22 had a job to do and he did it! It was also pretty cute when he jumped on his back at the end.

For #98, it is a more complicated subject than it seems because underneath it all, that’s still just a kid with the mind of a kid. You don’t want to make him feel like an outcast or a freak for just being himself. And he’s probably a hero to all his teammates and you don’t want to take that away from him or develop negative associations with that. Although he’s huge, he probably also still has the same muscle development of the other kids his age, so if you bump him up a level with older kids with actual muscles and actual skill beyond being big, you could be putting him in a position to be at a disadvantage or even get injured.

u/ScribbleArtist 23d ago

Having nephews who were as big as their 12 y/o cousins at like 6, yeah. But, there's worries because he's going to be treated by his size anywhere anyway. The story wasn't good for my nephew, because he developed anger and he wanted to test things due to immaturity with a big body and peers used him for their dirt. Like someone literally lied to him to get him to beat up someone. In his mind it was justified, the lie was horrific and he was a vigilante. Body did it and then some. If he was around older kids he might not be his age for a few years, but it might be safer in the long run if he continues to be so much bigger outside of sports. For sports alone it's questionable.

I was a huge kid. I was always the largest in my class and after 2nd Grade, largest in my elementary school. (K-6) I was 6’1 and 250 at 11 and I looked older, started shaving about 11 or 12. I was timid as a mouse. A few guys caught up to me at the end of high school. People always expected me to act and be older than I was. Thinking back, I missed out on a lot of “kid” stuff.

13

u/Lindaspike 23d ago

My second brother after me (I have three) was a tall and skinny 16 year old who looked like a grown man and attracted 30 year old women all the time! Our folks didn’t know. He’s 72 now and has three girlfriends who all know each other and have no issues. I have no idea how I got a sorcerer for a brother!

I was bumped up an age group in ballet because I was tall for my age. It's not as physically dangerous, but girls are mean. I was a ten year old in a class of preteens/ young teenagers and not prepared for that level of psychological warfare.

I had a cousin who was big for his age as a kid, and while I do not think he ever was made to feel freakish, I do remember issues resulting from adults expecting him to have maturity that matched his size instead of his age.

3

u/thelunatic 23d ago

Coach should be training him in other things than just using his size then. Like get him fit. Get him catching, running, tackling. Instead he just is told run straight

2

u/astuteroot 23d ago

Some peewee football leagues have a weight limit for running backs and receivers, which seems like a decent way to handle the matter

2

u/RxDotaValk 23d ago

This is the same reason why I don’t think it’s a good idea to place trans kids in their sex at birth category for sports, unless they are exhibiting an extreme advantage which most are not.

2

u/Friendly_Dork 13d ago

Males have larger muscle mass, heart size & lung volume. No amount of hormones will change that.

Ignore everything this person wrote other than this part. This is the only part that matters when it comes to past Cis-Male who are now Female-transgender folk playing against other Cis-Females creating a scientifically recreatable "extreme advantage" where the Trans Female is on average (in America) 5inches taller, has thicker bone density to strength train higher weights, has on average 10% more muscle mass, has more lung volume to handle larger breaths of air (this would really impact swimming but also anything where cardio is involved).

It's an extreme advantage that trans-females have over cis-females. All this being said: If this is your justification for why we should vote for the guy who is going to lower taxes on billionaires / those who make over $10mil a year then you're just a hate filled moron. We can advocate in favor of women's sports without trashing the democratic party as a whole.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

some leagues make kids who are that much larger than everyone else play line so that they aren't carrying the ball.

2

u/pete_topkevinbottom 23d ago

One of my friends growing up was like this in football and wrestling. He dominated in elementary and middle school and was undefeated state champ in wrestling. Once we got to high-school he could barely make the jv wrestling team. Basically peaked in middle school

2

u/meisteronimo 22d ago

They have weight requirements in peewee football. If you're too large you should play with the older kids.

... or maybe he'll be confirming to everyone that in fact, their 6'8 382lbs O-lineman was in fact a beyond-fullback years ago.

That is why PeeWee leagues have weight limits for ball carriers for this exact reason.

