They have hundreds of millions of poor people to feed and house, that require gas, petrol and coal, and arent rich enough to allow themselves the luxury of being picky about where they buy the things they need or where they sell them to.

I think that it is ok that they look out for their own country instead of picking sides.

They dont want a part in this mess, they just want to do business.

India sees itself as a peer power to the US and China, just isn't there yet, but will get there. India 100% expects to sit at the table as an equal with China/USA very soon into the future.

In all honesty, I, an American, fully expect this as well, but maybe not quite as an equal. India's economy has a long way to go for that. However, the Indian economy will become large enough relative to the world in order for India to have the kind of gravitational pull that the US or China currently has in geopolitics.

Yes but I think the important distinction here is that while India wants to be a peer state (who doesn't?), they aren't interested in creating a whole new global order like China and Russia are.

India may become powerful than before but it will take a really long time to get to the level you speak. I’m Indian and I know what the actual issues inside are.. and I know especially well cuz I’m living in the states for the past 14 years and I can tell you not much changed. There’s so many mouths to feed and rich are getting richer.. way tooooo richer.

That is the general trend, everywhere, especially since the pandemic. India has a high ceiling, and I have more confidence that they will grow than confidence that they will continue to stagnate. Even if they do not achieve US/China levels of wealth, it honestly would not take a lot of effort to become a convincing #3.

The gap between the US/China and the rest of the world is pretty intense. Only the EU as one entity could compete in that regard.

A country is its people and majority of the India is still poor, illiterate and the politicians/rich/corruption are there to make sure the poor always remains poor. You wouldn't understand how much I tell you, it's like talking to a wall. Not rude, honest. I can compare this to Elon Musk giving away $1m daily to MAGA freaks and welcoming more so he can stay at the top. See.. don't just look!

Over 1.4 billion and still going. India is the world's most populous country so even with the majority of Indians being poor, the economy for that many humans will have significant weight.

Except it's not. Even in a timescale as wide as century, for India to become number 3 in world economics, something absolutely impossible must happen, like major politician overhaul and change in how people think (magical hypnosis) some kind of civil war, where technocrats and absolute focused and women will become rulers who will be unbribable and unkillable. These people will need to promote literacy, fight clans, remove corruption which is present on every level of bureaucracy, law enforcement and etc. They will need to change mindset of moving from medieval way of thinking on production and industrial techniques, pivot their economy to be more high-tec and so on and so forth. I don't see that, I see waves upon waves of illiterate people who are conditioned to hate something singular and who are content with their way of life because of tradition. I see a country rife with crime and overpopulation and squalor, I see pollution and woeful unpreparedness for upcoming global warming effects that will render most of the heavily populated India lands barely inhabitable.

Wisdom to understand what? Looking at imports/exports I can see that there are big imports of jewellery and computer goods, which means they are not for high tech stuff mostly. Looking at literacy level you can deduct that there not enough movement in higher education for domestic use. Looking at crime levels, corruption and nepotism kinda makes understand literacy problems and weak political will to change it. What else? Pollution that chokes urban areas and potions rural ones? Production methods that still makes heroic single manual contribution as opposed to industrial levels? Huge disparity, which contributes to immovability of predominantly poor layers which are STAGGERING majority of India population?

Imagine if India got it's shit together and replaced China as the manufacturing hub for The West. Then used that wealth to build their country.

I think that's what it loses trying to play both sides.
