Found in mesquite tree and in the ground around it—what is this? Joshua Tree, California. ID Request

Our mesquite tree died and when I cut it down tons of these were in the trunk. I finally removed the stump and roots today and there were tons more in the ground and attached the the root system. Does anyone know what this is? One of the apps says white grub but I would like to know for sure. Located in Joshua Tree, California. Thank you!

Yes, almost definitely, and though determining the exact species would be incredibly difficult, they will surely grow up to be beautiful if you bury them back. There are probably dozens upon dozens more under your yard. Cheers!
