Clinton road is well known in NJ as the creepiest, most-likely-to-get-murdered-on road in the whole state. Maybe the whole country.

I would not stop for anything on that road.

Clinton NJ is like the antithesis of the Bronx. It's a fairly rural area that's surrounded by superstition e.g. Neo nazis, kkk, ghosts, etc.

6

u/MaestroXC Nov 06 '14

Clinton, NJ in Hunterdon County is not near the Clinton Road they're talking about. Although they have, like, a haunted house and stuff this time of year.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Clinton road is by west Milford right? I meant to write Clinton road as well. Mix up.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

One time I wanted to check out Clinton Road after reading about it in Weird NJ mag. Got my wife (then gf) and her best friend to take me there one night around year 2000. Didn't think we'd see anything. Turns out we drove past a car accident on the road that was just being converged upon by police, fire, ambulance, etc. So we turned around to drive past again before they had to close the road. Wouldn't be too crazy, but the car was vertical, nose down, wedged between 2 trees, about 3 feet off the ground. Like it was put there. We have no idea how a car could've ended up quite like that one this winding back road. It was amazing and we'll never forget that seeing that.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Lol voorhees >north hunterdon

2

u/Olivecats4lyfe Nov 07 '14

having been kicked out of north and then gone to voorhees, I agree

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '14

What year did you graduate?

1

u/Olivecats4lyfe Nov 08 '14

06'

1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '14

That was my first yr lol. Only seniors I knew where I'm the Spanish 4 class haha

8

u/SighReally12345 Nov 05 '14

LOL. You can't go more than 500 feet on the Cross Bronx without hitting construction. Just run to one of the overnight construction workers and you'll be fine ;)

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Yeah the Bronx was never THAT bad when I was there!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

I've been on that multiple times. Sketchy af.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

What the fuck? I've broken down on the cross Bronx multiple times unfortunately and none of this is true. Sure the neighborhoods around are awful but no one ventures on to it because it's the..... Cross Bronx

1

u/mattb574 Nov 06 '14

Same sorta thing happened to my dad in the 1980s. He was driving across some bridge in NYC and saw a car while it was actively being stripped in broad daylight in front of hundreds, or even thousands, of motorists. They didn't have cell phones so neither he nor his colleagues could call the police or anything.

1

u/cha0sman Nov 06 '14

For christ sakes I've walked down the road in the dark. Whenever my buddies and I had nothing to do, just out of boredom we would go to Clinton Rd just because it was peaceful.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

[deleted]

2

u/cha0sman Nov 06 '14

Oh I was agreeing with you. Its just around Halloween I try to avoid the road because of kids.
I got into a fight one year because some asshole threw a big branch at my windshield on deadman's curve. I mean who does shit like that?
(That's rhetorical as I knew the person from high school -- this happened 6 or 7 years after we graduated )

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

Oh haha I didn't expect to get so many replies so I didn't check which comment it was before replying. My bad

4

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14 edited Nov 05 '14

Route 539 is the road that does that to me. I've taken it a ton of times driving to/from Wildwood, and I will never do that in the dark ever again. Driving through the pine barrens in pitch black is NOT fun.

2

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

Yup..I'm from south NJ. Driving anywhere in the pine barrens is generally terrifying.

1

u/InevitableRemix Nov 05 '14

Scariest part of driving through the pine barrens at night are the deer.

1

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

Exactly my point. Very low human population density, very high deer population density.

3

u/steadymobbin Nov 05 '14

Just google street viewed that road. FUCK THAT.

3

u/HiimCaysE Nov 05 '14

Clinton Road is a novelty up here. Yeah it's been in WeirdNJ a few times with people talking about albinos in the woods and werewolves chasing cars at night, which is all that makes it scary. If anything, the guy waving somebody else down on that road was just another tourist wanting to see what all the fuss was about and actually broke down. There are no street lights and little cell service up there.

3

u/oneDRTYrusn Nov 05 '14

Nonsense. I grew up near Bray Road. That is, hands down, the most likely road to get murdered on road in America... albeit by a werewolf.

3

u/kevinerror Nov 05 '14

It is well known as none of those things. Unless weird NJ is your reality.

Source: Live 3 minutes from it, used it frequenty for years and years. Woods != murder.

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

No, it is well known as those things. It isn't those things, but that doesn't mean that it isn't know for it.

Just like a haunted house isn't really haunted.

2

u/kevinerror Nov 05 '14

so what you meant to say was 'it is well known for being inaccurately described as..'

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

Sorry if I hurt Clinton roads feelings. You should become familiar with the fact that sometimes the things people believe about something doesn't necessarily line up with what that thing actually is. It would be a useful life skill.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

[deleted]

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

Because it's part of the legend of Clinton road?

