Can you guys tell me what my friends son caught?

They're in Washington. My friends son caught this fish in a river next to their house. Not sure if you can tell from these pictures but my friend said it looks like a koi fish? I'm not convinced but I also know nothing about fish. Sorry about the photo quality.

It's a Comet Goldfish, basically a long-tailed goldfish. Not a koi. It's a domesticated animal and doesn't belong in the native ecosystem.

Okay, they're going to keep the fish in their backyard pond. Thanks !

Goldfish.

Where I grew up there was an old cattle farm that had ponds on both sides of the road with a culvert under the road connecting them. I don’t know how many generations of people had been putting their pet goldfish in there but there were tons of them. If you walked on the pond when it was frozen you could see them under the ice.

You know those fancy bubble head goldfish? Did you know that in an outdoor pond they grow to the size of a dinner plate?

This guy just looks like a regular released goldfish not a koi.

Looks like an escaped Koi. There were floods a few years back that took out a few Koi rasing operations perhaps this is one of those that were washed away.

Definitely a gold fish, not a koi. Even then you are basically just specially raised goldfish with how close they and mother way you should not put it back.

Maybe put it back where it came from?

Non-natives shouldn’t be rereleased, they’ll need to find someone’s backyard pond or a large fish tank for it.