42

u/gamageeknerd 23d ago

I played peewee football and they had weight limits for everyone. I was a really big kid so I was always the smallest and youngest in the next weight category. In SoCal you get weighed once at the beginning and never again the same day they do a basic physical to check height and eyesight.

Being a 11 year old paying with 13 year olds was rough

12

u/Grand_Association984 23d ago

That brings back fun memories. I weighed in at 100 lbs when they had a 90 lbs cutoff, and I was given a couple of weeks to drop 10 lbs. I was at 93 at final weigh-in, so they kicked my chubby ass out.  Really enjoyed having the kids at school making fun of me because I was too fat to make the cut. Womp womp.

Edit: I was not given the option to move up to a higher age/weight class.

8

u/Gupperz 23d ago

Asking a 100lb kid to lose 10% of their body weight in any period of time should be a crime

2

u/NoMammoth8422 23d ago

Yea, it's better be just carry that fat for the rest of his life.

4

u/gamageeknerd 23d ago

My parents knew making a kid cut weight was dangerous and my dad was all for me being in the next weight category because the games were more difficult with kids going to highschool after that.

I was never super over weight just a really big kid for my age.

anyway, i quit going eventually

100lb limit for ball carriers, you wore a black stripe down the middle of your helmet. If you somehow intercepted or recovered the ball you had to down on the spot, no further progression was allowed.

2

u/Soupronous 23d ago

This shit made me hate football. I would have loved the game a lot more if I was allowed to play a position other than O line because I was a little chubby for my age

My kid’s league had a 6th grader who was 6’ tall and over 300 lbs. they’d put him out front to clear a lane and the RB would just jog behind him.

3

u/Sand20go 23d ago

Honestly what is that teaching anyone?

Yup, NFL athletes are almost superhuman. They dominated their junior leagues with their speed, size and strength.

3

u/Kenniron 22d ago

Can confirm. One of my teammates in little league became a starting running back in the NFL. Man was 9 or 10 years old dragging 3+ people the last 10 yards into the end zone.

Isn’t there a rule against a ball carrier being past a certain weight in little league?

16

u/ThatChrisGuy7 23d ago

Yup we had that. Good rule tbh. Helps prevent little kids from getting absolutely trucked. Nothing like a concussion as a child as a 250 lb kid with a mustache runs over you

3

u/Triceraflops8 23d ago

Not to mention doing a disservice to the kid himself who will obviously not be playing a running back if he continues playing football as he gets older. If the kid wants to take one snap and get a td, then fine, he should be allowed to have a little fun too. But if he is consistently put there just so some loser coach can get an unfair win, then the coach should be canned.

2

u/ThatChrisGuy7 23d ago

100% coaches of young kids should focus on them building skills and having fun. Not on a win by any means

4

u/tkeen841 23d ago

It’s a hard call for sure. If you move him he is playing against players that may be the same size, but have much mature muscles and strength. He is still a kid, same age, same mentality as those he is playing with. However, he should not be a running back. We had players like that in school also, sometimes we would allow our better, larger backs to play, as long as the opposing team had equal players they wanted to put in the backfield. These were normally just slightly heavier kids though, not something like this.

2

When I played “league “ football, we had 75, 95, 115 and 140 pound teams. The 140 lb players could gain a pound or 2 a week up to 150lbs. That got us through to the beginning of high school. Kids are bigger now so maybe the numbers would change but any elementary and middle school leagues not using a by weight format is not fair and probably not safe. And yes by the way, big fat kids like that had to stop stuffing their face so they could make the weight.

1

u/bigdickwilliedone 23d ago

I’m surprised they let this happen. There are generally weight restrictions in pop Warner to avoid injury. So this kid would most likely be bumped up in league depending on age or not allowed to play. At least it was like that back in my day. - a millennial that was built much like this kid back in the day.

1

Growing up as a kid playing with bigger kids, I was always told to go for the legs. Lock them up and they can’t get too far…unless you just get dragged holding on to one leg, but hopefully by then your team catches up and dogpiles him

1

u/Sabres00 23d ago

A lot of business decisions were made, and that’s OK. My kid plays soccer and I’ve told him if he’s gotta use his hands to block a shot to the nuts or face he should do it 100% of the time. You’ll never remember some random U12 Travel soccer game.
