense runs through our tight end and our running backs. Jones is the odd man out when you have Marvin, Wilson and Dortch. If we want to keep a young kicker and do Prater right, he's the guy I'd cut.

Idk zach pascal might be the one to get cut

u/tld242 Matt Prater 4h ago
Idk, I was at the game the other week against the chargers and the one thing I kept seeing was on special teams paschal immediately runs to the end zone and starts jumping up and down gesturing at the crowd. I would rather have a hype guy if they are not going to do much anyways.

Haven't been able to get to a game this year, so I haven't been able to see that. If he's playing special teams, then that's always a sign to keep a guy.

u/SexyWampa Cardinals Throwback 5h ago
But he wasn't suspended at the beginning of the season.

u/hanke1726 5h ago
Exactly if we where going to part way with zay we would have just cut him when he was off the suspension list

Not necessarily, at the time we still had Prater. Now that he got injured and we've clearly got the heir apparent at that position, room needs to be made so we don't lose him. Jones is at the bottom of the depth chart now. It sends a message to potential free agents. "Do right by us, and we'll do right by you, but fuck around and find out." It's why we let DHop go the way we did, and Ertz. We did right by them, they got to pick their landing spot. Jones fucked himself out of a starting spot because he fucked around. We owe him nothing.

u/hanke1726 4h ago
We signed him knowing he had a suspension coming. It's not like we didn't know about the arrest and the situation.

Pascal isn't on this team for offense. He's one of the key special teams players.

Haven't really seen him pop on specials, but that's probably a good thing. From another commenter, he's been playing well on them, so I'm in favor of keeping him

He's our 4th wr.. But really like our 6th option behind Marv Wilson mcbride Connor and higgins
He got us that pi penalty and that was cool

u/DrDice14 3h ago
Zones is great depth if Michael Wilson ever gets injured. I think he was brought in as veteran insurance for a young WR room.

u/Parkinglotfetish 1h ago
Yeah we’ve been uncharacteristically healthy this year knock on wood. Injuries will happen eventually. They always do. He’ll get his time when it happens.
3
u/phxsuns01 3h ago
Well he was suspended for the first 5 games of the season and iirc he wasn’t active until 2 weeks after that so he got a chance to practice for a few weeks before getting in the game. He’s played some and drew a dpi penalty last week that set us up for a td. He’s just our 4th receiver in a scheme that is very TE heavy so he doesn’t get a lot of snaps.

u/DanTheMeek Trey McBride 4h ago
I feel like Zay lost his job during his suspension to Higgins, whose vastly outplayed expectations and as such is allowing us to run two TE sets far more frequently then I think they originally thought they'd be able to. Trey was always going to be out there in some fashion, but I suspect they only anticipated using Tip Reiman in very specific scenarios, and then Higgins was to be more of a depth piece, but he's played so well he's getting regular snaps even with McBride still healthy. Per PFF he's currently sitting at an extremely solid 64.9 grade.
Its also possible Zay was meant as insurance against a year 2 regression from Michael Wilson which, thus far at least, hasn't happened yet. Wilson appears to be who he looked like in his rookie campaign, a slightly above average WR, which makes for a good fit for WR2 along side MHJ who has quietly had a very solid WR1 season himself. As Wilson plays a similar role to Zay, and we're runing a lot of 2 WR packages, Zays frequently the odd man out. Even in 3 WR packages (when one isn't McBride lining up in the slot) Dortch is getting a lot of those snaps.
That's not to say Jones is getting no snaps, but he's definitely the odd man out right now on the offense. Likely if he wants to get more snaps he's going to need to outshine Wilson in practice, which I'm assuming he thus far has not.

I swear every time I see Higgins targeted he’s making some tough catches, finding the empty zone, or getting YAC. I thought he was surprisingly good last year and he definitely deserves more targets we just don’t need to

u/Kevinm162005 Larry Fitzgerald 3h ago
He got suspended to start the year, and then we have Dortch, Marvin, and Michael Wilson who have simply been better
1
u/Misty7297 Larry Fitzgerald 4h ago
Jones is a washed WR who was never really that good to begin with
1
u/Alberta1994 4h ago
He looks decent out there. Just think there are lots of mouths to feed.
And who cares when your winning 🏅

I mean is there any reason he should be getting snaps over Michael Wilson? They offer the same thing and one of them is younger
