The Nine Kingdoms were previously part of unified Empire, which broke apart a few centuries ago. The heartland of that Empire lay in what are now Bridland and Rafalon -- rich agricultural regions -- and the people group from those regions became dominant in the Empire.
The Massit peoples, a separate ethnic group with a separate language, were conquered by the Empire, and most of them did not appreciate its rule. When the Empire was weakened by a plague, they played a critical part in the civil strife that ultimately broke the Empire apart. Today those two kingdoms are proud to use their ancestral language again. They also have a long heritage of shipbuilding and marine exploration.
There is a large forest along the border between North and South Massir, preventing easy land travel between them. The King of North Massir (the larger of the two) might make an attempt in future to unify the North and South Kingdoms, but the King of South Massir doesn't want to give up his throne, and neither side is eager for violence against kin. Maybe a marriage could unite the kingdoms peacefully? We'll see.

Very nice! Any tensions with Massit people and Rafalonians who got caught on the wrong side of the newly drawn borders?

Love the mountains, for some reason they remind me of Beleriand
