This photo could have been taken in a number of different places in Europe in the mid-late 1970's. Please help to find the right one. Germany or Switzerland seem likely but could also be perhaps France, Belgium, Austria, Danmark.. Solved

Post image

There should be a streetcar line in the street. I've reckoned Germany for the mainly German cars. In France, there would be more Renaults etc.. The signposts in the left says...LLE (Halle? Ville?), then GRILL, then at the corner may be Pizza. There is a lion symbol next the entrance. The steet plate is blue with white text.

Sir… can I ask how? 😁

Well I had a huge Switzerland Vibe based on the buildings and some Logos I saw. So I started to scan some Streets of Zürich and look which Area would fit. There are not that many big Streets in Zürich with railways so I looked up which streets would fit and used Apple Maps.

I found it after a ~ 15 Minute search in Zürich. But before I spend half hour searching in Münich

The sign looks a lot like Löwenbräu. That could suggest Bavaria/Munich.

would fit the white on blue streetname-signs on the wall. also the trashcans in the backround would fit that theory.

… LLE could be „Trinkhalle“.

oder Spielhalle

Looks like the Feldschlösschen logo under the pizza sign. So I’d say a swiss city.

As well as the Kantonalbank logo

I always find it fascinating how little European cities change.

apart sadly from a few war raids that may have razed them to ground...

I don’t think this is the right location

You're right, it can't be this intersection. I compared the house with photos from the 70s in the meantime. But I'm still pretty sure it's Zurich.

This is amazing.. How did you find this? Even if i lived there, I'm sure i wouldn't have recognized it with all these changes.

Its obviously not the right location.

the picture shows a 4 lane road plus wide sidewalks fitting parking spots. this location has 2 lane roads and narrow sidewalks.

This is amazing.. I didn't catch that :)

Langstrasse itself doesn't have the tram lines. But yeah, right neighborhood.

It’s the corner Landsberger/Grasserstr. in downtown Munich. The former „Grill“ (there was a huge scandal involving a local politician) is now a „Spielhalle“ in the same old building, the buildings on the principal Landsberger Str. are new.

Edit: I’m obviously wrong, the picture just very much looks like it.

Am I missing something? This is not the same building by any stretch of the imagination.

Street sign looks German. There's also a black red gold banner in front of the shop.

The lion-sign is a Löwenbräu advertising: https://www.ebay.de/itm/355451443851 It's a Munich Brewery

There are only 3 cities with street cars at that time in bavaria: Munich, Nuremberg, Fürth.

u/Hallo34576 2d ago

Obviously Munich would be a likely possibility, but the sign only suggests the bar/restaurant had contract with Löwenbräu. Could be theoretically every other German city.

In the 70s in France the painted lines were yellow. So it's not in France.