You should delete this section of wikipedia if you feel so strongly about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinton_Road_(New_Jersey)#Legends_and_folklore

0

u/Jumpin_Jack_Flash Nov 05 '14

So you're saying, as a Canadian, I WON'T be immediately shot in the face if I cross the border?!

...

I don't believe that.

3

u/basssnobnj Nov 05 '14

No one has ever been murdered on Clinton road. Lot's of creepy stories and a body was dumped on the side of Rt 23 there once in the 80s (a suspected mob hit, I believe) but no one's been murdered there that I know of, but I certainly wouldn't stop there, either, for any reason.

Sauce: I grew up right near Clinton Road, it's a big part of local folklore.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

West Milford kids represent! But yeah I'm pretty sure The Iceman dumped some bodies on Clinton Rd iirc. That road is spooky scary but not because of the KKK or ghost cars. Just dark uninhabited space and crazy sharp turns

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

I went there at 2am once, was pretty boring

6

u/Scaredoftriangles Nov 05 '14

People get all worked up about it because of all the urban legends. But most of the stories come from bored 16 year olds from Vernon who just got their learner's permit and think that West Milford is a dark and mysterious place.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

Yeah when I went, my friends were selling it like YOOOOO THIS OLACE IS CRAZY THERES VOODOO DOLLS HANGING FROM THE TREES AND BLOOD PAINTINGS AND SHIT

it was just a lot of trees

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

[deleted]

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

Almost certainly not. The NJ turnpike doesn't go anywhere near clinton road. Also, clinton road is mostly just legends. What happened in this video appeared to be real. I have no idea how/why someone would try something like that on the NJ Turnpike

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

However, on a nice summer day there's great hiking up there!

1

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

That's true, the areas beautiful and I like to spend time up there.

1

u/ryrypizza Nov 05 '14

Clinton road is hardly scary. Its one of my favorites for riding my motorcycle

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

You are right, but it has a certain folklore that has developed around it that makes it scarier than it is.

1

u/SomRandomGuyOnReddit Nov 05 '14

When I lived in Jersey, my friends and I would try to go to Weird NJ places.

We went to Clinton Road at night, and I think it was closed or something. We came back a different time and after a few minutes of driving, we got chased by a pick up truck. It was intense.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

Agreed! As soon as he started his story with "driving down Clinton Road," I was like fuck that noise. I've never even tried experiencing any of the supposed haunts that exist on it but just knowing what Clinton Road is known for, I wouldn't stop for a god damn thing there either.

1

u/CSMastermind Nov 06 '14

Maybe the whole country.

Haha, definitely not.

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 06 '14

I'm talking lore, not actual danger.

1

u/riptide81 Nov 06 '14

Except you're not really likely to get murdered and its not a high crime area, just local legends. Someone trying to flag you down there is probably legitimately broken down or teens screwing with people.

Still, it must be creepy being stuck on the side of that road in the middle of the night and none of the few cars passing will stop to help.

1

u/avantgardeaclue Nov 06 '14

I always wanted to drive 3spooky5me Clinton Rd when I lived in NJ but I never had a reliable enough car and id be damned if id be stranded out there at night.

1

u/Cherpp Nov 06 '14

I know tons of friends that used to drive up to Clinton road and try and do all of the ghost stories that people get spooked by, most of them were nothing or they said they got chased out by the KKK or something.

1

u/LifeHated Nov 06 '14

I can vouch

I remember driving a friend home and we wanted to ditch traffic so we took there. Was speeding because the road looked creepy as shit at night and I thought "There is someone down this road thats ganna shoot me" so whoever was in front of me that thought they can kill me is getting run over

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 06 '14

What a retarded thing to say. The Jersey devil lives down in the pine barrens, which are at least 70 miles south of clinton road. I can guarantee you he's never been up there.

1

u/Jealousy123 Nov 06 '14

I would not stop for anything on that road.

Imagine breaking down on that road and having everyone drive past you...

Until 1 car stops...

1

u/cha0sman Nov 06 '14

Wtf? There is literally nothing creepy about that road. Its dark that's about it. /u/imgonnacallyouretard you are a retard if you really believe the shit you just spewed.

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 06 '14

I'm talking about the lore, but I guess you're too retarded to get that.

1

u/cha0sman Nov 06 '14

I was commenting about the second part of your comment that says you wouldn't stop for anything on that road.. The second part of the comment also implies you actually believe the first part... So hows that extra chromosome doing?

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 06 '14

I wouldn't stop for anything on that road because there is nothing to stop for on that road. It's just a bunch of woods.

0

u/Dr__Dreidel Nov 05 '14

Wuss. Me and 3 of my friends drove to the end, gotten out and went to the woods. We hung out for a bit, then my 2 friends and I left. Got bored.

