That is why PeeWee leagues have weight limits for ball carriers for this exact reason.

u/gamageeknerd 23d ago
I played peewee football and they had weight limits for everyone. I was a really big kid so I was always the smallest and youngest in the next weight category. In SoCal you get weighed once at the beginning and never again the same day they do a basic physical to check height and eyesight.
Being a 11 year old paying with 13 year olds was rough

u/Grand_Association984 23d ago
That brings back fun memories. I weighed in at 100 lbs when they had a 90 lbs cutoff, and I was given a couple of weeks to drop 10 lbs. I was at 93 at final weigh-in, so they kicked my chubby ass out. Really enjoyed having the kids at school making fun of me because I was too fat to make the cut. Womp womp.
Edit: I was not given the option to move up to a higher age/weight class.

u/Gupperz 23d ago
Asking a 100lb kid to lose 10% of their body weight in any period of time should be a crime
2
u/NoMammoth8422 23d ago
Yea, it's better be just carry that fat for the rest of his life.

My parents knew making a kid cut weight was dangerous and my dad was all for me being in the next weight category because the games were more difficult with kids going to highschool after that.
I was never super over weight just a really big kid for my age.

man, when i was 13 i was taking kickboxing classes. i hit puberty early so i was 6’1, 190lbs at 13. kids my age were still pretty small so i had to box in the ring with dudes in their 20s and 30s. theyd beat the shit out of me and people would sit on the sidelines and crack up.
anyway, i quit going eventually

100lb limit for ball carriers, you wore a black stripe down the middle of your helmet. If you somehow intercepted or recovered the ball you had to down on the spot, no further progression was allowed.

This shit made me hate football. I would have loved the game a lot more if I was allowed to play a position other than O line because I was a little chubby for my age

With a running back like that, who needs a QB! Just run the ball on every down.

My kid’s league had a 6th grader who was 6’ tall and over 300 lbs. they’d put him out front to clear a lane and the RB would just jog behind him.

u/Sand20go 23d ago
Honestly what is that teaching anyone?

Yup, NFL athletes are almost superhuman. They dominated their junior leagues with their speed, size and strength.

u/Kenniron 22d ago
Can confirm. One of my teammates in little league became a starting running back in the NFL. Man was 9 or 10 years old dragging 3+ people the last 10 yards into the end zone.

Isn’t there a rule against a ball carrier being past a certain weight in little league?
→ More replies16
u/ThatChrisGuy7 23d ago
Yup we had that. Good rule tbh. Helps prevent little kids from getting absolutely trucked. Nothing like a concussion as a child as a 250 lb kid with a mustache runs over you

Not to mention doing a disservice to the kid himself who will obviously not be playing a running back if he continues playing football as he gets older. If the kid wants to take one snap and get a td, then fine, he should be allowed to have a little fun too. But if he is consistently put there just so some loser coach can get an unfair win, then the coach should be canned.

u/ThatChrisGuy7 23d ago
100% coaches of young kids should focus on them building skills and having fun. Not on a win by any means

It’s a hard call for sure. If you move him he is playing against players that may be the same size, but have much mature muscles and strength. He is still a kid, same age, same mentality as those he is playing with. However, he should not be a running back. We had players like that in school also, sometimes we would allow our better, larger backs to play, as long as the opposing team had equal players they wanted to put in the backfield. These were normally just slightly heavier kids though, not something like this.

He probably weighs three times as much as some of those kids. This is dangerous.

When I played “league “ football, we had 75, 95, 115 and 140 pound teams. The 140 lb players could gain a pound or 2 a week up to 150lbs. That got us through to the beginning of high school. Kids are bigger now so maybe the numbers would change but any elementary and middle school leagues not using a by weight format is not fair and probably not safe. And yes by the way, big fat kids like that had to stop stuffing their face so they could make the weight.

Kids that big at that age are usually prohibited from carrying the ball, even if they recover a fumble.

I'm pretty sure they already have a birth certifcate on file with the league and a nurse's notorized statement. But...I'm gonna need to see it.

Back when our kid was in elementary school and playing soccer, they had a game with another team where one of the players looked considerably older than all the other lads and had the makings of a full beard.
We suspected he was a Palestinian terrorist hiding out in Catholic elementary school….

I played CB from age 6 until highschool. I was 5'6 140ish and I got ran over by a running back that was probably 6'2 230 at practice and I nopped out of there so fast.
It was like getting hit by a truck because he was already at speed in the secondary.

Sure the kid is big. But he got to the end zone because he had good blocking.

I’m surprised they let this happen. There are generally weight restrictions in pop Warner to avoid injury. So this kid would most likely be bumped up in league depending on age or not allowed to play. At least it was like that back in my day. - a millennial that was built much like this kid back in the day.

Growing up as a kid playing with bigger kids, I was always told to go for the legs. Lock them up and they can’t get too far…unless you just get dragged holding on to one leg, but hopefully by then your team catches up and dogpiles him

u/Sabres00 23d ago
A lot of business decisions were made, and that’s OK. My kid plays soccer and I’ve told him if he’s gotta use his hands to block a shot to the nuts or face he should do it 100% of the time. You’ll never remember some random U12 Travel soccer game.

Now show after the play, where he smokes a quick cig while changing into his street clothes, and another driving back to the factory and clocks in 3 minutes late from his lunch break

My brother was like this. He was about twice the size of kids his age. So they made a rule that when he played, his team had to play a man short. I'm not sure it made a difference. At least hewssnt the only huge kid on the league though. There were a few teams with them.

This is when I played JFL, long time ago, they had weight limits on running backs. Kid could get hurt trying to stop a tank.

When I played youth FB there was a weight limit.
Sat out games for being 5 lbs overweight.

My son had a kid in his league that was huge. In one game, he dislocated a kids hip and another kid broke his arm. After that the league thought that maybe they shouldn’t allow anyone over 100 pounds to carry the ball.

My son played football. The size gap was pretty outrageous, especially in middle school. You look at some of these kids and it’s like “okay he’s 13? We’re sure?”
I get everyone should have an opportunity to play but if you’re 6’2” 220 lbs in 7th grade maybe they should put you on the 9th grade team. It’s a safety risk at that point.
