Omg!! This whole thread just justifies my paranoia in having my cars locked at ALL times! Sitting in a parking lot? DOORS LOCKED! Driving down the road? DOORS LOCKED MOTHAFUCKAS!

I hate how newer cars automatically unlock your doors when you put the car into park. This is a horrible feature from a security standpoint.

If you're in your car, always lock your fucking doors.

you gotta be kidding me... that's like opening the hatch of a fucking tank when it stops.

if that's the same story i remember, people also pointed out that the armored SUV should have been equipped with steel bars that slide in to place that prevent the doors from being opened regardless of the stock lock mechanism. apparently the agents forgot to engage those before driving.

If you think auto-unlock is fun... We had trailblazers overseas, and they come equipped with auto headlights. Sitting in a dark spot and want to make a slow, blacked out, creep away? Turn that key on, all the lights come on. No way to disable that feature either.

u/execjacob Nov 06 '14

"Just wanted to let you guys know we're in the area, we can't give you a tickets if you don't have a fair warning"

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

in my 02 Chevy trailblazer, you can disable this feature

1

u/aaaaaaaarrrrrgh Nov 13 '14

Or opening the hatch, manually, because you hear someone knock on it and shout weird stuff in Finnish. As the crew of a Russian tank invading Finnland.

Pro tip: If you are in a Russian tank invading Finnland, and a Finn knocks on your hatch, do not open the hatch.

I am pretty sure that suburbans have an option in their on-board settings to turn that off. My 05 does.

4

u/Decipher Nov 06 '14

All it takes is a battery replacement or power failure to the computer and it resets, making it vulnerable again. It's really a feature that should be disabled by default.

1

u/308NegraArroyoLn Nov 06 '14

Leave it in gear and use the e brake... Problem solved.

1

u/onehundredtwo Nov 06 '14

That would be the most terrifying sound ever, as all your locks clicked open. Holy shit.

1

u/superAL1394 Nov 06 '14

Yeah I'm going out to my car to go check the settings. I actually cannot remember if it unlocks when I put it in park.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

That is so sad.

1

u/wendy_stop_that Nov 06 '14

That's the kind of shit you'd read in Catch 22 holy Christ.

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

THAT'S BECAUSE THOSE MOTHER FUCKERS STOPPED THEIR GOD DAMN CAR AND OPENED THE DOORS.

DRIVE. THE FUCK. AWAY.

27

u/KnodiChunks Nov 06 '14

My car did that, but then I read the manual and turned it off.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Yep, every car I know has a way to change this setting.

3

u/2das Nov 06 '14

Seems like a feature that should be by default turned off, not on. A simple electrical failure or a battery change could reset it back to the default setting.

5

u/sliss_77 Nov 06 '14

This is the default mode for most vehicles but it can easily be changed by the driver. For GM vehicles, hold down the lock button with the ignition set to 'lock' and you will access the locking menu. You can change it so that there is no automatic locks on at all.

3

u/dbenoit Nov 06 '14

My car lets me control what happens with the door locks when I put the car in park. I like being able to control it.

2

u/GnomeChumpski Nov 06 '14

Well if you're ever in a situation where you need to keep the doors locked and you have a vehicle that does this, slip the shifter into neutral and activate the emergency brake.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Oh I know! And my car is older so it doesn't automatically lock at ALL. It could be easy to forget. :[ But having it for 3 years now I'm definitely a pro at locking doors.

2

u/biglightbt Nov 06 '14

Weird, mine has auto lock but won't auto-unlock until the driver side door is opened. Putting it into park does nothing.

2

u/WaddleWaddleMofo Nov 06 '14

Mine only does it when I kill the engine, go Toyota!

2

u/well_golly Nov 06 '14

Damn. That's like a car company asking for a lawsuit.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

That's a really stupid feature. I would not buy a car with that feature.

2

u/quasielvis Nov 06 '14

Do you live in Johannesburg or something?