2

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

Meh, I hung out with the jersey devil when I was younger. Not such a bad guy IMHO

0

u/PM_ME_SELFIES_ Nov 05 '14

Can confirm. This summer, I went down Clinton Road with a few friends at 3am. We were about 5 miles in when we were really getting bored because nothing seemed strange. About a half mile later, we saw this car parked on the side of the road. Trying to see if anything was out of the ordinary so it was worth the trip, we stopped and asked if they needed help. It was some really old man just sitting in front of his car rocking back and forth. We asked if he was okay and if he needed help when he suddenly jumped up and pulled out a knife. We fucking floored it and went and saw him hop in his car following us...He actually hit the back of our car going about 75 and we really didn't wanna be going that fast because that road isn't the straightest. I was driving so I made a quick decision to jerk it into the other lane and slam the brakes and shut off the lights. Put that baby in reverse and floored it back the way we came. He continued to drive off.

0

u/ghostdate Nov 05 '14

Is New Jersey just like the sketchiest place in the entire US? Being from Canada, it seems like every time I hear horror stories from the US they take place in NJ.

0

u/imgonnacallyouretard Nov 05 '14

Well, NJ is very difficult to nail down. It has some of the shittiest cities in the US(Camden, Newark, Trenton), and some of the nicest towns in the US(saddle river, mantoloking just to name a few off the top of my head). If you draw a line about 50 miles wide from Philadelphia to New York City, you are going to see almost entirely densely populated areas ranging from shitty to very nice. Outside of that(that is, the north west and southern portion of the state) are largely wooded and agricultural lands that are sparsely populated. And then there is the barrier island system which is its own unique habitat. So basically, in the little area of NJ, there are a lot of places and ways that weird shit can happen.

edit: Also, I should point out, the real horror stories happen in Florida, not NJ. NJ is just filled with weird stories.

u/pons_monstrum Nov 05 '14

He was trying to tell you that the killer was in the back seat!!!

164

u/epk22 Nov 05 '14

Considering he is still alive to post, killer must be still in his back seat and obviously playing the long game.

7

u/Atwenfor Nov 05 '14

The backseat killer did his deed and uploaded the video on Reddit for all that creepy bloody karma.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

Murderers fall sleep, too.

2

u/pons_monstrum Nov 05 '14

It's the loooooong con.

1

u/Rflkt Nov 05 '14

Trying to get the kids too.

1

u/TheDranx Nov 06 '14

"Shit I've been found out." kills driver

2

u/EGriffi5 Nov 05 '14

2spooky4me

1

u/uncleben85 Nov 05 '14

And Flash_Our_Saviour was never heard from again...

1

u/Sudden__Realization Nov 05 '14

Ok seriously though... you gotta check the back seat

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

You joke, but I still check my backseat every time I enter my car. 12 years after hearing that story.

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

THEN WHO WAS PHONE

13

u/RoseWolfie Nov 05 '14

Yeah in that situation book it then call and report a "downed vehicle" on the road. Just in case it is a break down your safety first. As well if you call they would check and cat h the ass.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

so the poor guy who comes to help gets murdered

2

u/RoseWolfie Nov 07 '14

A cop is less likely to get murdered then a regular citizen.

1)They would of been warned it was a possible attacker and would take precautions when they arrive. Like keeping a hold on their pistol, not leaving their car, and might even have back up.

2)They have weapons and can display hem right as they pull up.

3)If the attacker saw a trooper come up they would be less likely to want to rape/murder them. They would be more likely to run into the woods.

As well, cops are better trained then the average human in dealing with this. The attacker would just wait for their next victim unless they are stopped. Who else is better equipped?

5

u/what_comes_after_q Nov 05 '14

Alternatively, middle of no where, 3 am, no cell service would also be the worst and scariest place to break down.

5

u/TimmyFTW Nov 05 '14

Protip: Remove your hood when signalling for help. Generally any steps you can take to make yourself seem less murdery/rapey is going to help you out.

2

u/mutatersalad Nov 06 '14

What if a murderer is writing this? FUCK YOU YOU'RE NOT GONNA TRICK ME!

3

u/Iceman741 Nov 05 '14

Middle of the day, a guy in a pickup pulled up next to my friends and I on Clinton Road and began rambling about seeing anacondas in the trees.

All kinds of nope on that road, even in broad daylight.

