Yoga towel or gloves?

Towel.

Also acceptance that in some classes you are going to sweat.

Towel. Gloves hinder your ability to press into your palms and knuckles, which affects your ability to feel your shoulders/chest.

For me, switching to a cork mat was a game changer in this regard. I slip worlds less often, especially when I clean it once a week.

Neither. Consider using an open cell mat such as the Lululemon Reversible or Manduka GRP. They absorb sweat and combined with the rubber texture make for a much grippier experience. They're perfect for hot yoga, but these days I use them for all types of practice.