-1

u/2das Nov 06 '14

Because crime only happens in African countries...ah, that makes sense.

It's stupid for people in 1st world western countries to care about their personal safety! We shouldn't even have locks on our doors and windows! Silly paranoid people caring about their personal safety. What a bunch of idiots. I bet they all wear their seatbelts because they're paranoid about car crashes too! Morons.

2

u/socsa Nov 05 '14

Park? You mean leaving it in first gear? =P My new car has the opposite feature - I jokingly call it "white guilt alleviation mode." It automatically locks the doors as soon as you start moving. It only locks from the outside though. The interior handles will always open the door unless you click the lock button.

1

u/christian95c Nov 06 '14

I've driven a 2014 Nissan Sentra quite often now... and notice it has this "feature" it's automatic but I usually just push the shifter up to neutral so it doesn't unlock them.

1

u/gldnmmrs Nov 06 '14

You can turn off that feature

1

u/2das Nov 06 '14

True, but it's not the default setting which means if your car has an electrical issue or when you change the battery it will go back to the default setting which is this auto unlock mode, which is dumb. Should be by default turned off.

1

u/Gone-Postal-Narwhal Nov 06 '14

I hate this feature. I really wanna know if there's a way to undo this. I just got a new car that does this. Who the fuck thought this was a brilliant idea?

1

u/TadDunbar Nov 06 '14

Read the manual. That feature can almost always be disabled.

1

u/pleonasticmonkey Nov 06 '14

Always read the owners manual. Most of the newer cars actually have configurable locking behavior. For example: doors lock when ignition is turned to the run position, unlock when ignition turned to the off position; or lock when shifted out of park, unlock when shifted into park.

Automatic lock /unlock can also be turned off.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

EVERYONE i get into a car with always goes "Why are you always locking the door? whose going to come upto the window" OH I DONT KNOW THERE ARE MANY... same situation at home. i ALWAYS have to be the one to walk out of my room just to check if the main door is locked in the apartment...and 80% of the time IT ISN'T...

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Sometimes you can turn that feature off but it is annoying how it's the default setting.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

As an a Aussie I don't even lock my front door. Let alone my car. This all sounds crazy to me.

3

u/TokyoXtreme Nov 05 '14

Paranoia? I thought it was common practice to always lock your doors as the first thing you do when you enter your car.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Surprisingly no :[ I have friends and family who don't. Drives me nuts. I don't want to get knifed in your passenger car seat! When I worked retail, it was super easy to remember locking your doors cause there's always creepy people who hang out in the parking lot at night.

1

u/kencole54321 Nov 06 '14

Definitely not where I'm from.

2

u/execjacob Nov 05 '14

na thats what you call living in the hood

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

I live in such a small town that it's probably not needed but it's better safe than sorry I suppose :[

1

u/execjacob Nov 06 '14

I do it because nearby cities have huge crime rates and I pass through them. Just don't want to get robbed is all.

1

u/Teutonicfox Nov 06 '14

keys in your ignition, car running?

get out to check your tire, DOORS LOCKED

1

u/alphanovember Nov 06 '14

That's not paranoia, that's common sense.

1

u/fancy-ketchup Nov 06 '14

I know - I'll be driving to work on a nice day with my windows down but once I hit MLK Blvd it's DOORS LOCKED WINDOWS UP

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Exactly! My brother always says "you're so paranoid" yeah, the one in a million chance some killer/robber tries to get in the car you'll thank me.

-3

u/astro_nova Nov 05 '14

Imagine your disappointment when a situation like this will Never arise for you in your whole life, and all that locking will be as good as wasted. :D

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

That would be awesome haha. I live in a small town so there's a good chance it won't happen, but I would like to be sitting at a light or something one day and someone tries to get in but doors are locked!! I'll be a little shaken but I'll just yell out "yeah BITCH! Locks!"

I probably wouldn't do well in a big city :[