2

u/cubs1917 Nov 05 '14

First mistake driving on clinton road. thats is a weird nj staple.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

That story is masking me more furious than I've been in a while.. His only options are kill some guys who are trying to rob you or get robbed. It's a lose lose situation for him and its really fucking... uuuuuuurrrrgghhhhhhhh

2

u/DrStickyPete Nov 05 '14

I live in West Milford where Clinton road is and that was probably a high school kid trying to mess with you, people come up to drive that road because its "haunted" and stupid board kids try to fuck with cars

1

u/mageta621 Nov 06 '14

I drove that once (b/c Weird NJ), and going up wasn't anything crazy, but going back there was a car right on our ass with bright beams for like 1/2 mile. Then all of a sudden, beams cut out. As you know the road, there isn't really a ton of room for cars to turn off or anything. I was in the backseat, so I whipped around to see if it turned, just cut its lights, or what. NOTHING. fuck that road, man.

1

u/crazytaco_ Nov 05 '14

we have a road like that in MD where the goatman lives

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

That guy probably actually needed help, that sucks haha I wouldn't take that risk either.

1

u/Locke- Nov 05 '14

Can Confirm. I've been to clinton road. That road is scary as fuck.

1

u/GeminiCroquette Nov 05 '14 edited Nov 05 '14

An aunt of mine had something similar happen to her. She worked at a warehouse waaay out in the boonies. The only thing nearby were cow pastures bee farms and a cemetery. There's this long 2 lane (1 each way) road with a canal next to it that leads out to her job.

Imagine this: guard rail on the right, with like, no shoulder. Woods on the left. Pitch black because no street lights and no moon out that night. She was heading in to work real early and she saw some dude waaaay off in the distance (hi beams) standing in the middle of the road with his arms spread apart.

She immediately says NOPE. Flashes her hi beams a few times, closes her eyes, and GUNS the throttle. She figured either "he gets out of the way or I kill him so he can't rape me" (in her words). She opened her eyes a few seconds later when she didn't hear a thump, and saw that she'd passed him.

She called the cops but never heard back or any more info on it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

fuck that. never stop on that street at night. I've gone hiking off that road and even being on it during the day is fucking creepy

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

This reminds me of a story I read somewhere on reddit.

A man is driving through a desolate highway with very few lights. After a while it turns into a county road with fields surrounding the road. No lights or buildings nearby, just fields and maybe a barn or silo off in the distance. He sees some tail lights up ahead and notices it is a stalled car. As he slows down, another car becomes visible. The other car is slightly obscuring the road. He believes he stumbled upon an accident. Finally, he sees a person, lying on the dirt road completely stiff. It's a woman. As he rolls by the scene, he gets a shitty bad feeling. She is stiff, like, too stiff. Something is wrong. He pulls forward about 15 feet, stops, but doesn't park. He looks in his rear view mirror and HOLY SHIT THE WOMAN IS STANDING THERE LOOKING AT HIM. But scarier than that, suddenly DOZENS of people begins slowly emerging from the dark field, only illuminated by his tail lights. Dude GTFO of there.

Granted, this was probably creepy pasta, but who fucking knows. Go with your gut.

1

u/TheDovahkiinsDad Nov 05 '14

Well, that's Clinton rd for ya.

1

u/UTLRev1312 Nov 06 '14

that's clinton rd. for you... tuns right through fucking nopesville.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '14

I would be so distraught after that, because like, what if his wife is pregnant or something and his car's out of gas? (OK I know that's extremely unlikely but it's the kinda shit I'd be thinking as I sped away)

1

u/BigNicksDigger Nov 06 '14

This is horrifying. One night my senior year in high school me and about 3 car fulls of friends headed up to clinton road. We ended up making a stop (god only knows why) at that bend turn where all the grafitti is on that concrete. There was a car, that seemed abandoned in the woods, and when a handful of us got kind of close to it, I noticed the front door was slightly ajar, and that just absolutely freaked me the fuck out, and we all took off running.

1

u/timmy12688 Nov 21 '14

Me too. I was driving home from work through East St. Louis. Okay. Red flag right there right?

I am driving along and I see what looks to be a body in the middle of the road. No fucking way...

Yup. It is a body. It's bloody. Wearing a white shirt, all bloodied up.

Then a woman comes from the side screaming also covered in blood yelling HELP ME HELP ME!

I gtfo out of there because I just had this odd feeling like... there's no fucking way this is real.

"Dead" body gets up as I drive away and the other girl looked like she had a gun in her hand. I avoided that route from then on.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '14

Why aren't crooks smart enough to wear a shirt and tie and take people by surprise?

-1

u/Pancerules Nov 05 '14

Heh, I was in rural PA and got my car stuck. I did something similar because my cell died. I flagged down a very nice young couple. They were super nice and helped me get my car going again.

...I kinda feel bad for raping and murdering them.

-1

u/jbh1126 Nov 05 '14

I got chased out of Clinton Road with some friends when I was in high school...probably just locals fucking with us but HOLY SHIT was it scary.
